No knee jerk reaction to last night, thought it for sometime.

Eternally grateful for everything Billy Sharp has done for SUFC but he's not a Premiership striker and his time is surely up. Say what you like about McBurnie but Billy spends most of his time on his arse looking for fouls, his first touch is more than often poor and he is slow in thought and movement.

Our strikers worry me more than anything and a lack of goals could prove to be our biggest problem.

Moose has been brilliant but can't do it all and his fitness is still an issue, plus he looks like he may pick up a knock at any given moment. Didzy can't hit a cows arse with a banjo but everything else is good, McBurnie still finding his feet, (although I thought he was better last night) and Robinson hasn't looked anywhere near good enough.

We simply must strengthen up top in January. Billy, thanks for the memories but probably time to go for a pay-day in MLS...

Yep, I mean all strikers who have had 200 minutes spread across the previous 13 games would come into the side and light the game up wouldn't they?! What is wrong with people?

Harsh. I didn’t think Sharp did too badly. Just didn’t get himself into a goal scoring position.

Sharp is exactly the same player he’s always been, he’s still got it....don’t write him off.

BUT he‘s always lacked a yard of sharpness, so he needs the ball playing to his feet....then he’ll generally score.
The problem is the PL is a higher standard so it’s harder to pass directly to his feet....usually you knock it into space for a forward to run on to.

Also its a mistake to use last nights match to make judgements.
Newcastle packed out their area so whenever Sharp went for the ball there was often 3 players around him.
No wonder he found it so difficult to find space.

When teams park the bus there’s 3 tactics that must be used.

1: You bring on a “big lump” who can stand on the penalty spot and be a nuisance, we’ve had success with Hanson and Madine in the past.
2: You bring on a tricky dribbler, who can take on defenders, we’ve had success with Duffy and to a degree Brooks in the past.
3: Another option is to try shots from outside the area....that’s an aspect that seems missing from this team...we rarely try shots from distance.

However I don’t expect any other PL team apart from Watford to replicate the Newcastle tactics...approaching the match as tho they’re playing Barcelona.

The Billy Sharp of last season buries that header in the first half. Think it's harsh saying he's done when he's hardly kicked a ball this season, he's bound to be rusty.

Sharp worked hard and got the ball in good positions, however if there is anyone who would miss Duffy it is him. McGoldrick is better at linking the midfield with attack. I think now McGoldrick is the only real option for Sharp to play with.

We lost because sharp and mcburnie played and on the whole didn't do too bad, mcburnie on another night with a keeper not in top form has 2, sharp having a go vs 4 defenders and midfielders.
Our midfield was way off the pace, Norwood couldn't pass water, fleck had the worst game this season, Stevens and baldock seemed a little off their games and the defence seemed a little sluggish and not at their best, so to me only lundstram, Henderson and considering lack of game time mcburnie did well and sharp did his best.
For those saying about moose, how exactly would his pace help vs 9 tightly packed defenders playing deep?

Agreed . I thought he played ok , showed for the ball , linked up ok and was busy around defenders . On another night mcburnie scores 2 first half and everybody's wanking themselves silly about European football instead of predicting our complete demise as a club. We've exceeded expectations up to now but there's going to be some real peaks and troughs coming between now and May and guess what , we're going to lose some more football matches and win some . So everyone get some backbone , enjoy the ride and if when may comes were 17th or higher , it's job well done

Always a risk changing a winning side for no reason. Thought front two played well first half. Love our style of play but two down with 10 minutes to go necessitates the need to get the ball in the area and hope for a bit of luck, not playing from side to side across the back. Sharps still good enough for an impact sub but probably not a starter. He owes us nothing.

Sharp did ok. Trouble was he was having to work in too many areas and nobody ever got ahead of him. I suspect he'd be quite effective playing with Moussett tbh.

Thought he looked a little out of sorts, which is understandable given lack of game time. He seemed to need multiple touches to get the ball under control/out of his feet. Also felt he missed 3 very good chances.

• The one on one - difficult given angle and him have to slide in
• The header across the face of goal
• The offside chance in 2nd half. Yes I know the linesman flagged (means nothing these days) but I still like for strikers to bury them. Think of Clarke v Liverpool (It would have been offside but bury it).

It was a frustrating evening all round and maybe, me included, we are hypercritical of him. If we'd got something from the game I probably wouldn't even contribute to this thread.

I'm still raging. Never felt like this after a normal game

I am not a major Norwood fan but he bossed the middle of the park for very long periods.....because they let him. The weakest in the middle was Lundstram followed by Fleck. Have to say though that none of them played bad just, meh. Stevens and Baldock had a difficult time because the barcodes were packed 5 and 4. First goal against the run but the second, on the break, always looked possible although the way it happened was piss poor. Our problem is that in this league you might only get 3 or 4 chances a game. At least one or two need to be taken if we are going to survive.

He's not a starting striker, but I thought he kept the ball well, closed people down, and linked up pretty well. If he was coming on for the last 15/20 minutes when we're protecting a lead then I think he has a lot to give and might even add to it.

In fairness Mousset is best with space to run in to, that was never happening so the choice of Billy who can find space in a packed area made sense. Sometimes a good idea just doesn’t come off. Their keeper played a blinder and on another night we get the first goal and they then have to loosen up which gives Moose the space he loves.

I thought we played more like a team with Sharp on pitch. He holds the ball with his back to goal better then any other striker at the club.

Sharpe did a get a rum do last night the defenders were hands on all the time. Just before the yellow card the Newscastle player had his arms round Sharpe it was clear on the TV and then he got that yellow card but no mention of Sharpe being held. It was just one of those horrible matches we had to get out of the way so we dont think we are like Liverpool and unbeatable. We've given all the nay sayers and critics a bloody nose so its time to hit the knockout blow. Now its gone we can continue on with the rest of the lower PL teams and hopefully have a good Christmas.

I think even in the minutes they’ve had together when Sharp’s come off the bench, he and McBurnie don’t seem to have that understanding yet to play as a pair – it reminds me a little of the early days of the Clarke/Sharp pairing before it finally clicked when Clarke got his 2nd extended run in the side that lasted all the way to the end of the season (and indeed in the Championship afterwards). I don’t think either Sharp or McBurnie completely know what role each should be doing. That’s probably only natural with the limited time together, but even so it might be a case of this sort of understanding just not happening. If Sharp starts again I feel it’s got to be with McGoldrick or Mousset, but I fully expect us to go with McGoldrick & Mousset at every opportunity for the foreseeable. And rightly so too.
