From Sunderland captain to Championship right back in the space of what, 6 months? Somehow I don't think so.

Seamus Coleman on loan from Everton would be a better bet anyway, very good young player.

Google the last 24hrs of Phil Bardsley news and it would seem that the story originated from the sheffield star or sheffield telegraph. Could be some truth in it, but did anyone really rate him when he was here?

Also, i guess he's on silly money at sunderland. He was a Roy Keane signing after all.....

I rated him, I think most others did too. He was just overshadowed by Gary Cahill. Good solid full back but he'll be on at least £12,000 a week.

If United had a reasonable scouting network, I'm certain for the money it would cost to bring in a player such as Bardsley a better player is out there, if not in the UK then overseas.

Although the link to Bardsley seems unrealistic due to the finances at the club, signing a right back has to be one of Blackwell's main transfer objectives in the summer.

Spending money (which we haven't got a lot of) on a right back could prove to be a waste if Matt Lowton breaks into the team.

Blackwell's main transfer objectives ?

I reckon we'll see the right back position covered by an academy lad next season. I reckon LB will be a more pressing need if Naysmith doesn't like the terms we offer. We definitely need a quick centre back too.

And apart from that we also need a new CM, and another winger and a shit off a shovel centre forward too.

Centre half's going to be by far the biggest problem IMO. We'll be left with Morgan and no one else.

We'll have 15 players come the 1st of June - Kenny, Aksalu, Lowton, Morgan, Taylor, Stewart, Quinn, Williamson, Yeates, Ward, Reid, Cresswell, Henderson, Evans, Sharp. It's clear what area we'll be most lacking in.

I think any money we have will have to go towards getting a good centre half, I reckon we could get by without spending too much in other positions.

I didn't particularly. In fact it was odd that he kept Geary out of the team, given Geary had been one of the few people to perform under Robson. Very slow, average passing, but did have a strong shot that whilst resulting in zero goals did seem to convince people that he was actually a good player. The £1.5m that they paid for him was laughable, and from the Mackems I know he's been a bit of a disappointment. I'd rather we stuck with Nosworthy, who at least gives us some amusement on a Saturday.

I think he's a good all round full back - certainly a lot better than Nosworthy in that position. I'd be happy to see them both sign, but there's no chance of that.

It wouldn't surprise me though if rumours like these surfaced day in day out through until the summer - a few more might renew if they're tricked into thinking we'll be spending some money.

I've heard he almost joined as part of the kilgallon deal, no source though, it was word of mouth.

Up front will be the last place we spend money.

Even though this originated from a reliable source I still find it very hard to believe given the financial situation at the club. Having said that, if we're looking at a required 14 players for next season the club are going to have to make decent money available. There is no way on earth we would be able to sign 14 Championship quality players using free transfers and loans solely.

I think it would be an excellent signing. The full back positions are really weak at the moment and it is an area we badly need to strengthen. We also need a centre back and a decent wide player on the left. We need to pad out a lot of areas but they are the ones I would focus on.

Does anyone know of Bardsley's contractual situation? Perhaps it is due to expire, hence the link to ourselves. I rated him when he was here on loan. He and Cahill shone in a struggling side. Bardsley is decent going forward as well, has a cracking shot on him as I remember. If we could get him and Nosworthy from Sunderland I would be delighted with that.

If United had any bottle about them they would sign those two, keep Naysmith and have a back four looking like this;

Bardsley Morgan Nosworthy Naysmith

Looks pretty mean in front of Paddy I think! :D

(likely scenario will see Morgan alongside 3 different players)

Looks pretty expensive and therefore isn't going to happen. For shame.

True Bob. What depresses me to the core though, is the idea that a back four of those players is too expensive for us

The fact that we can't afford such players shows what a dire state football is in. Not just our club!

I would guess the lowest wage earner out of that lot would be Morgan. That can't be right.

Naysmith is on between 15-17K you could safely assuming Nyron and Bardsley would be on more than that at Sunderland.

I wouldn't expect them to be on as much as that. I have been given the impression previously that Naysmith was on about 10-12k at Everton and I doubt we gave him a pay rise, unless you have a source? I can't imagine Nyron earns more than 10k max at Sunderland. I would imagine Bardsley would be the highest earner of the four. I would guess around 15k a week.

Just to echo what others say really. He was ok but for the money wed have to spend to get him we can do better.

Bardsley didn't set the world alight when he was here last time under that geordie dickhead, so I can't see the point in bankrupting the club getting him back.

I think he is a solid enough right back and would love him back, i just have a feeling they will be a few clubs ahead of us looking for his signature.

Coleman would be good but they wont sell him. We need to get our own players in or risk the same problems we've had this season with loans. If Bardsley is a realistic possibility then we should sign him. Very good player.

IMO i think he'll end up at a lower premiership side or a newly promoted side. Can't see him coming back

Naysmith is on 15-17K and is currently the best paid player at the club, which is why is contract won't be renewed.

I think your impression of Premiership wages is slightly out of kilter. The average Premiership wage this season is about 30K a year or aprox £1.5 Million a season.

Naysmith was heard on RS to say that he would have to take a pay cut on his next contract no matter who it was with.

I hope steady Eddie [as I call him] stays with us.

I like Naysmith but he would have to fit into the new wage structure and prove he is over a horrendous injury. Given his age I have my doubts about reoccurring problems and I wouldn't make him one of my highest earners.

It won't only be Naysmith that has to fit into a new pay structure. I've a feeling that the poor sods playing in the CCC next season may have to survive on 4/5K a week.

Poor bastards and Labour are going to try and take 50% of that as well in tax. Some of these players have wives and families to support too.
5K a week, how are they supposed to drive a Bentley and live on that I know I couldn't.

Naysmith will have to take a pay-cut purely down to his recent spate of injuries. He's moved from the solid performer to 'risky' after the last two years. That said; I'd happily see Naysmith and Bardsley on either wing.

Can Blackwell justify having Naysmith, Stewart and Taylor at the club next season?

I don't think he can. Naysmith will leave at the end of his contract and although he'll have to take a pay cut, he will still get better offers from elsewhere.

It will be a loss on the footballing side but United have done reasonably well without him this year and will be a good saving on wages.

If we get injuries like we have this year, he'll need more than them three :)

Hopefully there won't be an injury crisis lasting 46 games next season but if there is he could always get a player in on loan.

Bardsley would be a good signing and a welcomed one by many fans. Personally, i'd prefer Seamus Coleman but i'd imagine Everton wouldn't allow this because of the way Utd dealt with the Walker/Naughton deal, i remember Everton and Moyes been annoyed with us for that. I'd like to see Lowton get 90 minutes before the end of the season.
