VAR VAR is not destroying my enjoyment of games

I like to think that at Brighton I got to celebrate three goals for the price of one

Deliberate handball by a Southampton player in the penalty area didn't go to VAR, despite it being the most obvious deliberate handball in the area I've seen this season. Many of our offside goals were too close to call and can't decisively be said to have been the right call. VAR was brought in "for clear and obvious mistakes" don't forget, not for finicky little margins that the technology isn't even sophisticated enough to make an accurate judgement call on. Liverpool had an obvious penalty not given against us, and Leicester's second goal should have been disallowed for a clear foul on Egan. That's before we go into the inordinate amount of time it takes to make the decisions, and how this effects the momentum of a momentum based sport (see the Southampton game for an obvious example). On top of all that, there is the way it effects celebrations in what is, after all, a spectator sport.
They weren’t close to call with VAR that’s the point of it being there
What I don’t agree with is someone whose body is in line or behind a defender whose body going through a moving motion is going to be offside due to an elbow or a pinky or a knee cap

Too late to stop that little bit of wee (for the older gentleman).
Having sat on the Kop for years, Lady HB used to always check out who was sat behind her in case of “tumbling” once/if we scored. Now it’s more a quick chat to see whether it’s a selfie or hands in the pocket waiting for VAR.

McBurnie against Southampton wasn't offside - they judged Egan to be offside but he wasn't interferring with play per se (other than being on the pitch). Very harsh, I know summat - if Salah pops that goal in, it doesn't get overturned.

As an aside to whether the decision is in fact the correct one, how about the fact that it kills spontaneity, creates uncertainty and leaves thousands of fans waiting and wondering what the hell is happening?

As fans we are removed from the game for a period of time whilst some mysterious person or persons arbitrate on an incident which we do not benefit from seeing as they see it. That’s what’s wrong about it, above all else.

Yay VAR !!!!! i haven't celebrated a blades goal in a few games - but as long as they're 100% correct, that's fine :)

Just thought I'd give an alternative viewpoint, high prominence rather than buried on page 20 of another anti VAR thread.

Mcburnie v soton was off
So was JOC v Brighton
Egan was a hand ball (by the new rule)
Moose was off yesterday - although very marginal

Didsy's at Spurs is the only one I can't get my head around. I'd also say Basham should have had a pen in Norfolk.

I'm loving watching the blades this year
With respect you’re missing the key point, in that the current technology does not have the capability to accurately allow decisions to be made on marginal offsides - therefore VAR in its present form is not fit for purpose.

Taking the Liverpool conspiracy theory away, Egan was interfering with play. Offside is the correct decision. Even so, how is it ruining the enjoyment of watching this great team

I don't get how he was - unless my memory is playing tricks, he wasn't in line with the delivery and goalkeeper ?

In answer to your 2nd question, as heartbreaking as it is, i just can't watch the product in it's current form.

With respect, my main point is not a defence of VAR, I'm saying very clearly that it isn't ruining my enjoyment of watching this great team

They were. The technology VAR uses is nowhere near sophisticated enough to distinguish between such fine margins. The margin of error is far too big with the flawed technology they currently use. We can all accept that the results are equally flawed for all teams, but doesn't that contravene the very reasons that VAR was introduced in the first place? To give an objective, correct result, in place of of a flawed subjective one? Remember: Var was introduced for "clear and obvious mistakes", so these calls shouldn't be referred to VAR anyway.

My memory is that Egan tries to get onto the cross and just missed it. I assume the view was that the keeper was distracted

Just seen this on the BBC Website:

"Lukas Brud, general secretary of the International Football Association Board, said: "With VAR we see some things that are going in a direction that we may need to re-adjust."

He said the body would reissue guidance on VAR's use after its annual general meeting in February.

"If you spend multiple minutes trying to identify whether it is offside or not, then it's not clear and obvious and the original decision should stand," he said.

He added: "What we really need to stress is that 'clear and obvious' applies to every single situation that is being reviewed by the VAR or the referee.

"In theory, 1mm offside is offside, but if a decision is taken that a player is not offside and the VAR is trying to identify through looking at five, six, seven, 10, 12 cameras whether or not it was offside, then the original decision should stand."

At least they understand there are problems with VAR and they are going to address them. These comments also clarify that "clear and obvious" relates to every situation, including off side.

A subjective opinion not a "clear and obvious error". Conclusion: goal should stand.

Agree with that mate. But is it good for the game?

It’ll be like American football soon if we’re not careful. Advancing a few yards at a time then stopping to wait for the next official intervention before we carry on.

Already I’m sick of seeing the ref touch his lug hole. It’s like being at a folk concert rather than a football match. Oh yes, and I’m sick of seeing him do that rectangle shape an’ all! For a start he draws it far too small. Don’t they realise we’re all watching these days on minimum 60” plasma screen tellys?

That’s encouraging at least and it mirrors what I said after the Spurs game when it took nearly 4 minutes to decide it (and still got it wrong)!

Well we are really being shafted by VAR
If that article is correct that armpit offsides are to be stopped then that would be good. However, when that goes against us this year, there will be uproar on here.

If I had 'tumbled' yesterday I would just about be getting to the pitch now

He’s basically described how it should have been introduced in the first place 😂. Very difficult to now move back from what they have used so far this year.

You know what’ll happen, the common sense approach will come in and we’ll concede several ‘armpit offside goals’

VAR is bollox

Football was football as it should be both on and off the field when the United documentary was shown from 1989. Working class sport. It’s not the same game but I still go week in week out at the Lane more out of love for United not football in general as such

Are you sure? They seem to be making changes every few weeks already

lts the refs and Stockley Park clowns that are making decisions. The rules are what they are.
As has been said, the technology isn’t up to the job, nor people like Riley and his apologists.

I get what you're saying, and agree that VAR is not 'ruining' my enjoyment of our return to the bigtime. However, it is tempering my enjoyment.
Imagine how much more you would be loving this season without VAR. If Didsy's goal stood at Spurs and we take 3 points, If Moose's goal yesterday had given us a lead to hold on to at the current champs?

For the Southampton handball I've never seen a replay so wouldn't know.

Last night's decision is t wrong by the rules. I think that makes the rules shit by the way, but how can VAR overrule a correct decision?

Ward-Prowse stopped a goal scoring opportunity with his handball.

And BettingBlade Just found a 10 minute highlights package and seen it properly with all the TV angles. What a joke.

I'm sure it wasn't really highlighted in the short highlights you post after the game and there is no way I'd see that from the back of the kop.

Exactly what VAR should be over ruling.

However, having watched the 10 minutes of highlights, my overriding thoughts are " what a fucking good team we are" and what a good game.

We're all loving watching the Blades but sorry whatever you say about VAR it's still horseshit.

We'll you say that but there are plenty of posters on Here today stating that it is ruining their enjoyment and some even stating that they have/will stop attending.

I think they are fucking mad. I've never had so much fun, literally can't wait for the next game
