I enjoyed it last night. Despite it taking 3 hours to get from Leeds to Nottingham, despite the slip road to the M1 northbound being closed meaning an extra portion of the 50 mile an hour zone and despite the result, I had an enjoyable evening watching the Blades.

There was great fight (bit too literally in the case of one lad with the copper) and spirit in the 2nd half along with some decent stuff and anyone who continues to believe the rumours of dressing room unrest is watching a different team to me. Len posted a week or so ago that people are starting to care about United again and I think he's spot on. Alright a lot of it's been negative but everyone seems to be talking about the team again and I'm really hopeful that we're starting to see the beginning of the end of the Robson induced stupor we've been in.

We started incredibly badly last night, it must have been 10 minutes in before one of our players did something right. It was strange to concede so early and think 'that's been coming'. We were all at sea at corners. Yeates was the man on the back stick but kept coming out to stop a short corner leaving us exposed to a deep corner. We lacked a Morgan to organise at set pieces. We improved gradually through the first half but it was impossible not to. Very unusual seeing Ward as an orthodox right back but I guess Blackwell was concerned about Forest's pace down the left.

The second half was largely good and I thought we probably shaded it. The through ball to Quinn in the last seconds was probably the best chance but it needed someone a touch quicker on the end of it.

I know they're all wired for sound but I'm not happy about a ref brandishing a red card for something he hasn't seen without actually going to speak to whoever's told him to send Henderson off. It may well have been a definite red but the way the ref went about it and the way their number 6 went running after him like a whinging little kid in the playground left a sour taste. The ref was appalling all night long.

Cracking atmosphere in the away end in the 2nd half, really enjoyable - hate-filled and passionate, just how it should be.

I'm a bit worried about how much we'll have left in the tank for what is a crucial game on Saturday. It wouldn't be a surprise if Geary, Williamson and Camara are missing as well as Henderson. The 2nd effort must've taken a lot out of the legs and Peterborough will be bouncing after their win last night.

Bunn 8 - Starting to grow (not literally unfortunately for micalijo) as a decent keeper at this level. One of his 2 second half saves was top drawer. Slowly changing my opinion about him.

Geary 5 - Was that the last we'll ever see him of him? He was struggling with his winger to be honest and every time he went to ground he looked like he wouldn't get up. Love him to bits and hope he's back soon, fingers crossed.

Bartley 5.5 - Struggled in the air more than he did on Saturday. Made some great sliding tackles but the suspicion was that he had to make them because he'd been caught a little out of position.

Nosworthy 6 - Great fun to watch him constantly using stepovers and dribbles to get himself out of trouble. It will stop being fun when he inevitably drops a Beesley-sized bollock and costs us a goal. Overall, done well so far.

Kallio n/a - Just can't mark that performance. Truly, truly awful. Summed up nicely in the last minute when a simple pass to him went straight through his legs. More than once he made a mistake and I had no idea whatsoever what he was trying to do. I read people on here slagging Taylor off but, for me, he's streets ahead of Kallio and Stewart.

Ward 6 - Battled away at right back and, by and large, did a good job there. We'll never know how much we missed his attacking presence I guess - would he have got on the end of the through ball in the minute if he'd been up front?

Montgomery 8 - MOTM - Followed up his good performance on Saturday. Typical Monty, broke things up, drove us forward when he could and kept his passing nice and simple.

Williamson 5.5 - Pretty quiet in comparison with his display against Bristol City.

Yeates 5.5 - Like Williamson, didn't hit the heights of Saturday. I'm not sure how much of a willing worker or tackler he is so he's going to have to produce attacking wise to avoid going the way of Cotterill.

Henderson 5 - Wasn't pulling up any trees. Don't know what he did for the red card but it became impossible to defend his indiscretions a long time ago.

Camara 5.5 - Another one who didn't quite live up to his last game although it was incredibly difficult for him due to (a) us being shit early on and (b) playing up front on his own after Henderson went off.

Subs:
Quinn 6.5 - Thought he did well and caused Forest problems. Few moans when he came on again. Can't see people's problem with a lad who always gives 100% and has weighed in with more goals than most in our midfield in recent years.

Evans and Cresswell - not really on for long enough to get a mark. Be interesting to see which one starts on Saturday, might be both if Camara can't manage a 3rd game.

Thanks Coops, good report. Agreed re: the away support, hope it stays that way.

Eh?

He left 2 years ago, there's barely any of the signings he made or the influence he had still at the Lane............any "stupor" we are in NOW, (I prefer to call it slow-sinking shit) is nowt to do with Robson.

