SUFC England hopefuls

I see no point why they've recalled a 33 year old to play third choice keeper. Particularly when they've called up the young up and coming form player recently. Who has continued his sterling form and according to opta is the best English keeper at the moment.

But no, let's continue with car crash pickford as first choice (even the Evertonians don't rate him).

As for the defence, Mings, Stones....meh!

Maybe he launched one at Kane and told him to ‘head the fucking ball’

I've gone past the point of caring about England, despite it being an outrage that at least one of our defensive players hasn't been called up.

Southgate isn't going to bring in many, if any new players after 11 matches in the Premier League, there might be one or two additions but he's not going to make wholesale changes unless a player makes it impossible for him to not be picked.

Mount, Tomori, Hudson-Odoi probably only has around that many PL appearances too.

They play for Chelsea though so they get picked.

Once read some where that they have to pick most of the players from London clubs when playing at Wembley anyway or they don't get a good crowd.

If you think they aren't watching him already your very much mistaken
Look at Maguire, he was class for Hull and Leicester. It was only when he played for England did people really sit up and take notice.

JOC was a hope, but as the kids say, I am properly shooketh that Henderson isn't in there.

Thought it was a given that they'd put the best English keeper in the league in instead of an ageing one who lets goals in every week for Villa.

It's amazing how things change with England with the euphoria of the World Cup and Southgate seemingly being a breath of fresh air picking players on merit and playing decent football to reverting to type as if Hodgson is back in charge.

Who is really calling the shots because on current form, there's no reason why JOC and Hendo shouldn't be in the squad...but they're not and at least get some rest time rather than getting kicked by some donkeys on dodgy pitches somewhere west of Narnia
Ive always thought Southgate was clueless. Even during the world cup when he was adament we would not change formation or tactics regardless of who we were playing or what was happening. 1 nil up against Croatia we were being carved open , did he change it? Did he eck. Imagine what Wilder could do with this group of England players.

He's a pillock, knew as soon as he dropped Loftus-Cheek when Dele Alli was fit again in the world cup. Loftus-Cheek was one of England's best players, Dele Alli hasn't been in form for 3 years.

Players chances of getting called up for England in my opinion, rated highest to lowest;
  • O'Connell
  • Henderson
  • Baldock
  • Lundstram

Totally agree. We get hammered against anyone even half decent. Picking players like Delph is a joke. He was a shite club manager and just because we beat some mediocre teams to reach the semis everyone was fauning over him

Because you’re trying to recreate the team spirit of club sides. You can’t just keep swapping players and dropping them when they have a couple of bad games for their club. A manager has to show some faith in his regular players, whether he’s a club manager or an international one.
And he’s trying to select players who suit his system.

Durham and Bent going through England side. Blades tweeted Durham saying why not JOC. Bent goes through it and concludes he’s unlucky not to get considered.

With the FA though I always get the impression it's an old boys club, who's motto should be " I'll scratch your back if you can afford to scratch mine "......….

If JOC gets picked for England and does well, he’ll be off. Be careful what you wish for.
Agree Bush, other players comments to those around them at their respective clubs and a bit of cash dangling could see us lose anyone.
Must be a proud moment for anyone to pull their countries shirt on though.

Pope gets in ahead of Henderson?

One has conceded 7 in his last 2 games, the other has conceded 1 in his last 4 games.

Did Southgate watch the Burnley game? Pope was awful for the first goal and I'd have been furious if that was Henderson. He spotted Lundstram, moved left in anticipation of him shooting and then stood still and watched it go in, exactly where he moved himself to cover. Terrible goalkeeping.

Out of all of our English players Henderson has the best chance given the number of clean sheets he's kept and his high save percentage.

Southgate is just McLaren mark two. Boring predictable football played by the usual suspects no matter how they are performing for club.

In fairness to Fabio Capello, if you were English and playing well you were in. If you were an England regular and out of form, you were out.

I don't support England or watch them and haven't for decades.

I understand your point, but if players aren't good enough (and there's players that have only played once or twice, so they're hardly mainstays), you should be picked.

Give over, Pope had absolutely no chance with the first goal.

Watch it from 00:18 and just watch Pope. You'll see him look at Lundstram then move left ready for the shot, before Lundstram shoots. He could have dived. I'm not saying he would have saved it, but he didn't even try.

I'm happy to disagree. Debate makes the world more interesting.

The second goal he has absolutely no chance with and he expected the threat to come from Mousset. He was let down by poor defending for the third.

Not for me. Lundstram hit it too hard and too accurately. It looks like he could do better from the first angle because he looks near to it but when you see the replay he’s miles away.

Baldock has zero chance.

RB / RWB is probably England's strongest position. He's not good enough in the final third to be an England player and I'm a massive fan of his.

Basham equally. Zero chance. As much as I love him he's not good enough on the ball and has a mistake in him

(disclaimer - I also think Michael Keane is dreadful right now and have no idea how he was recently called up)

Oconell - if our defensive record keeps up this is the one I could maybe see. Left footed centre halves aren't that common, he's very consistent, good at defending and good on the ball. Also wins a lot of headers during attacking set pieces.

Henderson - the most likely call up. He was brought in after Heatons injury so cpuld probably already he considered 4th choice. If he carries on the way he is he'll be a regaular call up. Whether he actually plays anytime soon though is a different matter.
George would be better off playing for Greece. We have a new coach, John Van’t Schip who has turned the squad on its head. He’s instilled passion and hard work, much like Wilder. I’m rea bigging George up at every opportunity here in the greek sports press. UTB

What is the benefit of calling up a 33 year old to be third choice for two piss easy qualifiers, over the future #1? Is he better at collecting balls in training? Makes a better cuppa? I genuinely want to know Southgate’s thinking behind it.

As for Baldock, unfortunately there’s too many good right-backs ahead of him, so doubt he’ll ever be considered.

Who knows, you could say experience if any England player had every experienced anything good.

Let's get these old gits who've achieved nowt in to show the young lads what it means to play for England.

I get the idea of trying to create a club mentality and I understand developing trust in certain players as you work with them but going about things this way has literally never worked for England. In my lifetime we have never picked a team purely on form. Southgate Is simply following on from Hodgson in initially picking young players in form but then sticking with them no matter what. He will fail in the very same way Hodgson did too

They’re also young players, so ones for the future. They’ve also come through all the England age groups which helps.

Who isn’t performing for England? Last time I checked we’ve hammered our qualifying group.

Baldock needs to score goals or register more assists before he'll be considered. That's why Alexander-Arnold is ahead of him. He's playing well for us but this is missing from his game.
