FA Cup opponents - scouting report.

My friend follows Barrow home and away, she has just sent me the following after her visit to Fylde.

'They’re a dirty, dirty side. Constant shirt-pulling, bad tackles, holding players on the floor etc etc, and then surrounding the ref after every decision. On Boxing Day the ref was changing decisions under pressure and basically allowing them to intimidate him, but it was better today.
Keeper is a bit shaky. Number 12 cleared several crosses that the keeper should have had. Keeper also likes to have a wander - he was out of his area several times today and not really in control.
Danny Rowe (ex Barrow) is the main threat up front. Jordan Williams (ex Barrow) is very quick, has a long throw and will put your keeper under pressure. He was virtually sitting on our player today on the edge of the area, then tried to fight him when he objected... Kyle Jameson (ex Barrow and West Brom) is strong in defence.
Kyosolo (I think that’s his name - 7) came on as sub and had 3 attempts on goal. Very quick and skilful, but then got sent off, so I don’t know if that rules him out of the cup game?
Overall, I hate Fylde and I hope you stuff them!!'

I’m no Silent Blade, but I think that must be Burscough, in about 1978/9, who were in the Cheshire League and at least we won, 3-0.

I have a vague recollection that we were drawn to play away, but the fixture was reversed, to get a bigger crowd and therefore revenue. That was common in those days but doesn’t seem to happen now.

Not allowed to happen now. Clubs only allowed to enter the FA Cup if there ground is capable of hosting a home game. If, for whatever reason, police and safety stop the game being played then it has to go to the nearest suitable neutral venue.

The Cup 4th round tie we played in '59 we were in the good old Southern Premier League, which back in the day had a great history of producing some strong teams and plenty went onto the football league from it....

There were only 36 league clubs in 1901 though Jonny. The Southern League was effectively a regional third tier and the closed shop nature of the Football League meant that no matter how good the sides below they were unlikely to be admitted. Spurs weren't admitted until 1908 - 7 years after winning the FA Cup.

What about Corinthian when we beat them 5-0 in the 1st round of the 1924-25 FA Cup? I couldn't find out the league they were in at the time. They merged in 1939 to become Corinthians Casuals.

they weren’t in a league at all. They didn’t play competitive matches save for the FA Cup.

well, there were only 3 league tiers at that time and they were likely as good as the top non league teams. They’d knocked first divisionBlackburn out the season before, and beat a couple of third division sides around the same time. They were the best amateur players in the country essentially.

It’s probably more accurate to say they were unranked.