I think Williamson and Camara had injections so that's possibly why they weren't up to it. 2nd half performance shows a bit of promise, and in reality we went away with a 4-4-2 formation and only got beat 1-0 by a decent side.

How many Blades were there?

despite the slip road to the M1 northbound being closed meaning an extra portion of the 50 mile an hour zone

I particularly liked the diversion signs (or lack of) which if you listened to, would have you still going around the roundabout now. We ended up taking the road before the M1 North slip road and then following the signs towards Mansfield, didn't take us long to get back on the M1 at the next junction.

See, I too know they are wired, but just why did he send him off and THEN go and have a chat with the linesman. Surely if he knew all he needed to from talking on the headsets, they wouldn't need to get together for a chat afterwards?

Both him and that linesman were diabolical all night. Summed up his consistancy when he booked Cresswell for a carbon copy (though less malicious) of a foul he'd let Forest get away with about 15 seconds before.

Robson's penchant for signing old men on h-u-g-e wages is responsible for many of our current 'problems'.

I'm not sure we're in slow-sinking shit at the moment. They're very small and you have to look hard to see them but I think the green shoots of recovery are poking through. Maybe it's just that the Sheffieldus Unitederium thrives in harsh conditions?

The other thing is, how do the fans in the ground know who has given him the nod? For all we know, Henderson's been sent off by the 4th official.

Those new whistles are good though, very clever how they link them to the noise of the home fans appeals.

i wasnt impressed with Forest at all. 3rd in the league, at home vs ten men the should have hammered us.. As one fan shouted near me, "Cloughy will be turning in his grave watching you lot, you cheating fuckers"

Too right!! Every challenge they rolled about like they'd been shot. Whats with the 1 ball system? Why did every ballboy act like he was going to catch a disease if he ran to get the ball.

Why did Forest not actually attack? Ok they looked dangerous from corners but other than that they were bobbins!

And atmosphere wise, did they sing a song? It took them 20 minutes to realise Earnshaw was been taken off and then the tossers applauded. Really disappointed with the way it turned out last night. Could have taken the game to them with 11 men.

As for Henderson, i didn't see it but the guy next to me said Red card before he pulled it out, said it was blatant elbow.

I like Henderson but with him out now for 4 games (i think) does that mean we can now play some decent football on the floor to feet and have Camara & Evans up top? Probably not, we've got Cresswell.

Two words. Billy Davies.

i'm missin our gert an Patsy ........... the Blades can look after themselves for a while.

1st of all Cooper, top report, it made me smile to read Beesley's name again. Just a couple of points...

Atmosphere - Great to know the atmosphere was "hate filled and passionate" Some people won't really know what that is and immediately assume its a bad thing. If its the same as it was in 2003 when we beat Leeds in the cup sitting (standing) in South Stand H block, standing on John St West back in the 90's - then I don't remember many other atmospheres that are more passionate and hostile. The lane, for me has turned into a family/ Steelers type atmosphere, piped Annies song and that bag of toss dance for the goals. Nothing wrong with any of that but keep it on the family stand and at Sheffield Arena. I don't want to see fighting on the terraces, but getting the passion back and creating a hostile atmosphere gives me goosepimples!

Are the players and the fans getting that bond back again? We seemed to be disconnected for a while back in Oct/ Nov. What with people abusing Quinn and Quinn reacting etc? Theres nothing I like better than seeing a Blade salute the Kop (Cresswell, Morgs, Quinny, Del and Evans do this) and goal celebrations where the players jump into the fans and get mobbed. FIFA and the like have kicked this in to touch a little, but players with preplanned celebrations of arrogance does my head in.

Geary - I didn't expect him to play last night, so it was obviously a step to far for him. I guess he's out Saturday. But it means we need another right back.

Nugsy - Sounds like a top lad, i've heard mixed reviews from mackems, but I can't wait to see him. Plus Coops, your Beesley (spoon boots) comment made me spit tea on the monitor! Beesley was a Legend but dropped some massive baalocks.

Evans and Cresswell - I'd love to see them given a go, we have the pace on the wings, so why not? There are goals in the pair of them, Evans just needs a run not sitting on the bench or being hauled off. Let him play 3 or 4 games on the bounce. Henderson has lost his shirt now and for me could have cost us 3 points. Even though I like him its Tough sh*t, he has to wait now.

Good write up Coops, I agree with pretty much everything you've written.

