It does feel like this season in particular we’re less of a potent threat from set-pieces. One of my concerns heading into this season with VAR was that the reviews of every goal would mean we would abandon our intelligent-blocking that was used to great effect last season. I wonder whether this has had an impact.

Less than 3% of corners (closer to 2%?) lead to goals. So, that’s 1 every 35-50 corners. Not as productive as the excitement sometimes suggests.

Snodgrass delivered 3 or 4 corkers into our box the other night and I thought wow I wish we did a bit more of that.

Definitely think it’s a mixture of our quality of delivery, and our ability to get a run on defenders in the box. What has surprised me in the premier league is just how big and athletic a lot of the teams are.

Yep, agreed, fine lines though. Top of my head - VAR disallowed for McBurnie (freekick), Egan (Brighton) and JOC (Brighton)

Someone told me a statistic regarding Cardiff at the start of this season. Last year they were amongst the poorest sides in the premier league regards goals for and against at corners and set pieces. This is against a record in the previous championship season of being right at the top of the charts for both.

His point being - better defenders, better attackers and better coaching. Scoring goals will be harder, stopping the opposition will be harder.

If I knew what the next step was to improve us in this regard, I'd probably earn a living involved in professional football rather than writing/presenting powerpoint slides and messing around with spreadsheets for a living

Last night MotD highlighted Tammy Abraham employing some Billy-style gentle manoeuvring of defenders for his goal. It's covered by VAR*, but falls under clear and obvious.

If we have abandoned the blocking routines because of VAR, which seems like a reasonable hypothesis(!), then given the clear and obvious criteria, it might be worth digging out a few of the old classics.

Also, when is Jack going work up a thirst and go for a drink on the halfway line just before a corner again. I'd love to see some exalted Premier League tactical genius fall for that one.

Because our players aren’t diving twats like Felipe Anderson and his ilk. When we do dive it’s either Basham or Baldock and they’re crap at it.

McGoldrick’s been booked for diving I think. He doesn’t do it very often but I’m sure he got a yellow against arsenal for it.

If we get a free-kick in a shooting position (which isn’t that frequent because we don’t dive as often to try to get them), I’m never really expecting to see it fly into the top corner. I agree with that, Norwood whips some great balls in from open play, but his freekicks and some of his corners could be hugely improved.
Has he scored one since his debut?

Fleck can drill freekicks but his accuracy is very hit and miss (literally).

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a Knill special. One of those cleverly worked routines that out-thinks the opposition. Maybe it’s harder to fool Premier League teams (I doubt it) or maybe we just focus on other things in training.
