Agree, Bla blade's wife may well have a more reasonable approach to why we support teams and players.

Many years ago, no, decades even, England had a player called Nobby Stiles who helped us win, for the only time ever, the World Cup.
Although effective as what might be called a 'stopper', Stiles was a dirty, sometimes cheating, player. It takes all sorts to help a side become complete and able to compete. I was never a fan of Stiles, but old Nobby could challenge with the best, or worst, of 'em. Regarding Maddison, he's your typical modern young player in that he has the currently fashionable hair style, probably drives a car(s) worth tens of thousands, and probably has a partner equipped with all the attributes that some of us consider essential in a female of 'worth'. I also think that Maddison happens to be a clever player, and we're not blessed with too many of them I'm afraid. So it's in for me, even though he dives or throws a strop.