Was refreshing to see us again try and play football, even when we were under the cosh a bit. I prefer us to play like that and make a fist of it than see us lump it and lose 1-0 and be out of it as soon as the opposition score. The move which ended with Yeates effort in the second half was a joy to behold, I've haven't seen us keep the ball in that manner for a long time.

Henderson is a plank, and whats the number of sendings off he's accumulated for us now? 3? That's just off the top of my head and he's not learning. 3 sendings off in under 2 seasons for violent conduct isn't acceptable - he should be taught a harsh lesson. Plain and simply, the man is costing us points - I felt he had a good first half and fitted into the game plan pretty well with Camara trying to work off him.

Hope it continues anyway, we'll pick up more points playing that way than relying on keeping it tight IMO.

MOM for me was Nyron. Looking excellent at the back.

Only real downside (other than the result) was Blackwells post match interview which I felt was cringeworthy. No need for that at all.

I echo Swiss' sentiments Cooper. Thanks for the report and it is nice to hear about the 'hate filled atmsopher' in the away end ...... jsut sorry those dirty scab got one over on us!? :(

As for Henderson, i didn't see it but the guy next to me said Red card before he pulled it out, said it was blatant elbow.

Were you sat next to me on row F? I said the exact same thing before the ref had even blown for it. The effin idiot!

Is Hendo our most often sent-off striker of all time? If not in terms of numbers, then in terms of red-cards per appearance?

I'm struggling to think of strikers during my era who've gone more than once. Littlejohn? errr....

Anyone else?

>Can't see people's problem with a lad who always gives 100%
we dont want people who give 100 percent.. i'm sick of bloody percenters.. we want a professional standard footballer who can pass and move and stop giving the ball away

>The lane, for me has turned into a family/ Steelers type atmosphere, piped Annies song
yeah i hate it too.. i detest that bit when they play the Annies song intro .. it makes me want to vomit.. WE ARE CAPABLE OF DOING IT OURSELVES THANKS VERY MUCH.. WE DON'T NEED SOME ARS*HOLE TO TELL US WHEN TO DO IT

rant over.. btw cooperblade are you cooperman? (legend) ;-).. some dude on here posts as eskimo.. dunno if he's the 'real' eskimo :-/.. i did ask him once

Nathan Blake got sent off at least twice - against WBA in the league and Udinese in the Anglo Italian, both in 1994-5 - but I don't think he got a 3rd red card.

Glyn Hodges may have gone 3 times (at Hillsborough and at Barnsley are two and I could have sworn there's another dismissal for him) but it's a stretch to call him a striker.

Good calls both. I forgot that Hodges played up front for a while and he was indeed barking mad.

I also remember Alan Cork being sent off for an elbow and have a suspicion that wasn't his only red...

But as it stands, I'm fairly sure Hendo is out in front in the idiot stakes. Sure Darren or Silent could put me right.

Good report but a couple of points:

They were dangerous from corners but everyone they took from the side they scored in the first half, including the goal, was taken from outside the corner arc but of course the officials did nothing about it.

I think you are a bit harsh on Yeates, I thought he looked very sharp and worked hard in the second half in particular and was worth a 6.5/7.

I thought the corners were legal as, although the ball wasn't touching any part of the arc, it was over-hanging it slightly.

Cork went in the game v Blackburn at the Lane on 15/1/94 and I am pretty sure that was his only red.

Carl Bradsaw also went in that game and he also got sent off in the game v Coventry at the Lane on 28/11/92. You could probably call him a striker at a stretch and he was probably similar to Hodges on the barking scale (cf his subsequent conviction for assaulting a taxi driver).

I was wrong - Blake did get a 3rd red card. He was sent off when we lost at Southend in 1995-6, a game notable as the occasion on which pro and anti Bassett fans were scrapping in the crowd. What a miserable day.

So Blake is tied with Hendo, though one of Blake's was in a cup game whereas all Hendo's are in the league.

I think you've missed his crowning glory when he got "sent off" after the game for a top class nutting of Armstrong at Roker Park.

Im sorry but to hang on to that notion is plain nonsense.

Do you think that the transfer policy under Robson has had no bearing on the transfer policy under Blackwell?

We'll never know for certain I suppose whether Blackwell would have still signed the Frances, the Reids and the Stewarts but I strongly believe he wouldn't have to sell some of the players that he has had to if it wasn't for the ridiculous wages paid to a group of players who had no re-sale value and who failed to get us promoted.

We're still paying for Robson/Robinson/McCabe's excess of 2007.

Hodges at Sunderland? He never got a red card for that...just a 6 game ban...
