We need to talk about Norwood

In an alternate reality Moose passes to Fleck and we score, winning 1-0 against reigning champions who have spent over £1.5 billion. That's what it cost them financially to beat us 1-0. So I'm with Mr Wilder and his feelings on anyone questioning Norwood or any other player for that matter. Bash is my favourite player and his mistake last night didn't lead to a goal fortunately, unlike his Leicester mistake. Still my favourite player. For the first time in my life we have a team to be proud of and my kids too. They no longer get the "who are they?" anymore, but still get"we're going to thrash you" from the kids at school. Has anyone thrashed us this year? No. Players will be upgraded in time but for now, every single player in the team get's and deserves our 100% backing
 



He is far too sloppy/casual at times and must be one of the biggest culprits for giving the ball away. He struggles when pressed and doesn't really shield the ball. He needs to work on all of these aspects of his game.

I think competition may improve his concentration. He's one who could probably use the odd rest.
 
I like Norwood, but everyone in the team needs cover. I see Rodwell as being a cheap punt to take on competition for both Basham and Norwood. If CWAK can get back his early career form we have a genuine rotation option to share some of the really heavy workload some of the lads are doing.
 
Everybody was walking about saying we’ve overachieved, it’s a pity some didn’t understand what that means..

Roygbiv pretty much nails this, much better players than Norwood have fared much worse results wise against those “mega teams” we are still overachieving.. so is Ollie..

Just read that back ,what an embarrassing post ,like a 3 year old wrote it.
From someone who thought Wilder was a joke for us and only ever appears when we have a defeat ,I think I will pass on your football punditry.

Worth a bump in light of today's news that we're back in for Berge. Shows Wilder's in agreement that perhaps we do indeed need to talk about Norwood.

currently 6 bookings away from suspension. After game week 32 (early April), he's 11 away
 



I love Oli, I think he is our most important player, although I realise he isn't perfect, or would be playing for Liverpool or City.
The reason he is our most important player is that our whole style of play is built around him. We are essentially a 'wide' team getting crosses in and across. He is clearly the supplier, sometimes exquisitely, to the wide areas. The problem is that we are fairly easy to nullify, if he is closed down and pressed. Luckily not too many teams have worked this out, but it has happened more and more of late.
Hopefully he can find his own way of overcoming these problems, because if he can we will be even better. At his best he is a delight to watch, and not since TC have we had a (long) passer of his ability.
 
Norwood is good at the "ping" and if he has time on the ball, (big IF in the Prem) he makes an intelligent decision 8 time out of 10.

What we are lacking IMO is a "Sander Berge" midfielder to take some of the pressure away from Oli and give him that time he needs to pick a pass....Lunny was starting to play this role but his form has seriously dropped off to the po9int where we are more than often going long rather than trying to play through the midfield.....we have also been playing with a flat 3 in midfield so Norwood has lost the ball to a CAM/No10 player that he so often played to Duffy at Championship level.

Midfield is certainly an issue for me.....but Norwood isn't the problem. We haven't got the balance of personnel quite right, bit round peg/square hole at times.
 
Apart from some of the constructive comments posted above, it's worth reminding ourselves about what's happened to the Blades ever since we lost the, at times, imperious Paul Coutts. Right up until his dreadful injury that put an end to his career, at least with the Blades, as well as any chance he would have had of meeting the challenges of the Premier division, Coutts was as central to our rise as any other player. For me, well PC was a revelation considering how, until Wilder's appointment, he'd shown technical proficiency but had little genuine impact on the side. Whatever turned an also-ran into one of the best players never to have graced the Premier Division, well only the thought of what could have been will remain.....which brings us onto Norwood, and boy, were we fortunate to have secured his services. Although a different type of player to Coutts, he managed to become the cog in the machine that enabled play to start, often deep in his own half, and for the ball to ping itself to either side of the pitch with superb accuracy. ON was just what we needed, and he's delivered in ways that have been a blessing, considering the depth of loss we felt with Coutts cruel injury that stopped his career with United. We should be grateful to have secured a player of Norwood's quality at a time when we appeared to face a vacuum in our engine room of considerable value. Norwood's done an excellent job in helping to galvanise our game and bring us to the heights of the Premier Division.
 
Just to add to my previous comments I don't think Didzy actually helps Norwood at all, watch a few games back and see how Didzy dropping so deep, (as good as he is) actually stops Ollie playing his natural game.....I think both together actually upset the balance, can overcrowd Ollie in Midfield and leave us short up top....not that I am for one second saying Didzy is the problem, just maybe that the two don't compliment each other...
 
Its amazing how many problems and shit players we have for a team in 8th place in its first season in the prem in 12 years
systematically some fans are going through our squad and tearing shreds off their abilities

I have watched us since 1960 as a boy of 6 and have not seen a better all round team considering the gulf in finances and squad strengths of some teams today

yet still some delight in assassination of their capabilities,, its fucking unreal

dont mind constructive criticism but some is just moaning big style for moanings sake

some owls fans give our squad more credit than some of our fans do

we are a point behind man utd and spurs not where norwich are and have played our 4 hardest games, 3 in the last month
Liverpool would not have dared to play the team that played at shrewsbury against us , they treat us like they did Barcelona

Personally I'm not shredding anyone, just making observations of where I feel we may be lacking or could be better. At the end of the day apart from watching football for over 40 years I know fuck all.....it's just opinions...some will agree, others wont.

we could be better in every position,,, if we had man city man utd spurs or liverpools cash backing
for our spending power we are batting 10 places above where we should be

this isnt aimed at one persaon , but the huge raft of this players not good enough shit threads appearing on here on a daily basis

this player was poor in his last game lets get shot threads

every pundit praises lundwood , some on here , oh hes a good spell but hes shit again now threads

Just reading back over the clubs he's played for and it amazes me the amount of clubs and calibre of clubs that moved him on after shorter periods of time: Reading, Fulham, Huddersfield, Brighton. Other people's passes are our gain - the lad is absolute class and even more so for the price we've paid.

Looking across the Premier League, there are a small number of centre mids who are elite (e.g. Kante) but beyond that, it's actually quite a level playing field, if not a little bit quality-light across many clubs. In my opinion, Norwood is right up there with the better CMs in terms of consistency and quality on the ball. He makes us tick and his delivery is superb.

There is obviously a reason why so many clubs felt he wasn’t PL standard.
Norwood has strengths and weaknesses.....his weaknesses mean he can‘t handle PL football.
However Wilder gives him a specific role where he uses his strengths over and over again and his weaknesses are covered by other team mates.
If Norwood went to another club he‘d struggle to get a game.

A point that hasn’t been raised.....is that Berge is seen as our future....his best position is just in front of the back 3.
He plays in Norwoods position so I wonder what Wilders plans are for next season? Will he play Berge and Norwood next to each other
or has he bought Berg to replace Norwood next season? That might explain the contract talk delays from the club.

Obviously I wish Norwood all the best....he’s been one of our most important signings in decades....we finally found someone to fill the boots of Coutts in his prime.
Norwood is also a great personality....model pro...and captain material....he deserves all the plaudits.

Hopefully he has an absolute stormer (well, it is the weather for it), show these tossers what they're missing.

Oli's a top player and I've seen enough of Berge to know he will be even better.
