Now the dust has settled and the JTW has passed i was thinking in the summer we don't actually need a massive signing spree. Obviously they will be a lot of deadwood going, but to sign first teamers it's going to take alot of £££ IMO.

The number one priority is sorting the goalkeeping situation. I'd offer Man U 20m - 30m for Hendo or even another loan ain't the worse idea. The other position would be a striker, probably abit of pace and goals adding. (Not easy i know) Will McGoldrick and Sharp be still around at their age and will Robinson be cashed in?

The best 11 picks itself imo and im struggling to replace any...

?(Hendo hopefully)

Sometimes replacing someone isn't the answer, just providing competition can bring out a different side of someone, hopefully this is the case in our side. Hopefully bringing in Berge brings out the best of Lunny again, and Zivkovic brings out the best in Mousset etc..

We'll do well to make one signing that improves the starting 11. And keep everybody.

I'm assuming Hendo will be here on loan again.

I have a feeling Robinson isnt done here yet, he's gone out on loan but it could be great for his development.

Surely the position in the Summer is first to keep the Core of this team mainly our wing backs and two of our back three plus Fleck.
We will have to work hard to keep two or three of them (at best) from leaving

With not needing many new players for the first 11 does it gives us more money to spend on Henderson? Say 30m max?

Maybe I’m wrong here but I think again we may need an over haul of the squad..

Here me out..

we appear to have a settled squad and it feels like that for the past 3/4 years but truth is we have had a relatively settled 11. With regards the squad itself the turn over has been pretty big.

This is easily attributed to a rapid rise in success, and it’s understandable, your squad players serve a purpose in the league you're in once you are promoted they are not fit for purpose it could be argued that finishing highly will be seen as another promotion and the squad over hauled yet again.

Henderson (Loan Ends)
Holmes (contract up?)
Restos (Loan ends)
Zivkovic (Loan ends)
Clarke (release)
Bryan (release)
Jags (retired)
Besic (Loan Ends)
Rodwell (contract up)
Ben Hennigen (contract up

then we have to consider
Ben Osborn
Kieron Freeman
Luke Freeman
Callum Robinson

These guys haven’t featured or have been loaned out and maybe looking to move on, I think CW will want to keep them all but who knows.

One thing that does stand out is the lack of fees received, transfermarkt states 19 outgoings and £0 received, in all honesty this shows Besic and Henderson so that’s 17 and then Jake Wright and Duffy twice due to the two moves they’ve made so 15 players either released, loaned or moved on. This isn’t a dig it’s proof of rapid squad evolution also means even if Jags doesn’t retire and we retain Rodwell then we need to make 4 moves to replace the loans (they maybe resigning the players we currently have on loan and also replacing Clarke this could be Robinson?

either way still another busy summer and I’d imagine it will be another 18 months before the squad is settled all the hangers on are gone and the first team is lean..

it’s worth noting that the club don’t seem to be holding back when moving on/paying off players

I wonder if there's a plan to go back to a number 10 next season?

It's more viable with Berge in there and maybe that could give us the confidence to try it.

I still think we're highly likely to start next season with the same system.

But someone who can play CM or AM equally comfortably should be on the list for sure.

To call any of the players that helped to get us where we are "deadwood" is hugely disrespectful.

We have certainly advanced beyond the abilities of much of our squad but that doesn't mean that they are not still decent footballers, albeit at a lower level.

Deadwood they are not.

For the most part they were a significant influence on our progress and therefore deserve a positive place in our history.

Even those that didn't reach the heights that we hoped for were at one time considered good enough by CW/AK and whilst they may not have lived up to expectations they are still decent footballers that played their part.

To look back at where we have come from in a short space of time and then refer to players that did it as "deadwood" is unnecessarily disrespectful and totally ungrateful.

In a way you're right but not fully. I agree they aren't bad footballers but to me they have played nothing to our success, therefore clearing out is needed.

These are my main players i meant as in 'deadwood'..
Holmes (Who?)
Heneghan
Thomas
Ravel

Players like K.Freeman, Clarke and Duffy played their part so they will go with a thankyou.

