Get in Leon's in the squad

Of course you'd do exactly that in your job if your manager told you to fuck off.
Sorry that this is so hard to imagine but if I was unwanted and it’s being fuckin blasted out into the fuckin public that I’m not wanted I’m not hanging about. 🤷‍♂️

This is quite simply a case of Leon being on the books, we are contractually obliged to pay him and we a squad place available.
Leon won’t get anywhere near the first team unless we have a massive injury crisis. Wilder would look a right tit if he had Leon on the books, a spare squad number, an injury crisis and he was unable to use him. He is just covering his ass, nothing deeper than that
Think your wrong there he will be up for it in training and if Wilder thinks he can do a job from the bench or even starting I'm sure he will use him.
That's what makes Wilder different he wont write anybody off if they have something to give.

Ay.

He’s been 100% brilliant 100% of the time 😉.

Have any of our players?

John Lundstram, arguably our best player and almost certainly the most consistent over the first 4 games.

George Baldock, another who people wanted dropping.

Ollie Norwood, terrible in the cup game the other day.

Really don't know what he's done to you.

In the eyes of the masses, yes Leon gets close to those sort of numbers.

Oh, and it’s called sarcasm 😀.

Fair point about the wages, but I think we were a tad silly giving him the new contract in January 2018. He’s done nowt since he signed that.
I think we had to give him a new contract as Villa wanted him. Of course, we could have just sold him to Villa.

If any club had come in and were willing to take him off our books then Wilder would’ve sold him. Nobody did so we are ‘stuck ‘ with him. If suddenly in training he shows that he is a premier league player above our current 5 then of course Wilder will use him but really can’t see that happening

So if you was getting paid £20k pw for doing nothing, guaranteed for another year, you'd give it up so you could relocate to Wigan or somewhere equally shitty for a fraction of that? Yeah sure you would. Regarding his performance, that went south a long time ago and old father time will ensure that ain't going to change any time now or in the future. The club should do the decent thing and pay him off if he's not going to feature again; putting him in the squad like that is just a facade.

Depends, if he’s offered a 3 year deal on £7k a week (number plucked out of the air for illustration) and it’s local-ish, he stays fit, plays and enjoys football he’s not going to be that much worse off than staying for another year at £20k and paying a shitload of tax.

If he can stay for another season on £20k and then get a 2 or 3 year deal on a decent amount then I understand why he might.

Listening to and reading various things about the lower leagues it seems like even a 3 year contract with a club might not be worth the paper it’s written on though so I can see why he’s looking after no.1.

He shouldn’t get in the match day squad this season though barring an injury crisis.

Or a flash recurrence of blindspotitis 😉.

Any of the real numbers people will put you right on this but I assume most people who have wages on the high end of the scale don't pay as much tax as you'd think. Offshore company HQs and being paid into companies which pay dividends as opposed to wages being 2 such ways of avoiding the higher tax bands.

You'd be an employers dream. Lets abolish every labour law since the Tolpuddle Martyrs. Be interesting to know how you'd plan to pay the mortgage and the rest of the bills every time you upped sticks when your boss decided to shit on you.

Don’t think footballers are allowed to do that with wages. Outside earnings, image rights yes.

Fully aware of how tax works and I’m sure he doesn’t pay by the letter of HMRC and has financial advice to help him pay as little as possible. The fact remains that however he declares his income he’ll be paying a lot more tax if he earns £20k a week than if he earns half that amount.

Nice in theory but there isn't going to be any lower league club going to commit themselves to paying £7k pw for 3 years for an over the hill 34 y.o.

I could think of one club that might have done once upon a time but they're not in the lower leagues any more!!!

Agreed but any less than that and I didn’t really have a point 😂

I was shocked to find people at a company I was working for were able to pay themselves dividends (also I'd never come across it before).

No if he only pays 20% on the lot it doesn't matter if he earns it over 1 or 3 years he'll still only pay the same tax.

Only shareholders can be paid dividends and then only out of profits. Doesn’t apply to footballers as they are employees of the football club.

Highest rate tax is currently 45% on earnings over £150k per annum.

No he won’t due to in year allowances and it’s not possible to earn that much and pay only 20% on the lot unless he’s got a legal loophole that no one else knows about. I own a business that pays me dividends and am also a qualified accountant. Quite well versed in tax rules.

