Is McGoldrick clinical enough for the Premier League?

It’s a worthy debate and one I was having after he missed the first one. I know it’s a whole different level of quality but Sterling/ Aguero/ Salah have that chance and you’re 1-0 down. That’s the quality you’re up against in this league.

So you were debating whether our player of the year was good enough for the prem after 45 seconds and 1 touch. Fuck my life.

Sometimes I wonder if people just read the title of posts and assume its a hate post.

All of the above mentioned talents are why I said I am a fan of his and he is beneficial to the team as a whole.

Not once did i say he should be dropped. Merely suggested that his finishing might not be good enough for those golden opportunities we will get few of and suggested maybe playing him in AM behind players who might be more likely to make those chances count.

Mate, calm down. Show me where I directed comments at you? McG might have failings, which player doesn't, but his contribution to our game has helped improve us. Show me where I suggested he should be dropped, or come to that, where you did? It's a forum, people have differing views, but the overall one we appear to share is that DM is a decent player who has many fine qualities. Whether he can contribute enough goals, well we'll know soon enough.

I reckon if Robinson had been a little more aware, he'd have scored after McGoldrick's first shot.
I felt that too. Also I'd have wagered Didsy would have lifted it over Ramsdale had it been a few more mins into the game. If it's possible for a forward to get caught cold?! Then I think thats what happened. Wont be too hard on him for not taking the admittedly good chance.

I think if that chance had come later in the game Didzy either scores (goes for chip) or Robinson get onto rebound, it was within the first minute and I we werent settled into the game.

From what I saw of Didzy yesterday he'll hold his own in the prem and will be a vital part of the squad.

He’s not as clinical as sharp, mcburnie etc
However he offers so much more to the team than just his goals which is why he’ll play more than not

We should be more worried that our record signing Striker miss hit the ball from 6 yards out prior to Sharp scoring which some scrubber on Porktalk has pointed out.

You're not, though. Those players are going to be in matches where we're unlikely to pick up anything but a heavy beating.

Usually the quality of forwards you're up against is Glenn Murray, Ashley Barnes, Che Adams, Christian Benteke, Troy Deeney, Chris Wood and whoever the hell was playing upfront for Newcastle today.

Don't fall for the hype. It's harder, it's hardly impossible.

Any old posts to back this up?
(because I haven't seen any)
Doesn't score, doesn't assist.

Doesn't really do anything.

A downgrade on Clayton Donaldson.

Discuss...
Unquestionable attitude and effort , questionable talent
McGoldrick needs replacing in January, so does Washington. We need 2 quality strikers, hopw Wilder gets the money.
Title is wank. With just a little thought you could have entitled it "David McGoaldrought".
1/10. Must try harder.
The comments comparing Goldy with other strikers who have lean spells is ridiculous. They also have fruitful spells which Goldy doesn't. If Billy doesn't score, then we can't depend on the other strikers to do so and this has been our failing in recent games. We can't keep relying on Bash, Egan or o.g. to pop up and keep doing what our alternative strikers should be doing. Washington, Goldy and Clarke won't get double figures between the three of them for the rest of the season and this could be our undoing. Hopefully this will be sorted out in the JTW.
Yes, if you don't watch away games you might not have rated Donaldson as highly. All of his goals were scored away from home. Not that it matters, but McGoldrick couldn't have scored any of the 5 chances Donaldson put away, as they were all finishes from distance, which McGoldrick doesn't appear to be able to do. Very different players.
Rely on the honesty of a 6 year old on this. I showed my son the highlights yesterday and he said "McGoldrick is rubbish at finishing, he should have had a hat-trick". I'll go with that!

In my view though, he's a good footballer and needs a goal to boost his confidence. He gives us a completely different option to the other forwards we've got. In the ideal world we'd have someone that wasn't a free transfer and was able to do what McG does but with more pace and goal scoring ability, however we haven't got the cash to fund one of those so I'm happy with what he brings to the team.
I thought his name was David Mcgoaldrought!??
There is a different thread a day laughing at deluded pig fans

I bet. they're reading through this one having a good laugh
another disappointing display , falling away down to 4th
we desperately need forwards who can finish
sharp mcgoldrick clarke , not good enough
what was mcgoldrick thinking trying to lob the keeper
Getting a bit ahead of ourselves there.

My thoughts are that if you are relying on Goldie to get you 20 to 25 goals this season then he ain't your man (though he will chip in and score a few).

If though, you are using him to set up others to enable others to score enough goals to help keep us up this season, then he is your man.

He will do a fine job for us this season, and the other lads up top will benefit from having Goldie on the pitch with them.
If any of our strikers get us 20-25 goals this season it’ll be a miracle and we should immediately sell him for whichever club comes up with the 100m asking price!

Not sure I said that....I think you need to to re-read what I put. If you read my other posts I've also said his hold up play was top quality.

