Yes in the 1st half of the FA Cup replay. Also in the 1-1 draw at the sty in April 1993, just after the Glyn Hodges/John Harkes incident there was a brawl and David Hirst ran onto Mitch Ward's back and Charlie then threw punches at Hirst who then moved away from the brawl quickly.

Got sent off v Man U in the 1995 FA Cup for slapping Cantona's ear just after the Frenchman gave him a sly kick.

Always remember praise and grumble after the match when Hodges got sent off, went something along lines of:

Caller:It's a praise for Glyn Hodges
RS: Glyn Hodges? But he's just been sent off?
Caller: I know, he's fuckin' buuudiful'

I know a lad who played in the team same time as Charlie, in the Bassett era. He told me that before the game Harry would get the players wound up for the match and say things like “go out there an kill em!”. He said Charlie took it literally!😀

Bit of a head-case in his day. I hope the lad is over his troubles now and good on him for showing up and facing up to the music about his regrettable past.

I didn’t know he had been banged up. He was living locally about 15 years ago. About 3 years ago I was in a restaurant somewhere (and I can’t remember now which one but I think it was in this area) and a very nice young lad served us. We got chatting about football and this kid said he supported the Blades. He then told me his Dad was Charlie Hartfield. I said I remembered him well (although I stopped short of saying he was a good player! Because he wasn’t!). I asked if he still lived around Sheffield and he said he’d moved back to London. He didn’t elaborate on why!
 



My son was at nursery with his son Callum. Never met Charlie but his missus used to work in corporate for the Blades and got the wife and our Dan (aged 6 at the time) tickets for Dan’s first game ( Blades v Preston c2000 won 3-2 after being 2-0 down).

Agree with you there. I remember a lad from my college days who was a good lad, polite and respectful albeit of a pig persuasion. I lost touch with him after college (no mobiles in them days) until I picked up the paper about 10 years later to see he had been sent down due to stealing from his employer to feed a gambling addiction.

Ever since I’ve tried not to judge people by their circumstances
 
According to Beesley Bassett sent Charlie to cause chaos with the high flying pigs on arrival at the Lane, reckons blood was spilt and his mission was succesful. Must have worked we won 2-0.
 
I liked Charlie . Hard as nails but also a much better footballer than many gave him credit for .

I remember one season when we were doing badly he was brought back into the team and was hugely influential in us going on a great run of results , without getting the acknowledgement he deserved .

As for the sending off , he's not the only one who would have reacted in the way he did after that nasty sly kick he got from Cantona . Great footballer though he was , he went down in my estimation that day .

I remember that game really well. I got a three match ticket and all three were great and we ended up getting a half season ticket on the back of it and then I’ve had a season ticket ever since. I’d had one before but then moved away and when I came back went when I could afford it/be bothered, but that got the bug back and I’ve been ever present since

There was a little run of games where he was really good. Tough in the tackle decent distribution (for a Bassett team) I think he played in the 0-2 away at Forest when we sent them down and I really thought we had the making of a good team with him a part of it at that point. . . Forest were shit though and might have made us look particularly good! He’s another that played for us and stuck in the area. I think we are a bit unique for players staying on after their time, partly because it was maybe their peak but also because we’r A good club and it’s a nice place to settle. I like that. Gayle, Tracey, Asaba, Page stuck around but I think his work might have taken him elesewhere, Kenny, Beesley, Gannon .... I’m sure there are more but I might have had a beer or six and can’t recall ....
 
I think I missed Hartfield's only goal for us due to arriving at the ground late. Did he get one early in a win?

Remember that game because even after 10 minutes when we were 2-0 down i was convinced we’d win. No idea why?

That was the when Satdi comes game , i thought the second half would be delayed because Sean B.ean , could not find the net , Hartfield may have cost us that game being old mann..ed by a clever Frog .🐸🇫🇷🐸🇫🇷🐸🇫🇷
