A point about Duffy (and our AM role)

Where did Southampton come from, we were talking about Watford? The way some of our fans are in awe of shitty teams like Watford astounds me in equal measures. They were there for the taking but we didn't capitalise due to giving them too much respect. If our target this year is to scrap for a draw against rubbish like this and be plucky losers to the rest then our prospects have suddenly been reduced to zero. However I doubt Wilder and co share your opinion and we can look forward to a bit better than that performance.
Shitty teams like Watford ?
Established premier League team that got to a cup final
They're substitute wingers were delefeou and 40 million pound sarr
Have a word with yourself soft lad

They were fucking garbage. They've let in 14 goals vs Man City last two games against them. Lets see how many other "established" PL teams manage that this season. Have a word with yourself when you've stopped playing with yourself soft lad.

We are not man city and they changed their formation and system against us

If I'm replying to one of your posts I don't have to think very much which thankfully comes in handy on a Sunday morning. Go and find another argument with someone else, you're doing well last couple of days. I couldn't be arsed with a tosser like you.

There's a lot of dissing of the Tuftyball 3-4-1-2 system on this thread saying it won't work yet we haven't started a Premiership game with it this season.

Thats the formation that got us promoted that allows our centre and wing backs to get forward quicker and enables us to get down the channels of the opposition. The flat midfield three has served to bed us into the start of the season. Yet against Bournemouth, Palace, Leicester when we got back to 1-1 until the Barnes goal and Chelsea away when we pushed Freeman further forward second half we created more problems for the opposition defence when we went to 3-4-1-2.

Teams have already worked out how to play against the flat three. Watford yesterday changed their formation and got 8 men behind the ball pushing us out wide all the time hoping to capitalise on our mistakes which they nearly did. For the first time this season we had more of the possession against a team determined to stifle us yet inexplicably we didn't bring a number 10 on to get the ball forward quicker and created nothing.

We need to win our Home games. Yes there are problems with 3-4-1-2 if we let teams run at us but lets at least try it from the off we may surprise ourselves. It is the formation the majority of the players are most familiar and have been successful with.

Can’t see much changing for Arsenal no matter what we say on here. Similar set up and tactics to the Liverpool game. Likely therefore that McBurnie and Robinson up top again with Mousset from the bench.
If we’re losing come sixty minutes we may see something different then but he’s not going to give Arsenal’s attacking players loads of space to run into

It wasn’t entirely the formation that got us promoted though. We played with a flat three last season too, particularly in the latter part of the season.

If Wilder changes the formation and we get battered, the players may start to doubt him, worse they may start to lose confidence in their own ability and their teammates. At some point I think we’ll pull the trigger and go for it but I suspect CWAK have divided the season into segments with specific goals and targets for each segment, the first being don’t take a battering and get some points on the board.

We just need to be patient. Wilder will change things when he’s confident to do so, he’s new to this league too. Our players will improve through hard work and good coaching but it won’t happen overnight. Thirty games to play and we’re known for our ‘slow starts’.

we know under wilder no attacking midfielder & we struggle. it why we were toothless without duffy in 2017. when Mcgoldrick returns we will be far better attacking wise

Struggling in 12 th in the premier League

Duffy wouldn't play if he was here.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Duffy and he was a huge part of our rise. I would have liked to see him get a chance at this level but he only has himself to blame really despite our preferred system at present.

He had no right to expect another year to be granted to him at his age with no PL experience. He will have been financially rewarded along the way.

His wife's social media comments and now his Dad's petty name calling of Wilder on FB aren't going to help matters really, and you'd hope Duffy would be peed off about. If he isn't then that suggests he's part of the problem.

It's a shame it's gone this way but I don't have much sympathy.

struggle to score we might have the 4th best defence but 4th worst attack. we might be 12th but we are only 1 defeat from trouble. when you think we have Arsenal, West Ham, Spurs & Man Utd in 4 of next 5 games. you have to get wins in games like yesterday. & we are only on for 41pts projected

So when you said we were struggling you meant we might be struggling if we lose more games than we have ?

Because we're not playing the same system, if we were then I guarantee he would force his way back in like he always did when Wilder dropped him. His age means nothing, we miss his creativity. The same goes for Sharp, Wilder would drop him then have no choice but to put him back in.

Forgive and forget, get him back in January and let him and Freeman battle it out for the no.10 position. Sacrifice Lundstram, at least against the weaker teams.

Duffy as good as he was for us in The Championship he’s not as good as Freeman at this level.
He’s not even getting a game for Stoke, apart from U23s at Leek Town.
Shall we get Jose Baxter back as well, don’t think he’s getting a game either😂

Basically:

1. If you're saying "we need Duffy back" you're basically saying we need to change the system.
2. If you want to change the system, you play Luke Freeman, who was bought to play that role.
3. If Freeman is sh*te in that role, you can say we need Duffy back. Although you might enrage the Ravel Morrison fan club.

If we continue to play the flat 3 especially at home then we will never be hammered but we will be relegated.

we are projected for 42pts. which has us 13th - 16th depending on the season. but it going to be worrying im thinking off that Barnsley game in 1st season back. wilder was resting duffy. but who knows as that relationship is enigma if ever was one. but it so toothless that he had to bring on duffy on after 26? mins

In the unlikely event that Duffy returns to the Lane, he will be transfer listed with a for sale sign around his neck. I know he has fans on here, but given his age, lack of premier experience and current lack of status at Stoke, i just don't see it.
He has burned his bridges here with Wilder, so don't expect him back to play football any time soon.
As others have pointed out, a combination of Didsy, Sharp, Mousett, McBurnie and Luke Freeman are more realistic, current options. options

If a team like Watford sits back and allows us possession , to the extent that we had 67% in a first half we utterly dominated , the we have to have a method of unlocking them - if it's not someone playing the Duffy role , can anyone tell me how we're going to do it ?
Long balls to the skinny bearded guy who gets outjumpted + outmuscled by big defenders all day long because he is NOT a targetman + cannot hold the ball up ?
Something is clearly wrong with our ability to get through defences.
CW was VERY prickly on this subject when asked a very gentle question by RS.
My take on that is that it is a BIG WORRY to him.
And the Prince might not be trusting him with another £17m if McBurnie is how he spunks that kind of munneh.

Serious question because I don't know the answer, what is his role and what are his strengths?

McBurnie ? I don't really know. He doesn't win regularly in the air or on the ground against athletic Prem CBs. He doesn't hold the ball up too well with his back to goal. Most of that is down to his lightweight physique.
He doesn't run the channels with any pace , nor does he ride tackles like the Moose.
He's got a big bushy beard though.

In League One James Hanson helped us and in the Championship Gary Madine did the same. I don't think we anticipated that we'd be playing teams who parked the bus against us in the Premiership, but I think we hoped McBurnie would be able to offer a bit of the same. He lacks the presence and strength of the other two though.

I think Wilder will keep assessing if we can afford playing a number 10 in some games, and may even regret now that he didn't try it at Watford. We've got to remember that it would have meant taking off Lundstram, whose run and through ball set up Mousset for his goal against Everton. I think we hoped we could achieve something like that again, without sacrificing the solidity that the socalled flat three has given us.

When people are advocating a number 10/Duffy role behind two strikers with the reasoning that we may create more, I think nobody really disagrees. The relevant question is if we'd be able to cope defensively against opposition teams that offer far more than what we faced last season.

He seems to win a lot of headers in our own box. I think he's an all rounder who would benefit from working on his strength. He struggled against big centre halves who gave him little room on Saturday. I think it's ok saying that he should be doing better, but far too soon to write him off.
