I think you have indeed put you finger on something here, and unfortunately, I suspect it derives almost wholly from the Ched Evans episode - regardless of any rights or wrongs, it’s what a lot of people continue to retain as a perception - that the club stood by an “unsavoury” person.

No, let’s not mince words. They stood by a convicted rapist. Yes, his conviction was subsequently overturned but at the time he was released the club didn’t know that was going to happen.
