Gives us a real attacking threat at RWB with end product and could well evolve into a similar option to Valencia (not that he was a genuine option for us). If Norwood gets injured or suspended, then he provides us the option of Baldock coming in at RWB and switching to RCM. At present we have Lunny and possibly Morrison there.
Although he's had by all accounts a good preseason I'd like to think we are not reliant on Lundatram. His emergence would be a nice to have but I'd like to think we enter the season with more recognised quality where possible.
I know it's Chris's job to talk him up and as a young player he can improve, but I'd we are starting against Bournemouth with a guy who couldn't make the XI much last season at a lower level, then something is not right.
The squad is starting to pick itself if we get Phillips too.
Henderson
Basham Egan O'Connell
Phillips Norwood Fleck Stevens
Freeman/Robinson (1 from)
Sharp/Robinson/McBurnie (2 from)
Subs: Moore, Jagielka, Osborn, Morrison, McGoldrick, Mousset, Freeman/McBurnie/Sharp (1 from)
I'd be delighted with that matchday squad.
who is clarke? why can't I remember? help!
He ended up at Crawley because we couldn't afford him, he scored for Crawley at the Lane in Danny Wilson's last match (I think)
Believe he did. You and I were in the BLUT.
yes 2012 on loan i believe, was very good then
Yep I remember thinking we should sign him. I thought he was much better than Billy Clarke. Mind you, Billy had a good tackle. Fishing tackle. He’s got a shop on Alderson Road.
Sells reyt maggots, does Billy....Billy Clarke?
Good point!Did we just pay 10m for a sub in mousset?
Maybe this is why baldock has been rumoured to be leaving?
Bash?I've never known Matt Phillips to be a defensive player, I'm not that sure he'd be suited to the RWB role at all. If he did come in it'd be for K Freeman, but I don't see it.

yes i remember that. was at a time when our scouting system was just what club staff had seen on there travels Billy Clarke Darius Henderson (relish), Greg Halford(s), Ched Evans (cycles) & Kevin McDonald(s)![]()
Three pints of Wards? (Ashley, Mitch, Jamie.)You might have started something here!
Can I have Phil Starbucks (coffee)? (No “s” I know - but it’s the best I could do!)
That's right mate, totally bolloxed
Generally agree with this. Phillips has plenty yet to offer as an outright attacking wide player and whilst his strength and pace means he would be very convertible to the RWB position, I don't quite see it myself just yet - for him personally I mean. I'm sure he would much rather be kept as an out and out attacker of teams. We can dream though!! He has all the attributes to be perfect for the role. Always thought he had a lot about him defensive wise with his intelligence and his upper body strength.Baldock’s contract is up at the end of the year. The rumours could well have been the work of an agent putting pressure on us. Remember it was reported that Baldock was interested. I think Wilder is keeping his options open at RWB. That said I’m not sure if Phillips will be the one. Wingers who move further back usually do so because they have a better chance of playing at a higher level in that position. See Danny Rose, Ashley Young. Phillips has shown no signs of slowing and I imagine others would happily play him in his favoured position(s). I think for us he’d be a back-up RWB at most. But then again, you never know what could happen after a year or so.

Only 3 pages but not a negative comment so far. I'll add to that by saying signing him would be a cherry on the top on what has been a sensational window.

Not so fast!
...in League One. Seven years ago. I agree with Niceguyeddie , just his agent putting him out there for a last pay day. We've surely moved on from this kind of makeweight signing?
You don't rate him them? Each to their own I suppose. The rumour may well have been originated by his agent but I'm not sure he should be classed as a makeweight. He has been a regular in the West Brom side ever since he joined them incuding during their stay in the Prem and was reportedly one of their better players again last season.
Considering the squad and signings made so far this summer, another option at CM/RCM would be my preference but Phillips would be able to play RWB (as he's been doing lately), RAM (if CW goes with 2 attacking midfielders behind a single striker) and possibly RCM (when CW goes with a flatter 3 in midfield).

Do we reckon that would be around the figure wanted? I mean that would be a no brainer if he were available for that price. Having said that surely we can't take our spending past the £50m mark. I'm already in wildest dreams territory with the amount we've already paid outMatt phillips is premier league class and would be our best RWB and would be good competition for CM hes not some washed up has been, if we can get him for 5/6 million would be a bargain
How weird that I would take 4 of that starting 11 now
