The best save you've seen at the Lane.

Hendo vs Hull last october, Henriksen's goalbound header late second half, magnificient

John Hope from Roger Hynd of Birmingham - a close range screaming header, top corner bound, and he bloody caught it.

What an enigma that lad was eh? World class (I mean that) at first and dog-shite later. Poor lad. He had some issues I think. His confidence quickly became shot. I’ll never forget him though, for reasons good and bad.

I remember shilton Getting 10/10 in all the papers the day after we beat them one nil

He pulled off about a dozen world class saves even though he was 40 obviously riled up by Clough saying he had ' shot it ' the week before

Jim Brown's double save against Chelsea when he turned a vicious low drive on to the post which rebounded across the face of the goal to ( Hollins , Wilkins ?) to smash in from close range , only for Brown to launch himself across the full width of the goal to parry it away .

Not only was it the best save I ever saw at BDTBL , it was at least the equal of any I have ever seen .

Simon Tracey Alan Kelly Mel Rees and now I think of it keefy waugh pronounced waff all produced outstanding saves at one point or other but I've yet to witness a better goalkeeping performance than Alan Kelly's at Wembley in 93. Hendos save against Norwich at the Lane last season deserves a mention.

I followed the alert to your reply, and my eyes alighted on your post one above, 'and then you woke up'! Fortunately I saw the proper reply below it immediately after. I assume the match was 1961 or 62. I'm delighted your memory confirms my recollection - without films, photographs, etc., it is hard to remember details from so long ago. Can you remember anything more of the match or the save?
I would have been 10 or 11 so 61-62 seems about right. I can remember the save better than what I did yesterday but that's about it I am afraid. UTB

I seem to remember he made a number of outstanding saves that game. Blades played well but Jennings was a World Class keeper at his peak unfortunately for us.

What I got from that match was how huge Jennings was as well. Big fucking hands, arms, tall and looking ungainly, But fuck me he got to Woody's shot and it was one of those where the whole stadium went "Awwww!" and applauded the doddy-footed Irish twat.

Phil Parks was a big lad an all. As was John Connaugton. You look at Hendo these days and he looks like he'd break compared to them lot.

pommpey

Pat Jennings saving a Woody thunderbolt at the Lane End in November 1974. pommpey will remember this too
Jennings was an annoyingly good keeper, his party trick was catching the ball in one hand. He always seemed to have a stormer of a game at the lane he must have had hands like shovels.

Not at the lane, but remember steve conroy pulling off a double (blocked the first and then touched rebound on to the bar i think) at filbert street. im sure this was one of sabellas first games for us in a 1-0 win.

Just after Italia 90. Brilliant and the Blades gave him a proper reception. Shilts acknowledged us an 'all.
Beat by Hodges mis- kick.
Mel Rees against...Liverpool I think.
Sometimes think he might arguably been the best of the three we had then.

Somebody give Tom McAlister a mention.

I went to my old programmes this morning, and it must have been September 1962, 2-1 defeat. Both Hinton and Wharton played for Wolves that day, and Wharton scored just before half-time. I suspect that was a long-range screamer towards the Kop. My brother was still annotating the programmes with scorers and final score, but had stopped writing match reports by then (see thread on 60 years ago'). The next home match programme has no mention of the Wolves game. So as it was the era before TV highlights of every game, Internet, mobile phones, etc., it appears Hodgy pulled off a worldly save, and there's only me and you remember it... :(

Mel Rees against Liverpool; when he defied the laws of gravity, for any away GK Pat Jennings playing for Spurs in 70's Woody hit this thunderbolt it was going in top left hand corner of kop goal. Pat Jennings leapt like a cat across his goal and got to it, even Woody was impressed.

Jamal Blackman penalty save v Brentford season before last. Kept the momentum from the League One campaign going and enabled us to carry on the journey to the fookin Prem!!

I remember in the 60's always stading directly behind the goal on the Kop with my grandad. Just in front of the barrier by the big drop so we could get a better view of Hodgy. Never forget his brief wave to the crowd, his bright green jumper and those white, string gloves like my dad had for driving ! Those were the days. They are the reason I am still hanging in there.

Known to most of us as 'the trench'.

Although it was roofed, the Kop was old and leaked, so after heavy rain part of the trench filled up to about 6 inches. Whilst there may not have been yer' actual sharks in this pool, the fear that it may be half full of piss, made everyone take a wide berth.

Try imparting this kind of useful information to the yoof of today and they go all glazed over.

ISC - I remember when it were all field around here....

Somebody give Tom McAlister a mention.

February 24, 1973. Filbert Street. Birchenall bursts into the penalty area and smashes a piledriver towards the bottom left-hand corner. McAlister dives full-length and somehow tips it round the post. Incredible save. Final score 0-0.

Is that OK? It’s always stuck in my mind but, to be honest, I’d put it just behind that John Hope save against Birmingham. Big, big game, electric atmosphere and he actually caught it.

In what order would you put Hendo , Kenny ,Tracey, Kelly and Rees ??