Read my other post on this subject - Sharp one chance goal / Maupay one chance goal. He will miss chance as will all of them, however we won't be creating chances like we did in the championship so our conversion rates need to be better

It's almost as if Prem strikers always get shots on target and convert 90% of 'em reading some of the comments on here. God help Billy when he has his 2nd shot on goal and it doesn't go in.....

One game in (ONE) and we get this nonsense.

Sharp was shit too as he only scored one and Robinson should be transported down under as he didn't score at all.

Glad you are a huge 'fan' as god knows what you' have posted if you were a hater.

That's an absolutely ridiculous comment. I think the OP was a thought provoking and thoughtful post. There's no reason to get your knickers in a twist. David Mcgoldrick is an absolutely quality player, as the OP suggests. The discussion about where to play him to get the best out of him is interesting and shutting it down is just childish and annoying.

It's like me saying 'Who's the better player, Messi or Mcgoldrick? If you answer Messi, you're not a blade.'

That won't happen though MHB. There's no way on earth anyone's conversion rates are going to improve in a higher league.

However, that's not important either as our aim is not to win two thirds of our games any more. Averaging a goal a game is usually enough to stay up along with a half-decent defensive record.

If you read the original post it quite clearly states often he wasn't all that clinical last season either (goals vs good chances to score). I was tempted to post this question during pre season but held off. The number of clear cut chances we are going to get this season are going to reduce dramatically so I think it's a valid question to ask.
Let's get him out then and get Mbappe in, fucking sharpish as well

CHECK MATE

We got beat against Leeds last year and the 2 best players on the park, by a stretch, we're Bash and Didsy. Looked on here that night and he was getting stick. Just unreal.

Glitch in the matrix here, pressing reply to a previous quote and it will not have it.

Admin, I demand a retrial

Thought provoking and thoughtful?

Querying one of our best players who consistently did it last season, after ONE game? That is, ONE game?

It's like me saying 'Who's the better player, Messi or Mcgoldrick? If you answer Messi, you're not a blade.'

That's risible.

I never made it a 'big Blade' thing, I just said that it is pathetic to question him after one game.

The thing is pal you obviously are making it a 'Big Blade' thing because your conveniently ignoring the fact that I discuss this was also a debatable point last season, praise other aspects of his game, state the fact that I posed this question to myself in pre-season also and suggested other options.

But oh no, if every sentence is not praising every aspect of every players game then u get treated like ur not a true supporter in here.

This forum is really turning to the dogs. No wonder so many people can't be arsed posting new debates in threads anymore because all that happens is they get treated like an outcast.

Disgusting.

So why do it after one game then?

Where was your post after Hull away in April last year, as if it was 'debatable' last season, your post would surely have been just as valid then?

Outcast?
Disgusting?

Must be windy out there today, with sand seemingly blowing into variousl human orifices.

thought the keeper did well tbf. one shot on target.. one missed the post by 6 inches with the keeper all over the place

Now dont get me wrong, I am a huge Didsy fan, his fitness for a guy of his age is amazing and the tracking back and other defensive duties cannot be questioned.

However my one concern is his conversion rate...Especially in the Premier League where we will only get a select few clear cut chances of scoring.

Now I know he will chip in with a few goals throughout the season and his goal to game ratio since being with us isn't completely terrible (1 goal every 3 games). However it could definitely be better, and last season the amount of good chances for scoring he missed was probably equal with the amount of goals he did score.

In the Premier League we cant afford this...

The main difference between McGoldrick and the likes of McBurnie and Sharp is that when they get a chance they will make sure more often than not the ball ends up in the back of the net any way possible.

So putting it out there...

1) Is McGoldrick clinical enough for the Premier League where our clear cut chances of scoring will be severely reduced?

2) Is playing him in AM a better option?
Weren’t you one of the 5 who voted for Wilder out in the poll after just 2 games last season? And then on your maiden post, you said you’d you’d only give Wilder a ‘couple of more games’ in the same thread.

You’ve either got shite judgment or there’s a whiff abaaht you pal, and for that reason I’m out of this thread. ;)

We will be better placed to judge after a decent run of games at this level. Kane, Martial, Rashford , Salah etc all missed more chances than they took this weekend and McG didn't have as many chances as any of those did.
Of the ones he did have only the first attempt was disappointing, but it was so early in the game so I am tempted to let him off. The driven attempt that flashed wide was thoroughly decent and I am not sure many strikers could have scored from the same position.

I think it's absolutely fine for anyone to voice minor concerns over a player. McG has surprised many with his game here, and the qualities and skills he brings to the team. Like Billy he's not getting younger or quicker, but as someone else pointed out, he does have a great football brain which mitigates things considerably.
When the time eventually comes to replace him, will you need one or two players to represent the skills, experience, work rate and judgement he contributes today?

In many ways, he represents everything Wilder looks for in a player, so that would be possibly the first thing his replacement needs.

Maybe Wilder bought all those expensive forwards with this job in mind. Personally I think there's life in the old dog yet, which is great news for the club. Maybe he'll be around long enough to pass on some skills and knowledge to the guy who replaces him. A hard act to follow I think. :)
