I never considered John Gannon to be shit but merely a player of limited ability who gave his all , which I admire in any player .

My list of shit players is overwhelmingly made up of those who clearly had some ability but chose to go through the motions of being a footballer whilst stealing money from the club . None of them have turned out to be better with the benefit of hindsight .

I'm sure you can think of one or two of those .

Paul Ifill got pelters in the 06 promotion season. Rewatch the season review for the amount of crosses he dropped perfectly onto a blades head from the right wing.

Graham Stuart was a great player at championship level. He went to Charlton during the couple of years we seemed to be having a permanent fire sale. Barely gets mentioned.

Clive Mendonca springs to mind. Terrific in our reserves, hopeless in our first team, brilliant for Charlton.

I thought the same about Billy Sharp at one bit - but he's more than made up for it in this, his third coming.

(That's a good shout from CrookesBlade as well, Graham Stuart. Another one that looked far more impressive than what he looked for us).

How about Imre Varadi? He was a far better player for Wednesday than he ever was for us. And J P McGovern - another one who looked better for them than us. Mind you, it's easier to look good in a Wednesday team than in a United team, because the majority of their other players are crap.

Gannon was a popular whipping boy for a lot of fans. I never quite understood why. In a team that had very few good ball players, he could at least, hit a decent pass. He was a damn site better than Jim Gannon, that's for sure!

Yes I think that's fair. He was a young kid when he played for us.

How about DCL as well then? I thought he looked "o.k." for us, nothing more and I didn't lose any sleep when we sold him to Everton, I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. But the lad has done very well for them of late.

David Barnes. I think I must have seen him have a bad game or something because I just took a dislike to him but watching back footage of that era I really can’t say why.

With Gannon, I used to work in Nether Edge and catch the same bus home as an old Blade most nights and started chatting to him. He told me that the Gannon haters were idiots and that I should spend a match watching what he did, how much of our play went through him and how many chances he created, not get sidetracked by his lack of pace and sometimes poor tackling, that wasn’t what he was in the side for.

That’s probably shaped how I judge players, look at how the manager sets up the team, what are the key things he needs the individual players to do and are they doing it, rather than focus on obvious weaknesses, because most players have weaknesses and anybody with eyes can see them. So, if a manager keeps picking a player, try to work out why. If you can’t, then either you or the manager is getting it wrong.

I would say John Gannon too, I think it got to a point that a lot of us just looked for the mistakes and totally ignored the good stuff. He didnt deserve the stick he took.

That's what I looked at. Problem was him being so lightweight. Had all the skills to make a great footballer but not the physique. Very important in those days.
