Football is bonkers, Celtic have turned down a reported £25 million for a defender who I have never heard of, Baldock must be worth £30 million in that case.

But, but, but........Fred, wasn't it only yesterday that the hoops valued Baldock at £3mil? I guess that the transfer wind up north must bring with it a level of depreciation that we don't understand........of course their original valuation was never realistic, and in today's rapidly rising market Baldock looks a good bet compared to many who are touted as the next best thing. Whether GB leaves or not, £3mil was never going to come close to Wilder's valuation of the player.

Good point Fred, but I think that was a different John Snow to be honest

Oh you are awesome.
Do you clap when we win a throw in after missing a penalty?
I'm selling Blades CHAMPIONS LEAGUE winning bell end caps.
How many shall I put you down for.

It is a bit staggering to be honest to see a failed bid of £15m met with criticism really – a figure nearly 4 times what was until recently our record fee. It’s far more than I’m comfortable with us paying for a Championship striker that might be ok in the PL. We may well miss out on both Maupay and McBurnie, but it won’t be through lack of ambition and it certainly won’t be through lack of backing the manager. That’s certainly not always been the case in the past, so it’s fair to recognise when we are visibly loosening the purse strings.

I thought schools didn''t break up until a couple of weeks? Is this the type of entitled moron we are going to have in the premier? dear oh dear

And the same goes for McBurnie & Maupay so why the fuck are they worth £20m plus?
Thats todays market. If they scored 15 to 20 goals for us next season they'd be worth double.

Egan/JOC - current value to me would be £18/20m - again, do it on the PL for a season or more then your looking at double.
Both Maupay and McBurnie are young with potential to improve, having already shown the qualities we are looking for, albeit only for a short time. If successful over a Prem season and we stay up, their value as "HeCanDoMagic" says, will increase considerably. It would only take one of them to be a success to validate the fees paid.

I would expect hefty add-ons and sell-ons to be critical parts of any deals for NM and OM once we get within range of a money up front amount acceptable to Brentford and Swansea. Compared to the established Prem clubs, plus Villa, who scan Europe and beyond, and afford mega bucks, we are shopping in a smaller pool. I think we need McBurnie, and either Maupay or Marriott, to really set us up well for next season, and may need to pay what many think is silly money to get them.

Is that based on actual facts? I'd say the closer you get to the window closing, the more expensive players get as desperation takes hold. At least earlier in the window, clubs have a chance to replace their outgoing players.

There's no doubt a sweet spot.
It depends on the player, their circumstances and the selling club and their circumstances.

Sometimes, you look at a player and know he’s no.2 on several other managers’ lists but the selling club wants to get a deal done early to finance their own transfer business. So you do it quickly before one of the other managers fails to get his number one on the list. Spurs have done this with Ndombele.

Or it could be that a skint club are wanting to maximise their income and have no real intention of buying a replacement. They’ll tend to hold out until TDD in the hope that a desperate club will overpay, providing they’ve got offers in. On the other hand, if other teams move on and there’s only one club still interested in TDD, that club might take advantage, knowing the skint club needs to sell and lower their offer.

There’s a lot of variations to this.

As you say they are both untested at PL level. They have both just had only one successful season and that was in the Championship so to some extent they are a gamble. The world of football is littered with players who had one good season, went for big money and then "disappeared". Two recent examples Scot Hogan who went for big money from Brentford to Villa and never did it at Villa. We had him on loan last season and although he scored that vital first goal against Forest he didn't pull up any trees for us and clearly CW not that impressed or we would have tried to buy him. Another example, Waghorn (one good season at Ipswich) who we bid for but were outbid (thank heaven) by FL's Derby. Again he did virtually nothing there last season. Thank god we got Didsy instead for £0!! CW/AK obviously think Maupay and McB can do it but CW will have a price in mind and will not pay over the odds. If we do get one or other (or even both!) let's hope this is another CW master stroke.

If we pay £20m and he scores 15-20 PL goals is it still silly money? That's the gamble.

McBurnie is leaving it's just a question of when...and who to. I would think we are still in the driving seat and reckon we will make one more bid. Maybe 16m and a sell on clause will be enough to do it. I really hope we can.follow through and get him in.

Will McBurnie hand in a transfer request?

And if so, will that help?

He just needs to say he wants to go. No need for a formal request. Maupay has clearly done so.

Both will be leaving for the Premier League this Summer.

We should not panic or succumb to the paywharrevaitteks line of thinking.

10 to 15 million is splashing the cash.

Paying 20 mill for McBurnie or Maupay is being ripped off.
They both gave huge potential but both could be 1 season wonders and could be very average next season in the Champiomsjop.
So both signings are risks...if you’re paying 20 million it shouldn’t a risk, it should be gauranteed PL quality at that price.

I agree in principle but pragmatically we very much need to survive next season. I can’t think of guaranteed PLQ at that price or less unless you’re prepared to buy a battered old Austin at way over the book price and write it off in two years...

It would be written off immediately. The fella's past it. I'd rather keep the money in the bank or spend on another area if the striker(s) aren't out there within budget.

I understand your thinking mate, but I really believe we need a couple of quality strikers to survive. If that’s right you have to measure the inflated fee against the consequences of not paying it. I mean the two Ms, not the battered old Austin, just to be clear.

Oh, and off. Fucking ‘off’. :)