How about we leave it to wilder etc, and just enjoy the rest of the season
The JTW has shut and they're isn't anything to moan about under CW so discussing the good times ahead isn't end of the world.

Firstly, we have to consider there maybe a big bid for one of O'Connell and Egan. But, beyond, I think any player could be replaced, bar Fleck. We are competing at such a high level now and a lot of very good players will be in our reach financially all of a sudden. Certainly, I would expect a big signing upfront over the summer...and depending what happens with Henderson in goal.

GK if Henderson doesn't come back
New RWB to compete with Baldock, let K. Freeman go
Retsos permanently or a replacement to compete with Bash
Jags may retire, so competition for Egan is imperative
Besic likely to go back so a new CM/playmaker type to compete with Norwood
A new striker, pacy option to compete with Mousset

So that's 6, but no definite first teamers. Just competition. And I'm happy with that provided we don't lose anyone.

Henderson/Ramsdale
Retsos/RCB
CB
RWB/RCM/CM
CM/AM
FWD

That's assuming L.Freeman, Besic and Robinson leave.

Additional attacking player also desirable.

Osborn and Sharp could also leave in which case we'd need two more signings to replace them (really hope we keep Sharp around).

We'll be busy as always. A £30-35m net spend would be about right.

The squad is going to look quite scary. So I'll post some flames: 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥

Here's the current squad:

HendersonVerrips Moore
BashamRetsosRodwell
EganJagielka
O'Connell J Robinson
BaldockFreeman
Stevens Osborne
Noorwood Besic
BergeLundstram
FleckFreeman
McBurnie
McGoldrick
Mousset
Sharp
Zivkovic

Players in bold: Contract/Loan expiring
Players underlined: Loans with an option to sign permanently

Meaning that, as a matter of priority, we need a GK, CB, RB and either a LB or CM depending on which role is intended for Osborne.

If we dont sign Retsos or Zivkovic, then we'll need replace them too (RCB & ST). And Rodwell will be out of contract, so unless we use our option of another year on his deal, another space will be available.

I think the CWAK remit has changed. They may have been planning for a very different summer, but like their whole time here SUFC have moved on at a pace that wasn't expected. The PL summer budget may have been agreed with an anticipated finish of 14th-17th, now it's probably 4th-11th and a significant increase in the prize money (which I think has been used for Berge).

I would suggest they are operating with 3 possible scenarios for the summer, with very different budgets and targets.

1. A finish of 7th-11th. GK, some cover across the team and maybe a forward

2. A finish of 5th-7th and a Europa place. GK, 2 or 3 signings to challenge for a starting spot.

3. A finish of 4th or 5th and a CL spot. GK (definitely not a loan) and significant signings throughout the team to start.

There was talk of the club not being ready and equipped for any sort of European football, never mind CL. 'Get it sorted' will be the Wilder response if the unexpected happens.

The way I see it is that 8 places are pretty much set in stone with Berge taking the 9th and then a bit of Swapping around for the front 2.
We have of course been incredibly lucky with injuries and players not losing form.
I have been unable to work out if players like Luke Freeman and Ben Osbourne are good enough as they simply haven’t been able to force their way into the team due to the imperious performances of those “tried and trusted”
Wilders challenge in the summer will be to improve the squad by somehow finding players that have to be persuaded to join but cannot in anyway be promised to start.
To improve on Enda, JOC, Egan and others won’t be cheap either
Kin fascinating times ahead.

Win Sunday help relegate Bournemouth and get Brooksy back.

Would that be in our best interests?

An injury prone player, who plays in a role we don't use and would likely cost a huge amount.

If we're raiding Bournemouth, we should be looking at Ramsdale

Competition for Mousset but not Mcburnie?

Competition for Mousset but not Mcburnie?
Yes, exactly because McGoldrick already is.
Mousset needs some direct competition in terms of play, there’s no one quite like him in the squad with that raw pace and ability to turn defences. Zivkovic maybe but wait and see with that one, he’s a wildcard.
