The cups genuinely don't matter this year but it's disappointing that we didn't have a single young player in the squad tonight for a nothing match.
The one disappointment of Wilder's reign has been no-one's come through from the youth ranks or looks likely to come through from the youth ranks.

David Brooks!

We have accelerated from the first division to the championship too quickly and subsequently left our youth behind, it will take two years or so before we have a player ready to step up as those of the right age will at best only make championship footballers.
I expect the first youth to make the step up to be RND.

A few of them are out on loan. It's RND who I would have liked to see play tonight for us.

Whiteman captain and main man at Donny.

Reed established in an improving Posh.

Brooks out injured but easily worth £50m.

Adams £15m in P.L.

In a transition situation there are always such happenings. So much turnover of players, squad balancing, needs at that particular time. Pressure!

I would personally have preferred to see Gribbin and Clarke upfront tonight. It would have been a complete reserve 11 then and given a reason to go to the game, to actually see what these players look like.

I mean, it’s win win. I want us to go out of the cup as early as possible to be honest. Focus on the league. But imagine if Gribbin had done a brooks and grabbed the game by the neck and scored a hat trick, we’d have had an extra option in mind going forward. Putting Clarke on the bench is a bit of a waste of time because we all know what he is as a player. We aren’t going to learn anything from seeing him come on at 65 minutes. If Mousset has have been injured tonight and we started him instead of Gribbin or another fringe player, we would have been rightly moaning now.

Have you seen Gribbin play? Young players have to show to get a chance.just cus he's a man utd cast off doesn't give him any rights.
Love to see young blades make there mark Wilder will feel the same .
He's only just signed on !.

All those players were already here I think when Wilder arrived and Brooks and Adams were acquired from elsewhere.
I just think Sheffield is a big enough city to always be producing young players with real potential and for one reason or another that's not really happened since Maguire and to a lesser degree Calvert-Lewin. Can't think of any others.

It's almost 2020 and we still haven't had a player born this century play for us.

He gave Ramsdale, Brooks and Slater their debuts.
The changing of personnel at the academy would suggest that he was not happy with it.

The Sunderland game would have been a good run out for Tyler Smith

You do what's best for the squad and that's giving a run out to players on the brink of making a league appearance. Whether that includes youth players or not is only a question of their talent. They'll get a chance when they earn it.

Every single player who made a league appearance last season had been signed from another club. I think that is probably unique in our history.

Sharp is of course a youth product, but he is on his third spell with us.

Who
Which 18/19 year old do you suggest should have played for us, why and who in favour of?
I'm not saying we have got any who should be playing, just pointing out the lack of young players coming through. It isn't a big issue, Wilder is doing a fantastic job with the players we have.

Even if we had players coming through, the ones that are decent would be out on loan (as they are now), so there'd have been no hope anyway. The only clubs that play youngsters are the top tier prems and that's cos they have about 100 on their bloody books lol.

How many times have you watched Gribbin?
EddieColquhoun I know that question wasn't to me. I've seen his four appearances for the U23s.
1. I liked the look of him in some of those games.
2. But, I thought he was anonymous at Birmingham on Monday.
3. Like all of the current "at home" U23 squad, my view is he is miles off a first team spot.
4. Indeed, I'd put him behind Reece York.
5. Maybe, if Wilder wants to piss around with the Cup Squad so much, it wouldn't hurt to have one or two U23s on the bench. We're hoping/expecting to lose anyway. But, obvs that's not going to happen.

I think Gribbin is a shot for nothing, reasonably intelligent signing.

I’ve never seen him play. That’s why I wanted to see him play last night. I know the chances of him scoring a hat trick against Sunderland are slim to none, but if he had a fantastic game it would be encouraging for both him and us. It’s a free hit. I’d rather see him play than someone lined up to play in the Liverpool game.

and a simple internet search would've told you all that (he's playing for Bristol Rovers).
Having a genuine interest in our youth team rather than pretending to would have told them that.

The players considered ‘most likely to’ are out on loan, as Phil has mentioned more than once in his reports we have a ‘young’ u23s.

We also have a number of players that have had very little game time so far this season, including several new signings. Last night was about giving them game time (without risking injury).

I don’t like losing any game and I don’t like us being beaten by a L1 team under any circumstances but I get Wilder’s view on this and as he seems to know what he’s doing, I’ll take it on the chin and accept it.

I’m well aware of that it would have been a good run out for him if he was here playing for u23s.
