Blackwell was marginally a more likeable a character than Nigel Clough.. but not by much.

And as for his judgement in footballers Froze Billy Sharp out of the club so we had to rely on Craig Beattie in a Championship play off final.

I know we lost Beattie and had to rely on crap Beattie and Darius "Elbows" Henderson, but there was some talent in that squad not utilised properly - Nathan Dyer, David Cotterill, Brian Howard etc. could have made for an attractive style, but alas 'twas not to be!
Culminated in a very impotent display in the Play-Off final.

P.s. who is Aymen Tahar - he's listed in the squad for this season and I've no recollection! Apparently an Anglo-Algerian born in Sheff and came through the youth set-up

I do remember though that David Cotteril was generally sub and when ever he came on late in the game he was almost always a big threat.
However I remember that whenever he started he was no where near as good, still decent though,

Think Blackwell explained the reason why Coutts was dropped to the bench. He explained that going forward Cotteril was easily good enough to start matches but he always criticised his defensive duties and his reluctance to track back.

The only time he did well in my book was when he first stepped in. Played with wingers and went for it. As soon as he got a chance to make it his team it was all down hill. The squad he had was more than good enough to get promoted.

He was quite bitter about lt as he knew the players he was allowed to bring in were not of the same quality. Sometimes luck with when you start a job can go a long way to decide your destiny. Just been listening to this podcast and it was very interesting Kilgallon said that, Parkin was very quick to add they'd heard numerous things about Blackwell as a person and we suprised by Killa's opinion.

Agree with most of the above, he steadied the ship when we needed him, and had we not sacked him we probably wouldn't have been relegated that year, although i think that was more down to the bizarre timing 4 games into the season, he should have gone the day after the PO final .

He was a product of our academy, like you said. He was a tricky left winger. He's gone on to make a career out of the game elsewhere around Europe.

Went to Tapton school, loosely related to Prince Naseem if my memory serves.

That is one thing I don’t like about the podcast. They are quick to ask about Blackie and start sniggering but once they got a proper footballer on like Kilgallon it quickly changed

I don’t doubt he didn’t want players to leave, there’s a clear policy in the years following of sell sell sell.

But he did have the squad capable of promotion in his first full season.

Blackwell was a shit manager but a good no. 2. He was often credited for the creativity in the play in Warnocks early years here. There are a few recent examples of this we can relate to - Brian Kidd and yep, none other than Alan Knill.

That's fair enough, Beattie had undoubted quality and even Billy would look a bit daft if he started slagging him off. The one I can't get my head around is Maguire crediting Collins for a lot of his early development.

He was completely brought in to manage a fire sale whilst trying to remain competitive. Which he’d essentially proved he could do when Leeds were asset stripped but he still managed to get them to third.

I remember watching the Bristol City game toward the end of the season when he first took over and thinking we had a great team and swagger. To be fair we were a gnat’s chuff away from going up the following year. Then I also remember watching the Ipswich game where we were the most percentage based team ever. We went one or maybe two down early on and the crowd were urging the players to actually aim for a team mate rather than a zone. Morgan played a pass on the ground to a red and white shirt to great cheers and a bollocking from the sideline. I also remember the signings like Ertle and shudder a bit.

I’ve listened to the excellent Undr The Cosh podcast earlier, and the episode with our former centre half Matthew Kilgallon.

He said Blackwell was one of the better managers he ever worked under, he said we very solid, kept an excellent shape, made sure everyone knew what was expected of them and if we had kept Beattie in 08/09 we would have been promoted, and I’m inclined to agree with him. As a coach he has done well at Cardiff working with Warnock.

Personally I think our recent history looks relatively unkindly on Blackwell, as he steadied the ship after the Robson debacle, got rid of quite a few players who weren’t what we needed at the time, almost got us promoted and did well for us despite frequently having had players sold from underneath him.

I don't have anything to say about Blackwell, but that is one of the funniest things I've listened to in an age. Some of the episodes I find go a bit too far with the language, but this one was properly amusing. Ta.

What always baffled me was watching the warm up, they'd be doing one touch passing drills yet in the game it was hoof it to Hendo then Quinn and Monty try and gather the scraps...wash, rinse, repeat

There are Zero fond memories of him, he was a disaster and the beginning of the end in that he created the foundations for relegation.

Awful football to watch at times but had we kept him on we wouldn't have been relegated that is for sure. Should have let him go after the play-off final when we had time to replace him properly.

For half of semi-pro's career in management he was at clubs for one reason and one reason only that was to sell players and cut costs. He was never a manager he don't have the brains for that his only tactic was boot it long and hard and chase after it. I will never forgive him for that game against the pigs when we went in at HT 3-0 up, everyone in the ground including the pigs were wondering if it would end 7-0 or 8-0 and that cunt went defensive and let the pigs get back to 3-2.
