Media attention, scouting and coaching has focused on our wonderful overlapping centre half trick. Anyone that watched last season and before under Wilder will agree.

However, it’s allowed us to play a new trick. A little bit of a con. Whilst teams look at our centre halves, they aren’t tracking Lunny and Fleck bursting from deep.

Lunny and Fleck are playing in a way that most clubs aren’t really tracking. I don’t think it’s because it’s so smart that they don’t see it, but it’s because they can’t concentrate enough to track it because they come from so deep.

The good thing about Wilder, is his ability to adapt to the opponents style/tactics quickly. That's why he's such a good manager.

He's a good motivator too, I bet there is a lot of quotes pinned around the walls from some "journo's"

It’s amazing how quietly this has become our new thing... as soon as teams and the media realise what we’re doing, we’ll be onto something new.

Wouldn`t surprise me if that was the original intention when Wilder and Knill devised the system. Crafty fuckers.

Was at the Sharp / Edwards night on Thursday, and Billy did indeed confirm that Wilder pins pundits quotes and thoughts on the notice board to provide motivation (as if it was needed) :)

We've scored a ridiculous amount of goals from the midfielders steaming in, so I think you're on to something.
I would love to see the stats for deep runs from Beans and the intelligent stattos amongst our fan base

It’s not really a flat three when we attack, which seems to be throwing teams

It's a tribute to CWAK that even I, with my footballing brain the size of a planet, can't tell what they are doing. How you manage to get a 4 to 2 overload against a Premier team within 5 seconds of a ball being played from the keeper is beyond me.

It does seem to be intentionalb

I think primarily it was to cope with the attacking threats of this division.

But it does give us two midfielders being allowed to regularly bomb forward into the box off the ball, while our former formation had Duffy roaming/linking and Fleck having to be a bit more careful with his forward runs. He's already doubled his goal tally from the promotion season.

He doesn’t have much to do with the fitness either... but he pulls everything together using experts. That’s management

Exactly.

He's said before in interviews that he leaves the tactics to Knill because he's a bit obsessed with it.

That's why they compliment each other perfectly.

We needed to adapt, that’s true, but we also needed more attacking runs from midfield. So they have to be fit to do it game in game out... but there is definitely an intent there since the first game or so

Always thought it's about more than that, the fact the centrebacks overlap is only as important as the fact that someone's always covering them, and they always know who it's meant to be, and if they aren't overlapping Lunny's charging forwards, and if he isn't Baldock and Stevens are. Might be the beers talking but it's total football at times, and the centrebacks overlapping is just a cog the machine.

I honestly don't think Wilder has much to do with our tactics.

I’ve been told a few months ago face to face by someone very senior at the club that it’s Knill that comes up with all the tactics and formations ideas
and it’s Wilder who has the final say regards if they are implemented or not. Wilder is the manager but he does have a great backroom team behind him.

Also there was an actual interview with Wilder on Radio Sheffield 2 years ago.
Wilder said something to the effect that he thinks football is a simple game and many managers over think/ over complicate tactics.
He joked that he’s never been massively interested in tactics whereas Knilly is obsessed with tactics.
Wilder joked that he wouldn‘t be surprised if Alan Knill dreams about tactics in his sleep.

Agree, look at Lundstram’s early goals and performances. We’ve just become a bit more adventurous as we’ve got used to the PL.

I bet there isn`t.
