From Monday 3rd June they will be showing a series of The Big Match from the 1974-75 season.

Blades finished only 4 points behind champions Derby that season! When Derby came to Bramall Lane in October 1974, it was an entertaining match, Derby scored first, then we equalised and it was end to end stuff for the rest of the game but Derby scored the winner. Had the scores been reversed then we would have needed to win at Birmingham in last game of the season to become champions!

Presumably it will be the London show that they will be showing? Don't forget ITV's coverage was very regionalised back then.

They did show a London team for the main match but then also showed brief highlights of two other matches from around the country.

I'm terribly looking forward to our TV appearances from the 75/76 season.
The beginning of our demise.

I’ll be watching that SB after the recent thread when I was asking for you older lads recollections of the season with it being our highest east finish in 50 years

We would have only needed the draw we got at Birmingham if we’d beaten Luton at home, who were relegated, instead of only drawing 1-1.
Probably the closest I’ll ever come to seeing us win the league.

Thanks for telling us about this - I'll be really interested to watch it. I don't watch much TV (I mostly look at porn on the computer) but I'll definitely tune in for this one. In fact, I think I'll get me mam to tape it for me - I think I've got enough room on my 3 hour VHS tape - if not I'll just have to put some sellotape over the lugs on me sister's tape - it's only full of Downton Abbey crap anyway - and tape over t' top of it. 😜

On a serious note: genuinely thanks for informing us. That's a bit of a golden era in my time watching Sheffield United. And Derby County were indeed a very fine team, with the likes of Archie Gemmill, Roy McFarland, John Hinton, John O'Hare, Kevin Hector, Roger Davies, etc. I would have been at that match at the lane in 1974 for sure. I remember going to the Baseball Ground too - probably the same season. I remember being stood behind the goal in a steep stand and the steps were made of wood. That's two things you don't see nowadays - standing areas - and stands constructed from wood (just as well re the latter).

I'd forgotten how close we came to Derby in the table - although this was back in the days of 2 points for a win - so we were 2 wins behind them, or 6 points, by today's standards. Still impressive though!

For any young 'uns tuning in, who never saw that side play, things to look out for perhaps are the ease with which the great TC plays the game. He never looked flustered or even in a hurry. He just gets the ball and does what he wants with it. Launching 70 yard passes with perfect precision - or doing a little shuffle and going past players like they aren't there. Then there's the wing play of Woodward, and the thunderous shot that he had. The lad could blast them home from 35 yards. But, it wasn't just the fact he could kick it hard, he could bend it as well. Watch him take corners with either side of his foot, and make it swerve through the air. Then there's the ferocious tackling of Hockey - watch him chase down his prey and snap at their ankles relentlessly. And the lionheart courage of Dearden - a rakish lad - not a lot of meat on him - but would run through a brick wall and get on the end of passes and crosses from TC and Woody and turn them into goals.

Great days!

Maybe, maybe, but they werent a patch on Adkins 'Wild Geese' hero's. Now that lot could play. Big Higgie, Captain Mac, Adacock, brave as a lion Howard in the net, the unseen work trojan that was Commander Hammond, Wooly Bully Woolford, and of course 'sniffer' Baxter. What a side.

That team will be remembered for decades to come - for different reasons I reckon! And the "lap of honour" after the last home match of the season, which ended in defeat to Scunthorpe, was a "classic". In all my years of watching the Blades I've never seen anything like that in my life. A near empty stadium and the fans that did stay behind to watch it were shouting abuse at the players! Even when we've been relegated the fans have been more empathetic than that. Totally deserved btw!

Sometimes I sit and wonder who has been our worst ever manager, but I can't get past the idea that Adkin's wins this hands down.

Hockey had moved on by 1974/75.

Sure Silent Blade will know the details but I think he broke his leg and then struggled on his return.... sound familiar?

Yes, left us for Norwich in February 1973, Jim Bone coming the other way. Yes, Hockey wasn't the same coming back from his broken leg although he scored a spectacular equalizer against his old team at St Andrews in his first league match after the injury.

Never lets us down.

Who would have been the midfield 'enforcer' in 74/75? - Eddy? Speight?

Eddy was the "thinker", Speight was the one who did the tackling although he wasn't popular until 1978, like Monty was for us in 2000s.
Do you think that was partly why we went down? That he wasn’t a top level player, only starting to look good when we dropped through the divisions , and we missed Hockey’s ability to stop the opponents from playing?

In mid 70's our season tickets (with my mum and gandad) were directly behind the goal on row B of the BLUT. I remember Keith Eddy once taking a penalty at Bramall Lane end and the ball landed on my knee. Next time I saw anything like it was just under 30 years later at Wembley!

Yes, Furphy's 3rd division signings werent good enough. We missed Salmons.

Not Chico Hamilton? To my knowledge, Eddy missed a penalty twice and both of them hit the woodwork. Leeds (a) in Sept 74 and Man U (h) in Dec 75.

I usually was in A row of the BLUT between 1971 and 1977

Actually thinking about it, it may have been Hamilton. It was a shocker anyhow!!

That made me think how we’ve had two crap Hamiltons, then I thought of Hammond and it dawned on me. Ham. Never sign a player whose name starts with Ham.
