Institutionalised bullying

I can't read the story and I'm not registering for any News UK rag .

I'm amazed it's taken any one this long to notice to be honest

We aren't a dirty side, and we commit a normal number of fouls but we do rotate it about a bit

Our 1 suspension so far this season is a testament to the planning involved. Not sure what the fuss is about, I'm sure others do it

Yeah but when Liverpool, Spurs or Citeh do it, they’re being professional; when we do it, we’re ruining the game. ‘‘Twas ever thus. 😜😂

Decades ago the Sunday Times magazine ran a pictorial on the damage done to George Bests body during a game. Pictured in shorts, with full views of legs from, back and chest, he was covered in bruises and cuts. Maybe his bird did it as part of their love making? I liked the stud marks on his upper thigh best.
Never done with a perverted girlfriend who wore footy boots in bed. 😇🤷‍♂️
George Best 'I didnt become the footballer I am without getting tackled'

I think Syed is often very good indeed. But the biggest problem here is his coining of a term designed to click-bait. The phenomenon of teams planning to target an opposition danger man is as old as the hills.

Zaha and Palace are the perfect use case for Syed’s argument because they’re hopelessly reliant on him, and his game is partly about drawing fouls. Only Villa and Grealish come close.

Maddison is similar but opponents can’t afford to double up on him without releasing space for Barnes, Perez et al. So the organised cloggathon isn’t so easy to enact.

As for us, since our second year in the Championship we’ve become noticeably more ruthless with professional fouling. We shut down attacks nearer the source and accept yellow cards as the cost. I’d suggest we can’t afford not to given the quality of opponent.

It’s nonsense to single us out. But if there’s a fair way to punish a team for accumulation of fouls then I’m not opposed to it.

Remember the picture very well. If Georgie was alive today he'd have a right chuckle at the pussy-players diving around and feigning injury. Franny Lee, Norman Hunter, Billy Bremner, Chopper Harris, Mike Summerbee and Co would have missed at least half the season these days, or, more realistically, would never have made it through the ranks at all given their actual talents as a proportion of their overall game.

I don't have the stats to hand, but I'll bet our disciplinary record is pretty good given that we are an agricultural bunch of cloggers playing long-ball football better suited to League 1. We need to learn from the genuine talented established Prem footballers though and surround the ref baying for blood and red cards every time our talisman stylist goes to ground. Oooops - do we have any genuine talented footballers or talisman stylist though?

Francis Lee would laugh at people diving around? The same one that was nicknamed ‘Lee Won Pen’?

Exactly.

City are known for rotational fouling but that's another example of Pep's genius.

People loved our plucky refreshing start but now we havent gone away and known our place, we're judged with the likes of City, so if we dont pass teams off the pitch for more than a hour we've done it by clogging and being cynical.

Thankfully the internet is showing just as many people see beyond this.

Interesting article in the Athletic today about the increasing number of cynical little tactical fouls high up the pitch by the teams who dominate possession, but use little non-yellow-card trips and tugs upon losing the ball as their insurance policy against getting caught out.

Unsurprisingly, Man City and Arsenal clearly lead those stats. Football you to death with boring tiki-taka, then pull your sleeve the moment they lose the ball? THAT's institutionalized bullying, alright. :D
