You can't beat The Star...

Hope you’re never in a scenario where your employers go bust, Blade - even if you wish that on others.

A bit uncalled for from the poster you replied to, but even a rudimentary level of checking would have stopped the stupid errors. Your colleagues really aren't helping you to remain in employment.

That article wasn’t written today. A bunch of old posts, all bizarrely from around the Man U game, all reappeared on the website today.

That really doesn't make it better. Are you saying your website randomly digs up old stuff as a matter of course?

Fair play to you Danny for fronting up, but it looks like a right crock of shit to me.

Guessing it was just simple human error, someone accidentally clicked on "publish" on an old article on their web content management system. Not an uncommon thing, I've seen it happen in much bigger companies than The Star.

Yes, an easy error to make.

I often get an old stale dog turd out of the bin and put it on a plate for Mrs ISC.
Oh how we laugh!

They do not appear to have taken onboard any criticism levelled at their product. Then seem to be sat there wondering why fewer people are buying the paper.

In some ways the staff from top to bottom are all playing a part in its decline. If they end up out of work then it will because they ignored the endless feedback from their readers.

I'm not the biggest fan of the Star as it is in it's current state myself either, but an old article accidentally reappearing is summat and nowt and happens a lot on much bigger websites than them was my point.

Tea sounds fun at your house, think I saw that on the menu in an episode League of Gentlemen once ;) 💩

To be fair to The Star, they have been an inspiration to me over the years. Employing people like Burke, as a journalist, has given me confidence that perhaps I really can be anything that I want to be, in life. I don’t necessarily have to be good at it either.

Their output has been poor for a long time and they don’t seem keen at changing that anytime soon.

They failed to move with the times and have been left behind. Many media outlets around the world have run themselves into the ground. They scrape by with little staff and barely any staff that can produce decent content.

If there is one thing that the internet has done it's separated journalists that always got by winging it and serious journalists that do their research.
Yep. Many excellent journalists who do their own research and have an address book full of sources are now on the dole. They aren't appreciated any more because they cost too much to employ and were not trained to always write 'same day' stories that are 'ahead of the news cycle'

To get a job in journalism today you don't need to have studied journalism. You only need to be able to write reasonable English, and be willing to work long hours for peanuts

Many of the criticisms are due to decisions taken by Johnson Press or whoever owns it now. The editors won't have a choice. In fact, 'editor' is now just a fancy title for 'journalist'. Many editorial decisions will be made outside Sheffield

They’ve undoubtedly had their hands tied. However, I can’t see a situation where someone in London (?) has been eager to get a story in the paper about slices of white bread being stapled to trees, at Brincliffe Edge (for example).

They will have a policy of requiring 'quirky' stories that require no investgation and are easy to write. I'm sure the decision to use CAPS for emphasis is national policy too

It doesn’t make it better that an IT glitch threw up random old stories, rather than the (false) idea a writer thought United play Man U on Saturday when it’s actually Man City on Tuesday?

Quite possibly it wasn't even uploaded by someone who works for the Star. They've probably got some amalgamated set-up to upload stories from some central hub or summat.
Newspapers everywhere are on their arses, local ones even more than nationals.
That's reality as is the expectation created that the fruits of their labour should be available for free. Can't think of any other business where the owners decided to give their product away for free, relying only on advertising only.
And even then they invested sod all on their websites which are often near impossible to read.
Poor business decisions, poor management but very little to do with people on the shopfloor being lazy.
I worked in newspapers during the 80’and 90’s. Free distribution newspapers were very successful and paid fors continued to do well. When I was on the Daily Express in the early 80’s it sold over 2.2 million daily. It now sells 300k. The thing that has killed them is the plethora of free news sites on the web. If you value a free press and all that means for democracy, subscribe to decent ones or they’ll all be gone.

Honestly, I don't think so. If your IT is so shit that random old stories can be reposted as 'news', it just highlights what a shitty set up you have.

Your major national company relies on website income, so the transgender person on the Clapham omnibus, may well assume you would take it seriously and invest in it accordingly. I have a poxy little business with minimal digital presence, but even at this level, I can be pretty certain that my IT system will not randomly try to chuck me under the bus

Sterling defence of the Online Star from someone who will find fault with anything United do.

Re your opening line, who then takes responsibility? The Stars website has always been shocking as has some of the articles posing as journalism. If they’re simply uploading stuff from other sources, more fool them. In this instance, we have two experienced reporters covering United. Yet that piece was allowed to go out.

Dunno but it's not people being lazy is it. It's lack of resources, poor management, trying to run things on a shoestring. The sort of things that go wrong whenever a business tries to do too much on the cheap.

A bit of pride might help?

Facebook, Google.

Much as the Star would like to consider themselves a global concern, not really.
But it's interesting you highlight Facebook and Google and could probably have added Twitter, which have had a massive impact on generating and quasi producing news coverage for nothing.
The use of aggregators meant original news stories and their producers often got lost so Facebook and Google could make money out of stories from newspapers but the newspapers themselves much less so.
They've since recognised the unfairness of this and have been bunging money at more traditional journalism.
The BBC also recognised the danger of themselves coming to dominate the local markets through them receiving public money and are now funding reporters working for papers including the Star I think.
The business model wasn't and still largely isn't working for local papers. The reality they got it wrong by giving away their produce is now shown in their efforts to try to make people pay for it online.

www.s24su.com , to pick a totally random example of a free product that relies on adverts and donations, rather like several newspapers.

Doubt this website is a profit-making business or that it's a full-time business.
The problem for newspapers is that they involve employing people which costs money. When they then give away the produce of those people for nowt and rely purely on advertising the problems are obvious.
The quality obviously starts to decline, people are less likely to buy them and round and round it goes.
The sad thing is that the result is less decent news coverage in general and into the void come the conspiracies, the opinions masquerading as news etc on social media to the point that a lot of people don't really care about genuine news anymore and are instead wedded to opinions or 'news' which fit their pre-conceived ideas about the world.
They seek those sources of 'news' out (or they're sent their way by that there clever internet), amplify them and facts or harder news coverage get squeezed out in favour of the loudest voices shouting the loudest.

It was an IT glitch...

No, it isn't. It's the kind of mistake that's made when a business doesn't employ enough people.
Not having enough people to produce a decent output is partly why newspapers are in decline but it's more to do with the bizarre, in hindsight, decision to give all the output away for free online.
Or it’s a business that had no plan when the internet came along as a disrupter. It’s not like it didn’t have years to sort it’s shit out. That isn’t the fault of the people who work there of course.

Local paper output is difficult because you have to fill pages and how do you do that if fuck all is going on. It’s always easy to chuck rocks at them and they aren’t without fault, but it really isn’t the fault of the people on the desks.
Chronic lack of strategy and investment is more to do with the issues.

Back in the day, it was a good paper, obviously the quality is not there now. Fuck them, they are nearly done. Why should the lazy journalist’s be kept in a job?. If i am shit at my job then fair game, a lack of research and grammatical errors are fundamental mistakes of a reporter. Danny Hall and James Shields are better than the Star, their stories were the ones that are well thought out, well researched and most importantly did not contain grammatical errors. The paper has been run into the ground by Johnston press and online news stories, it’s no wonder they employ some wannabe journalists who are probably on minimum wage, it’s just funded by the hundreds of website advertisements now, rip the Sheffield stir 😂

What a shame, I used to work for the star in the late '90s, and the gazette briefly. Back then before the internet took off. It was fun, I used to finger certain ladies in the lift - oh the good old days.
