I keep picking up on bits on various threads where older Blades fans may come across as being a bit negative. It may be difficult for fans who have only really seen us over the last few years to appreciate the number of times we have blown it or just been plain crap over the years.
For anyone who is not old enough to remember the depths we have been to, (or just for a bit of nostalgia for those who do) the book linked below is one fans description of the joy and despair of following the Blades over the last fifty odd years. (highlights of that period also covered)
Make the most of these good times and lets hope that we can keep them coming for the next fifty odd years.

I'm an older fan but try to keep positive, we do stand on the brink of something great I do feel this & I think CWAK can deliver. We may not win league but a cup should not be beyond us, we've all seen bad times at the Lane but what we've seen I wouldn't wish on anyone. Anyway it's gone let's look forward and hope for better times.

Being a Blade can deliver the biggest of buzzes even when they're not playing - Burnley v Hull City - one of the greatest nights, without a doubt!

I’m an older fan too but this feels different to the Bassett and Warnock teams.
Those managers moulded our rag and tag players into a team with massive spirit and battling qualities.

However Wilder seems to be more into buying high quality players playing attacking high quality football (also with great team spirit).
I really think that we are going to shock pundits when we hit our A game and play some of these PL teams off the park.

Can’t wait to hear the reports and feedback.
It’s clear that most of the fans in the PL haven’t a clue how good we are and how much of a genius Wilder is.
I’m looking forward to this season more than any other in the past 45 years.

I look back on the 4th as a memorable season as you say we gave 15 clubs that season their biggest crowds of season, Burnley v Hull I didn't have balls to go (too nervous) like a fool I spent it at home. Hull 2 up PDQ I was bricking it, walked round lump about 40 times, never known time go so slow in all my life.

I go back to the 50s and there's others on here that can go back to then and since who have treasured memories of the grate players and managers that we've had over those years. We've had some marvellouse times that is until we hit that wall, and it is always the same wall, the lack of finance to take the next step.
We have a manager now with the right idea, you build a winning team and then you keep on improving it, but in the past this has never been the boards way of thinking, it has always been to just look as if your doing something by buying a number of players, but selllng your best players to pay for it.
So lets face it that's how three quarters of the teams even in this league get by and if Mr Wilder does any thing like this season just, how long do you think he'll be here with that kind of thinking ?.
So eat drink and be merry for to morrow never comes,...….

Burnley v Hull I didn't have balls to go (too nervous) like a fool I spent it at home. Hull 2 up PDQ I was bricking it, walked round lump about 40 times, never known time go so slow in all my life.

The absolute epitome of extreme despair and the ultimate joy of our National game all there in 90 breath-taking minutes. Two-Nowt down in double-quick time as you say, and the clarets ready to roll over for them. Who could blame them? They had nothing to play for, and to Hull City it was potentially one of the most important matches in their history. A 3rd goal for promotion - no problem surely; the game was so one-sided it was embarrassing.
Then - one of their lads came to retrieve the ball for a throw-in, just under the main stand where the massed ranks of most Blades fans were. He looked up to see hundreds of fans hanging over the edge of the stand with arms flailing, fists-pumping, scarves swirling, and a sea of contorted purple faces backed up by thousands more behind them screaming their support for him. He looked startled to say the least. The Burnley fans massed behind the goal to our left suddenly got the feeling this was no ordinary end-of-season game with a predictable outcome and galvanised themselves.
The Burnley players at last started to get their shit together and responded (they'd have been a sorry bunch if they hadn't responded to that). Every Burnley touch was cheered to the rafters; every Hull touch was booed.
At the end of the match the Burnley fans invaded the pitch and came under our stand to milk the ovation they got from us. They enjoyed it every bit as much as we did. Amazing stuff.

This team reminds me of the Liverpool (I know that analogy keeps coming up-sorry) but of the 70s and 80s; basically the best of home grown players. Football has of course moved on greatly since the 90s when more and more overseas players started turning up but there is no doubt in my mind, this is a competitive team for the Premiership.

I'm exactly the same Sheff. Its hard to explain to younger fans, that after supporting since 1974 in my case, seeing us sell after sell our better players, experience relegation to the fourth division, stand on John St on a cold Tuesday night with 9,500 in the ground (total cap doff to those that went to all away games) that after getting the shit kicked out of you for for 45 years, it IS still difficult to come to terms with our success. 1982 & 1990, and obviously last promotion to the prem, are forever etched.

Actually we were all on the Burnley end and ran them off it when we were allowed to get in. We gave Burnley such a backing during the game they came to us to celebrate at the end, their keeper in particular who'd played out of his skin since we arrived. Their fans had strangely disappeared.

I think the worst times in the past 50 years have been our two spells in the 3rd division (recently called League 1).

In the first of those we filled our team with 3rd division players to save money. And we ended up with has beens and journeymen who took us to the depths.

In the second of those we gave the job to a succession of clueless managers, many of whom had never managed before, and expected them to have the guile to get us out of that mess.

I enjoyed the old 4th division immensely. A good manager in Porterfield who was given funds and allowed to assemble a very enterprising attacking football team and got hold of the division by the scruff of the neck.

There’s a moral to this story.

I took my sons to their first game when they were old enough to take a genuine interest in it and not be a bloody nuisance to those around them.

It was Plymouth Argyle at home. That’s about....(thinking)..,,12 years ago.

They would be 9 and 6 at the time.

I said to them then... “ We are a famous football team, one of the best in our country’s history, but we haven’t won anything for years. You’ll have a lot of enjoyment watching them, but probably even more disappointment! They have a habit of letting us down badly. But the good times more than make up for the bad times. And at the end of the day, this is OUR team. And we support them no matter what”.

I’ve got two sons now who are passionate Blades. Perhaps like the good folk of Sheffield, they don’t expect a lot, but appreciate everything good that comes our way. But always expect the worst and are delighted when things don’t turn out as bad as they might have been!

Without looking it up, I think he cane from Southend FC? (Same as Chris Guthrie?).

I don’t know if it was his debut but the first game I saw him play was at Saltergate v Chesterfield.

I thought then...this lad’s going to be a player!

I’d put him right up there with Trenton Wigan tbh.

He’s much better as an ITK er on here!

It's so much more fun when we are doing well. Sort of sets the tone for the rest of the week.

All those bad times make these happy times more worthwhile. For example this Forum is such a happier place to be.

Whatever happens this year we have to survive, next year we can try to move on again. Then the same again the year after.
But realistically there are only seven or eight clubs that will never need to fear relegation.
Wolves and Leicester have had good teams before but it suddenly goes wrong and they've end up being relegated more than once.

So no matter how good it gets for us we will always be one of the 10-12 clubs that could go down

'Walk round the lump'! I've not heard that phrase for a long time. Curious. Is it a metaphor or in my case an area of grass land in an housing estate where I used to live.

They are now languishing in the National League (formerlycthe Conference)and have been close to extinction for the want of Wayne Rooney's weekly wage packet. He also mentioned Chesterfield being next to bottom of the very same league. Other former league teams teams in their are Halifax, Yeovil, Maidenhead, Wrexham,Stockprt, Hartlepool, Torquay, Aldershot, Barrow. Puts it all in perspective I guess.

Maidenhead have never been in the league but they have already won at Stockport and Torquay this season and drawn at home with Chesterfield and lost to Hartlepool.

That's four ex league teams in their first four games which seems bizarre to me having seen them play the likes of Hampton and Richmond, Bromley, Basingstoke etc whilst in a lower league than Slough and their big local rivals Marlow
