This marked the end of Harry's reign,we lost the first 5 on the trot, and when we lost at home to Huddersfield on Dec 9th,it was sadly the end of a great era,but13 defeats from 21 games and it was time for a change
Howard Kendall took over and only lost 3 games to the end of the season, even tho we sold Nathan Blake to Bolton for £1.2m...we won 9 of the last 14 games but the poor start ruined any chance of the playoffs, which of course we did reach the season after

Watford away Aug 12th..lost 2-1

Barnsley away Sept 17th..attendance only 7150..drew2-2

We were absolutely dire in Bassett's final months. Dire team and dire atmosphere in 3-sided ground. Was a sad way for Bassett's reign to end. BTW I think the Barnsley game was live on Yorkshire TV so that as well as our dire form would help explain the low crowd.

That season was also notable as we played in our worst home kit of all time (diamonds) AND our worst away kit of all time (yellow and purple halves). Some achievement given the competition over the years.

I thought that kit was a belter... mind you I was 4 and it was the 90s!

Howard Kendall I remember being super excited he was the manager and he brought some absolute quality to the side over his time here.

Unfortunately as so often with the Blades it proved another false dawn!

We live in hope.

Not sure it was a false dawn, we made the PO Final the year after, signed some cracking players and played some great stuff. The only false dawn was when Kendall left for Everton.

That didn't stop us as we were fantastic in the first half of the following season under Spackman. The loss of Deane, Fjortoft and Whitehouse after already losing McGrath was what ripped the heart out of that season.

The black pearl of inchicore , pity we didn't have him early , or longer ,
the knees and the ale took its toll all to early though :(
I thought Spackman along with Porterfield are underrated managers in our history .

Didn't know the undertones followed the Blades to Watford ,
Fucking seats at Barnsley , stand on away end in pissing rain with no roof , having the inbreds jeer ya from the side bit , then get bricked on the way home on't train , that's the Kes fuckers I remember , had my first scrap at a match in the bus station going to train , twats .

The sad thing was that Lord God Dave Bassett was never given enough funds to keep us in the top league, even had to pay for Brian Gayle his sen at one point, had his best players sold under him and then as he was working under less and less help from our shit board under McDonald and Green... as soon as Dave parts, MacDonald gave millions for Kendall to spend. Kendall spent reasonably wisely for a while but it was a shame the money was there all the time, just not for Dave it seems.

Green was a twat of the highest order.

I thought Spackman was poor considering the players he had at his disposal.

Think i watched these highlights on loop about 50 times as a nipper. First first time I had seen a Sheffield United team pass the ball.

'Arsenal can't win it without the ball'

Vid of the goal which is inexplicably missing from the above highlights.....

Watching that reminds me of what an achievement it was to get them passing the ball. Many of them were signed for how far they could kick the ball and look a little uncomfortable trying to keep it on the floor.

Brilliant memories!

That Spackman team was unstoppable and we haven't recreated it since. Remember Oxford away two nil up in first quarter of an hour... happy days

I had a lousy 1995-6. I didn't see that many games as I'd started working in London, but when I did go we never seemed to win. the first game I saw us win was the Cup game against Arsenal, and I think I only saw 2 more wins, the 3-0 win at Reading and the win at home to Barnsley, out of about 18 games.

Worst game was the 2-1 defeat at Southend, when Blake got sent off and United fans were fighting amongst themselves after people started chanting for Bassett to go. That was awful. Both Arsenal games were the best I saw.

One other thing that sticks in the mind was Kendall's first game as manager at Ipswich - one week in charge and he'd completely changed our style of play. This has been discussed before here. It was amazing.

I took a mate of mine from school to that game. Being the only Unitedite in my area I was hoping he'd become a regular to go to matches with. After that shit show I didn't convince him to go again for another eight years.

can anyone help, as we found this picture of me as a kid from the 1995/96 season, trying to figure out this utd player. annoyingly i recognise the face but cant place the name.
