I think a few are very harsh on Sheffield City Council too. I'm not saying they're perfect but its not always been Labour I might add and what do people want, a Tory lead Council?! People want to look at what the Tories are doing to this country both now and over the years in my view.

I know you asked the question but in doing so appeared to suggest that McCabe was involved. There is plenty of Chinese investment in the city, it's not always about McCabe.

It's another council cock up and was big news some months ago. They were too busy dreaming of first class travel and 5 star hotels to do a proper job.

I wasn't disputing the business 'qualities' that some posters commented on where the Chinese are concerned. I was expanding this to show that when in discussion with the private sector the council aren't always equipped to show the necessary attributes required where major deals are concerned.

I know. I should have said this is the type of things that occur - the promise of thousands of jobs for instance - when you have councillors acting as if they were entrepreneurs aided by employees with little experience of international dealings advising them.

I'd suggest the Council are actually quite equipped to dealing with the private sector in that there are thousands of contracts in place of which relatively minuscule number ever cause issues and most help the people of Sheffield daily. I manage a contract worth a million pounds a year, that's relatively small scale and you've probably no idea what it is or why it exists.

That's the thing, you only ever hear about it when it goes wrong and then theres a public interest to report what's gone wrong, theres never a public interest to report when something goes right because that's just business as usual.

In terms of new deals and inward investment, especially on large scale you meet opposition that can easily send a deal south because of the political element, deals and contracts are placed under much higher scrutiny than any contract in the private sector and that's the tough part to get right.

As I mentioned above, the deal to build a new library and convert the existing library would have been seen as positive by some, particularly people who were able to access new facilities easier and it would have been beneficial for the city however you look at it, and that would have been without the extra money. But conservationists used anything they could to stop the deal going through.

Not sure about that Leeds and Manchester have Labour administrations and their City Centres are surging along. Ours are just fucking useless tosspots.

A year or so ago I had a look around to see what councillors get paid. I think the leader of Manchester council was earning close to £60,000; Leeds was about £40,000; even Nottingham was £36,000.

In Sheffield I think the council leader was earning £28,000. Deputy leader was something like £19,000.

I’m sure people will complain that this is too much, and claim they should be paid less.

However, I’d suggest that if we really want someone with a great business brain, experience and skills on the council negotiating deals with investors, then we’re going to have to pay more.

However, I’d suggest that if we really want someone with a great business brain, experience and skills on the council negotiating deals with investors, then we’re going to have to pay more.

The problem with that is the Leader of the Council is elected and not recruited, so at the minute we end up with whoever a small number of Labour Party Councillors deem the best of the bunch. It says a lot when Julie Dore is that person. But you'll never get a business leader going up for election because Councillors get even less and have to put quite a lot of effort in, think its about £14k a year.
