The Carrier Bag Firm are on the way down to QPRs (& Imperial College) training ground out in Harlington. For this afternoon's 1pm kick off v SUFC U23s. Although new U23 Lead Coach, Andrew Hughes, was in the dugout last week, this is his first game since his appointment was officially announced.

Team news. Goal news. Beer news on my Twitter

Very interesting to see us giving Gribbin a trial. Sounded like Man U had him as a lock for the first team picture before his injury problems. I remember reading he was rumoured to be retiring after his release so it's nice to see him giving it another go.

Just found this - thanks as ever Ball_Sup (Phil)

Bit gutted this was on the Bank Holiday given that my route to work takes me past the QPR training ground twice a day. Would have been a good excuse to leave early.

Right. The Carrier Bag Firm have just come off the back of six games in six days covering The Ashes, Yorkshire in the T20, two United home games & one U23 away game. So, apologies, Blogs have been delayed. But, I have finally published my Blog from the 4-3 defeat away to QPR U23 on Monday. You'll want to read it.....
New U23 Coaches, Travis Binnion's cricket averages, three ex Manchester United WonderKids on show, two of them scored, but the Man of the Match came from Guiseley AFC's Academy, an argument with the QPR CBF about how many games they've been to, I've broken the Code Of Silence & describe an Old CBF Trick of the Trade.

And finally, one of my all time favourite football chants from the Heathrow Environs Non-League. Pub n Beer an' all. Get at it........

Ale, football, sunshine and out of work early? Would have been a challenge but sure I'd have been up for it 😆
Fingers crossed for a cup draw there.
You know that U23 game was at the Harlington Training Ground, not Loftus Rd.....

Thanks for this Phil, inspired me to go and watch the youngsters. Sounds like they may be entertaining. I'd would ike your opinion in a sort of philosophical question. If we play with three at the back like what we tend to do and we do it all the way through the various age groups and development squads - do we only choose e.e Manure's and other's cast offs who we feel will fit - or do we choose lads who we think have the potential to be moulded - or just take promising youngsters full stop?

Another good read Phil, thank you. Is Harlington the village due to disappear beneath the new Heathrow runway?

No, Harlington will survive while Sipson and Harmondsworth will fall under the bulldozers. The QPR/Imperial College grounds are the green under the Sipson banner in the map below and they look to be spared; although there are plans to put a huge new car park around there somewhere.

Obvs I don't know the "Club's Answer" to that. And obvs we've just appointed a new head of the Academy & a new U23 Lead Coach. And, they may want to do things differently. But, I think there's some common sense you can apply here. The U23s do indeed mirror the first team with 3CBs & wingbacks. But the U18s don't. If Del Geary wants them that way & he's got the players he will. But more often than not, the U18s go conventional four. And, at 18s and two threes, we would ROUTINELY play players in different positions, uncomfortable positions, to see how they get on. Attacking midfielders or strikers like Stephen Mallon & Jake Kelly will pop us as wingbacks sometimes. Holding or box to box midfielders like Jordan Doherty will be used as centre backs sometimes. Centre Backs like Sam Graham & Keenan Ferguson will sometimes play full back in a conventional four. You may know Ben Whiteman as a midfielder when he broke into our first team & at Doncaster. But he often played CB for our U23. I'm making the point that it's DEVELOPMENT FOOTBALL. We're trying to produce players not positions. I doubt we're recruiting to fit a system. I'm more certain we're recruiting players who we think can play. I always say - I can generally tell what Hops have been used in a Double IPA & who has played well in a particular game. But, spotting who has POTENTIAL is the Gold Dust. That's what we pay recruiters & scouts for.
"Will he make it Phil?"
"F*** Knows ..."

I have recently spoken to a guy who works on our recruitment in the South East. One (but only one) of the things he does is watch Cat 1 Academy games. His nose to the ground & nouse & contacts help him identify who might be released & whether we might grab them. Some of it is simple. Sammy Ompreon was at Chelsea & rather small & slight. At that time, Chelsea's Academy didn't like small & slight. But "we" knew he had potential & we knew he'd grow. He's now a regular starter for our U23s.

Is that helping WalkelyFan ? (You'd enjoy the games if you could get to them)

Very much so. I used to watch the youngsters a lot - when they played at Chesterfield a few years ago. I saw Kyle Naughton down the left as a winger and down the right as an overlapping full back in consecutive games. I remember Quinny and Law playing together in midfield and running rings around an established Blackburn reserve midfield managed by Glynn Hodges. I thought they had a real future - shows how much I know. I can get to the games - I just need to do more. I do need a seat though is my problem.

I think it sounds very much as if it makes sense. Thanks for your wisdom.

The U23s play home matches at Bramall Lane & Chesterfield this season.
