Big fan of Steadinho when he was with us. Often forgotten as one of the successful Warnock punts with transfers that season – there was outrage on the messageboards, not Madine-esque but definitely higher than justified, with many critical that we were even considering him as a back-up for Hulse. I even remember a Sunderland mate texting me claiming that “this is revenge for your lot selling us Andy Gray”.

When he then started with Hulse, even bigger criticism at that team news. But he very quickly won people over, developed a great partnership with Hulse, scored some super goals, and his body-on-the-line moment for the equaliser against Wigan really should have counted for more.

GLTTL indeed.

I remember during the period we couldn't buy goals, can't remember which of the many ones it was but clearly before Sharp came home and suggesting we should go back in for Stead. About a month later it had gone full circle and the rumour turned up that we were doing it! (Usual credibility a friend had told him from someone high up at the club.)

Scorer of some of the most "could have been important but ultimately counted for nowt" goals in recent memory. If we'd stayed up that season he'd probably be deified for the Wigan equaliser and the great strike at Charlton (still one of my favourite Blades moments, even if - as stated - it ultimately counted for nowt).

He's just rolled out his striker academy round our way. Unfortunately I'm too old for it. GLTTL

I think Hulse was a good call. Had a touch of class, but a bit of bad luck with injury at the Lane.
He had one bad injury, went to Derby and was banging the goals in for a few seasons. Granted not an easy decision to call after the injury.

really liked him as a player. He had quality for sure. I think if he hadnt had that injury i think he would have played most of his carreer in the premier league.

I also liked Stead.

Reminded me of the McGoldrick signing, was underwhelmed with both signings
But both players surprised me with their quality and both had and had a good attitude giving full effort.
Would class both Stead and McGoldrick as “nice” players, both like to bring the ball down and have better footballing ability than I thought.

He was prolific for Huddersfield and got his big move to Blackburn where he also did well. But he failed at Sunderland and a Sunderland mate told me they had tee shirts made with “I saw John Stead score” on them. Such was his mediocre form there.

I thought he was a decent player but he had a tendency to play out wide rather than get in the box where he could do most damage. He was brave though and gave 100%. He just needed better direction imo.

My local club too, BornonShoreham. I don't see many Blades in Harrogate - mainly Leeds and the big clubs. It was lovely watching the Leeds fans howl at the Derby match.

My Local club too... Seen Hgate Town a few times last season when they played Wrexham in the League and FA Cup, so didn't see any goals at all..... Highly recommended will probably catch the odd game next season around work commitments etc. They had Clayton Donaldson there in around 2002 amongst others, I am surprised we don't use them more for sending loan players however they do use Leeds a bit. 4G pitch there wont help some as Bradford City refused to risk 1st team players in pre-season last season and lost 7-2 !

See him now and again, he’s always very pleasant and has a very down to earth wife and family.

I think if you're from Huddersfield living in Rotherham would be an upgrade so its not surprising he's down to earth! ;) Does seem a good lad as you say.
