First it seemed like JOC just mistakenly thought Henderson was mopping it up. 2nd Egan slips when turning. 3rd, if I’m being generous, are we trying badly to play offside? Regardless they’re all errors on our part. Odd because outside of those the defence was very solid.

They would all have been awful goals to give away for sure. I just think the first was a lack of communication which isn't usual for us. The 2nd was a slip but we also shouldn't have been so far up with the pace of their forwards. That said it was the only time it happened all game and they were clearly playing all game for that sort of break. The 3rd was poor organisation which in the last minute of a game is indefensible really.
 
If you were at the game today (yesterday) then you'd feel we'd overall bossed the play.

However, we didn't create a single meaningful chance whilst they missed 2/3 sitters.

Theres lots to be happy and positive about in general but our lack of cutting edge at the top end of the pitch is becoming a concern imho.

Agree. It’s not really an issue with finishing, it’s an issue creating chances. That’s what I worry about. Think we need to start bringing Freeman on in games like this if we want to create chances. It’s not an issue with Fleck, but we looked more dangerous going forward when Freeman was filling in for him or with McGoldrick playing as the second forward to link play up. Ironically, we created more chances in the Southampton match when McGoldrick missed all those sitters than we have in all the other matches put together since then.

Can we have a whip round and get some studs for Egan's boots before it costs us a goal?

We should have subbed Basham, who was wayward and erratic yesterday, put Baldock to right back and bring Freeman on in midfield to add more goal threat going forwards.

By the time we get around to the next game we should have McGoldrick back. That will improve us, providing we don't play him upfront as a striker, but instead put him in the number 10 role. As for the front pairing...Mousset and Sharp. At least we could give it a go. Can't be much worse than the lightweight/homeless combo we had yesterday.
 
the 3rd chance is frustrating because it seems like JOC had switched off and was playing Dawson on side. Same happened against Liverpool when they tried to walk it in and Mane hit the post. 3 of our defenders all in a line with JOC 2 yards nearer the goal playing everyone onside.

Needs to keep focussed and keep in line.

been let off twice so far so hopefully that's something we'll improve on otherwise we could be conceding from them.

Very good cross, well timed run, hard to defend.

Quite a high defensive line and a slightly later runner can get there onside.

Keeper should claim the cross?
 



Dont think anyone should moan and knit pick about the defence. mistakes happen even to the best

The mistake was in the allowing the runner in the channel to get the ball. O’Connell came to a complete stop till realising Henderson wasn’t going to come for it, and we were then exposed at the back recovering as a result – leading to the unmarked chance for Gray.

Just studied it again. I know what you mean but Dawson lands right on the six yard line after he headed it.

The first chance it was Stevens who watched the ball run for Henderson, O'Connell was well upfield. I don't think it was Henderson's ball to mop up actually. Gray stupidly offside anyway, basic. Stevens closest to get back at it.

Welbeck's chance was a sitter and he completely lost his bottle and tamely shot very close to Henderson. Egan mistake but no depth of cover whatsoever. Stevens closest to catch Welbeck.

Do you think it might be partly down to Watford keeping so many players behind the ball? I didn’t go but from what I’ve seen there didn’t look a lot of space in and around the box.

That's how I saw it Bushblade we do need more creativity but even Man City struggle to break teams down who play so defensively.
Of course unless you score 5 in first 20 minutes.

That and the mirroring of formation. Our usual overloads barely happened.

Even though they were basically rubbish and negative, I think their tactics were justified on the balance of chance creation.

I stand corrected, was the opposite corner to where I was sat so tricky to see at the time. With that clarified, I thought O’Connell was the pick of the defence yesterday – right in front of me second half I got a decent view of some very intelligent interceptions to snuff out possible danger.

Benitez like tactics from their Spanish manager. Not surprising I suppose until you consider it’s against us, a newly promoted side.

That chance for Robinson was a good opportunity , could well score 5/10 with that one.

To create it we had a midfielder, Lunny, up supporting in the box, then McB. provided a wonderful assist.

I think he was aware of what we could do & I think that he was just looking to create a beachhead to re-build the season on. 'Clean sheet and a point and let's push on from here' mentality. I think they'll have enough quality to be safe.

Really? We had 0.4 xG in the whole game. Some people hugely overestimate how good chances actually are