I'd dispute several parts of this statement:
To support Ched Evans you don't need to be a 'Chedmaniac'.
I'd say Evans was a better option than both Hogan and Washington who both got game time last season and that didn't foretell of a bad season.
Evans had sacrificed himself by playing through injury and therefore could've been considered to have earned a chance.
However that he did not get game time leads me to believe that this was not a Wilder signing and I had previously taken the manger at his word that he was.

Agreed. Ched was scoring goals for Fleetwood by the time we got Hogan in.

I shall bow to both your superior knowledges on this then but I was employed by a company who was partaking in a scheme whereby the contractors never paid more than 20% tax and had their NI contributions paid for by the government.

edit: which is where this idea (that most better off people do it) came from.

It sounds like the contractors were taxed on the Construction Industry Rules. 20% tax on all CIS deemed earnings or 30% if not CIS verified.

This is not their final tax bill, which would be calculated on the figures submitted on their self assessment return. Where, subject to earnings, they would pay both Class 2 and Class 4 NIC. (As opposed to Class 1 for employees).

That’s because they’re contractors, not employees. I’m not a qualified accountant (unless you count my AAT basic certificate) but I’m self employed and I could set up a company and pay myself a wage or dividends but I’m a sole trader and basically can’t be arsed. My mate who does the same as me but employs a couple of staff does it and did do since he started off on his own.

I’m guessing that’s what the contractors do although HMRC are always trying to prevent people who are in long term contracts from being a company. When I was self employed thirty years ago they were very strict on sub-contracting if you did regular work for one company, which I did and had to take on a couple more clients so it was all above board.

Does he? He did well for us in League 1 and well in out first year in the Championship, but didn't do much or anything to us then getting promoted to the Prem. With the options we now have, I can't see him getting much game time beyond the cups
I will think you will find he scored some crucial goals for us early on in the season, Brentford away springs to mind

I think we had to give him a new contract as Villa wanted him. Of course, we could have just sold him to Villa.

Or just kept him on his previous contract and told Villa he wasn't for sale? There was always the risk he would be unhappy and his form drop off, but that happened when he got his new contract anyway!

That’s a hindsight answer. If you refuse a player the opportunity to move to a club and earn more money and don’t give them a new contract 99% of the time it bites you on the arse. Wilder knows it, that’s why he gave him a new contract.

Every club has players that haven’t worked out and they can’t get rid of, every club has players that can no longer command a first team place but won’t leave because they won’t get a better contract, it’s just part of football. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter to us because we’ve got promoted. That’s the big picture. It’s not a problem, we’ve bought in all the players Wilder wanted, who were prepared to come to us so it hasn’t hampered us financially.

I agree there is an element of highlight, but surely we could have predicted that a 34 year old Leon Clarke was probably going to be struggling to have a big impact at Championship level, but that's in the past.

As has been pointed out, clubs have to honour contracts and I have no issue with players seeing out their current deal without kicking a ball, but I think it's got to work both ways. A club should be able to reject a bid for a player and not have to offer enhanced terms to prevent him sulking, but I suppose it's human nature and most players will react negatively in that situation.

I think Leon could still do a job in the championship. He was OK last season, caused Leeds a bit of bother towards the end. I’m surprised no one came in for him. I suppose the thinking at the time was that this season, had we been in the championship, we’d have signed his replacement and phased him out slowly, having him as a back up or impact sub as his contract ran out.

I specialise in this and act for clubs and players who have fallen foul of dodgy tax planning - which of course is what caused the downfall of Rangers and directly resulted in the hated Loan Charge.

HMRC have clamped down massively on the many abuses of the tax system that were widespread in football and there is now little that can be done beyond Image Rights payments, which are treated as capital rather than earnings. But even those have to be in line with the true commercial value of a player’s image these days, so nowhere near the gravy train it once was except for really big names. These days the vast majority of players pay Income Tax on practically all of their earnings, so a hell of a lot at the 45% rate.

Will only make bench if we have a mass of injuries. Slow, lazy and not a chance against prem defenders. Greedy footballer (and i use that term loosely) who needs to find himself a Lg1/championship club in Jan. Go away.....

Marsellus Wallace is a strange name for a cat, eh Dronnie?
