Referee gave the goal, so had to be ‘clear and obvious’ to overrule it - I’ve watched it 6 times now and still can’t tell whether he handled it or not! If VAR is to have a chance of winning people round, they should be forced to release the actual footage that convinced them that the ref’s decision was wrong.

It did appear to come up off the thigh, onto his wrist & in. But it was goal bound anyway & Egan had no chance to move his hand out of the way before it went in. I don't even know the handball rules anymore, never mind actually understand them. Seems to be a lot of room left for subjectivity.

because that is the current rules.

it’s OK for defending teams to accidentally hand ball it...the rules say if it’s handball....then no penalty.
Our if a goal is scored and the attacking team accidentally hand ball it...then the rules say the goal must be disallowed.

Seems harsh and using the spirit of the game it should have counted but if you know the rules before the match....then you can’t really complain. Just bad luck.

There's exactly zero room for subjectivity and that's the issue, that's the new rule. If it comes off anybody's hand, it's ruled out.
 
There's no way that anyone could be sure if it touched his hand or not from the angles available. I'm convinced it went in off the top of his thigh after seeing it about a dozen times. If it did touch his hand, it must have just brushed the hairs on the back of it. How the fuck could they tell from those camera angles. VAR needs binning. End of.

But defensively there seems to be all sorts of new insertions - hand in an unnatural position, intent, did they have time to move their hand etc.

VAR seems so keen to rule out goals & reward defensive teams. Seems an odd way of refereeing a game that relies on attacking play & goals for entertainment. In rugby, if there's doubt you go with the attacking team.

You probably need an eye test 😁

Clearly hit his hand. Law's are if the ball hits an attackers hand in the build up to a goal then it is handball whether deliberate or not.

As crappy as that may be, it went in off his hand - I'd have expected it to be possibly disallowed under the old rules. Umder the new rules there is no question.

I do not like how VAR is used within the ground but you cannot argue with it today in terms of the decisions.

The rules are clear.

Subjectivity applies to defending teams regards penalties. If the ref thinks it’s ”accidental” handball, then it’s no penalty.
But there’s no subjectivity regards goals scored. Even if there’s accidental handball off the finger tip, then it’s black and white...seems harsh but the rule is no goal.

Some of our fans are sounding like Pig fans and FFP.
Agree the rule possibly should be changed....but VAR was correct on the Egan goal....the current rules say no goal....no arguments just bad luck.

Ah but this is where the new handball law apparently comes in... if it touches the hand, it’s handball.... which is great... Clear? Pat on the back for Mr VAR...

Except McBurnies v Man U also hit his hand... and that was given? Why? The law is apparently any time the ball touches a hand it’s hand ball.

And then there was Everton v arsenal. Ball hits arsenal players hand. No VAR decision. Why?

Didn't the PL come out and say it was given because it hit his shoulder, which isn't classed as "handball"?

I thought Handball was below the elbow.

You sure on that? All the commentators and pundits believe that we’re all clear that the law is that if the ball touches the hand it’s handball

Can’t argue that VAR was not correct today. BUT you can’t celebrate a goal any more. VAR is cancelling goals out. Who thought that would be good for the viewing public? Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. It should be there for the ref if he decides to call on it.
Put people with mud on their boots back in charge rather than square eye gaming generation. This isn’t FIFA 20.

I know it’s the rules but my question still stands.

What’s the point disallowing a goal for the slightest of touches of the hand, same applies to Antonio last week?

May as well have a rule that you can’t score with the same foot twice in a row, absolutely pointless.

He was running at the ball full pelt, it hit his thigh then his hand, if it hadn't have hit his hand there was no where for the ball to go other than into the goal anyway.

Yeh agree with that.

Andy Gray said the same on Behin Sports....he said he knows the law says it should be disallowed but said in this case the law is an ass.
The minor deflection of his hand had no effect on the ball....it was going in anyway.

Andy Gray said applying the “spirit of the game“, the Egan goal should be allowed.

I think thats harsh. I've also watched it loads and can't see a handball. Maybe I've not seen the right angle but looks very harsh to me!

Hand in the context of handball is the arm from the shoulder down. Simple really.

McBurnie's goal against Man U came after the ball came off the top of his chest not his arm.
