SUFC England hopefuls

They’re also young players, so ones for the future. They’ve also come through all the England age groups which helps.

Henderson has, and is roughly the same age.

JOC has also been through the youth system.

Don't see how they're at a disadvantage, except for in Southgate's mind.

Lundstram has also been through the England youth set up, he captained the Under 19s.

Who isn’t performing for England? Last time I checked we’ve hammered our qualifying group.
Seriously. I could name 5/6 that have been abysmal of late.

Henderson, everyones favourite Declan Rice, and the whole of the back 5 in the past few games (Bulgaria aside).

If JOC gets picked for England and does well, he’ll be off. Be careful what you wish for.
I appreciate this viewpoint but with how JOC has been performing for us he could bring bids in the January transfer window anyway. What an England call up does bring is a bigger fee if he were to leave.

Everyone will be watching JOC regardless, I don’t think it matters whether he plays for England or not, the bloke is a terrific player and will go on to gain bigger achievements, with or without us.

You’re comparing 3 highly rated young players who are now playing Champions League football at the ages of 21, 20 and 18.

Lundstram and O’Connell were playing League One/Two at that age. They are now both 25 so it’s going to take a bit of time putting in good, consistent performances over at least half a season to get a chance.

It’s also going to be difficult to force their way in with qualification achieved and a Euros to prepare for, it’s less likely Southgate is going to bring in many new faces at this time. After the Euros, it’s more likely he’ll make changes with two years to prepare and qualify for the World Cup.

I’m not saying we have a world class squad, but I don’t see anyone out there that is playing at an unbelievably high level and not getting pick for England squads.

It’s all about opinions really and we’d all pick slightly different squads, but I don’t see any glaring errors in Southgate’s squad selections.

I was stunned at Henderson omission, because only utd & man city have 5 clean sheets. conceded 8 goals. so of course you pick the burnley GK, team just lost 3-0 has conceded over double our total

And in the last few months he’s made two massive howlers, one for the u21s and one for us.

but that's problem with goalkeepers we remember the 1pt he cost us v Liverpool but not 2 great saves he kept us in the game v mane & salah or 6-8 pts he gained us from great saves over the season

Keepers are supposed to make saves. If he chucks one in during a England game he’ll get hammered, nationally. He’s been called up before, Southgate’s watching him regularly, he obviously thinks he’s not ready yet.

Why not?

If players aren't performing, why should they continue to be picked. Makes a mockery of the selection process in my view.
While I agree Southgate has to try and keep some form of continuity. Don't forget it takes time for players to gel which won't happen if they're constantly rotated.

And the case for not including O’Connell would be what?

Don’t disagree with you particularly re Henderson’s non-selection although for me he should still be in there ahead of Pope but the reasoning doesn’t stand up when considering OConnells omission.

Personally I’ve no time for the national team but would still like to see our players get the international recognition they deserve regardless of their nationality. I guarantee if he signed for Chelsea (god forbid) he would be called straight into the England squad

I think there’s a case for JOC. If he keeps playing like he has done, it will become hard not to pick him. If he went to Chelsea and did well in the champions league then it would be impossible.

I’lol always have an element of bias to our club, that’s natural but I like to think that I can see things objectively. I can’t understsnd any reason that some of those defenders are selected ahead of O’Connell as of now

Just been told here in Greece that the greek federation are having a serious look at our George. It lookslike my constant bigging him up might be bearing fruit. UTB

I don't think our players should go straight into the XI or anything, (maybe a couple 😉) but if you're picking people like Keane, Heaton, Pope and Mings to sit on the bench, then our players should also be picked.

It's more ceremonial than anything, pat on the back for doing well.

I assume it’s more likely now Greece have a Dutch coach? With George’s grasp of the Greek language probably being basic at best, an English speaking coach will help him settle into the squad.

Another game goes by with pretty much all the player's claims strengthened. One would hope anyway, unless Southgate has a ban on SUFC players being involved!

Dean Henderson called up to replace the injured Tom Heaton.

Also can someone tell me what Mings has done to get called up?

JOC, who plays in everyone’s favourite three-man defence in a modern version of Total Football, is unlikely to be called up to play in Gareth Southgate’s old fashioned, retro-style back four.

Also can someone tell me what Mings has done to get called up?

  • Plays for "Big Club" Villa
  • Nope, that's it.
Maybe you could say he plays in a 4, but so has O'Connell in the past, and I'm sure Mings has played in a 3 in the past.

Most headed clearances in the Premier League this season?

Christ Basham

Half way through the season, 5th place in the league.

5 English players performing regularly at a fine level. 0 caps between them all.

What a pity, hope that changes soon.

As much as the players would I bet love a call up, I'll be delighted if they don't get capped [sorry guys] as we wouldn't be risking injuries.

I want them to get called up, I just don't want them to play.

Call ups are just pats on the back and they deserve them. I'd love for JOC, Bash, Baldock, Hendo and Lunny to be recognised for their efforts.

Southgate can still pick the same old shite to actually play though so we get them back fresh.
