May 8th 2016 Sheffield United are booed off at Bramall Lane having lost 2-0 to Scunthorpe and finished the season 11th in League1.

May 16th 2016 Sheffield Wednesday are cheered off the pitch by their supporters after beating Brighton in the Championship play-off semi final. The Owls fans look forward to a trip to Wembley just one step from the Premier League.

February 12th 2020 Sheffield’s top ranked football club now lie just 2 points off a Champions’ League place in the Premier League and enjoy some warm weather training in Dubai during their winter break.

February 12th 2020 Meanwhile, Sheffield’s other football league club lose 1-0 to Luton Town in a midweek league match and drift further down the league table.

If you could have read those last 2 paragraphs about today on May 17th 2016 who would you have thought that they each referred to and how sick would you have felt?

That whoever would have posted that then, was full of our city cousin's deludomol.
Happily though......well....the city football history books are rewritten now.

They really are up shit creek right now and even more so when FFP hits them. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch

whickham s ripping up those championship defences as owls predicted
the final piece in the jigsaw

oooh buggar someones knocked the jigsaw on the floor

I watched the PoF with a Spurs fan. I have to confess that when Hull scored I went mental. My mate couldn’t believe it, obviously he knows I don’t like the pigs but he’s never seen me that bothered about their results before. I explained to him that if they had gone up, the gap between the two clubs would be bigger than it ever had been, that we were losing money every season and getting nowhere while they’d be raking in £100m, they could sort out the sty, they were big enough to potentially stay up, that they could push on and leave us in their wake.

I have never been so relieved over a result that didn’t directly involve us.

That was a big turning point and both clubs fortunes.

Wheel of fortune? Certainly luck played its part, with the appointment of CWAK and relative lack of injuries. But the tactical nous, motivational skills and meticulous transfer planning are little to do with fortune.

I was at that Scunny hime match and it’s probably the lowest I’ve ever felt in my 40+ years supporting United....I couldnt even be bothered to boo.

It suddenly dawned on me.....it doesn’t matter what we do.....we could be stuck in league 1 for another 10-20 years.
I was actually thinking we could become a Bradford or Notts County type of team.
I’d started taking my 8 years old grandson that season and he was actually enjoying our matches but I felt sad that he would never see us at a decent level.

The sadness was due to us showing massive ambition by appointing the BEST possible manager....let’s be honest Adkins had a fantastic cv.
Also loved Adkins positivity and post match interviews.....much much better than the dour Nigel Clough. We also bought some on paper, decent players, we even brought back die hard blade Billy Sharp. I thought... for once...we have shown some big ambition.....and yet we can only finish mid table.

In my mind I was preparing to wind my interest down and just attend the odd match the following season.
When we appointed Wilder I had no enthusiasm because I thought we were a cursed club destined to spend decades in league 1.
Our rise under Wilder has been like witnessing a miracle.....feel sorry for Blades that have recently died as they never got to witness our incredible rise.

I watched their final with a Wednesday fan.
Hull played perfect tactics....Wednesday controlled midfield and possession but rarely threatened their goal.
Hull didn’t have much possession but always looked dangerous on the break. The goal was coming and Hull definitely deserved to win.

As Hull kept missing chances and looked the better team I had this horrible thought that SW might score a late undeserved winner.
Has such massive relief when Hull scored their late goal....the Wednesday fan with me admitted that Hull were easily the better team on the day.
If they had been promoted that day....the football landscape in Sheffield would now be so different...it was a swinging doors moment.
