At the moment we have 16 players for our first team squad. Looking at the out of contract championship players, could some of these act as back up and do a job for us like Martin Cranie?

Martin Olsson: LWB, 31, Swansea, 48 caps for Sweden
Jack Rodwell: CB/CM, 28, Blackburn, bad reputation previously, but apparently had a decent season
Josh McEachran: CM, 26, Brentford, similar player to Norwood, decent back up and good pedigree
David Marshall: GK, 34, Hull, if Henderson deal doesn't come off, although Liverpool are said to be interested
Tyler Blackett: LB/CB, 25, Reading, cover for O'Connell, came through Man Utd set up

Blackett most impressive for me from that list. Decent targets will all be expecting £50k pw so the OOC/FFP market maybe the best value

Yoann Barbet
Ethan Pinnock
Krystian Bielik
Amari Bell
Leroy Fer
John Obi Mikel
Mo Diame
Luca Connell
Tom Bayliss
Kenneth Zohore
Lukas Jutkiewicz
Gary Madine
Jack Marriott
Kemar Roofe
Jon Dadi Bodvarsson

The way I see it we are gonna need at least 3/4 of the players we sign to be squad players.... we aren’t gonna buy 8/9 guaranteed first teamers

These will either be punts on younger players or picking up some decent options on cheap deals or frees.

Personally the likes of fer on a free or having a look at mcrachan make sense as we’d not have to pay a fee. Other than that the likes of a Baylis / Conell for a reasonable cheap fee would be a decent low risk gamble.

That said... we certainly need to add some higher end quality to the squad if we want to compete.

Vaulks - hahaha

I'd also consider Dallas as a cheap back-up for Stevens who will undoubtedly start as LWB

Villa's promotion may open one or two opportunities. They won't want to hang onto Hogan so may be more reasonable in the fee they'll seek and if they are likely to get Abraham back again, would Kodjia be surplus? However, he wouldn't be cheap.

Jack Marriot won't be that cheap because he's young and has had a decent season at Derby and he's only had one season there, they won't want him to go. I'd really like Marriot too, he's going to be in the PL player in a year or two I think.

'Cheap' is subjective and relative.

He'd cost less than half what Maupay would, and probably even less than Assombalonga.

Jonny Williams could potentially be a cracking cheap signing for someone this summer. Available on a free after his contract expired with Charlton (been offered a new one but he is looking at his options). Still only 25 despite looking like Wayne Rooney if he had decided against the hair transplant.

Premier League might be a bit of a jump but I thought he was a great player at Palace a few years ago and a genuinely good character when i watched Sunderland Til I Die (although i might be biased because i always used to sign him on FIFA 12...)

Not sure Hogan is Prem quality tbh

('Proper') Sunderland fans that I share an ale house with wouldn't have him back for their 2nd (& counting?) 'tilt' at (3rd division) promotion

He'll be cheaper, but not cheap :)

Still looking at £10m for Marriott easily.

I'd bite your hand off if you offered me Marriott for £10m, think he'd bag a few in the Prem but generally would be one for the future too, would be a great player for Billy to hand the baton on to, he'd learn a lot off Billy, they have a similar style in the box but Marriott has pace.

That's fair. Sunderland fans I've talked to have said he has undoubted ability but was frustrating because of his injuries (one guy said to me he'd 100% be a Premier League player if his legs weren't made of tissue paper) which sounded bit similar to McGoldrick when he was at Ipswich.

That could (probably) mean he is crocked but if someone can get him back fit and in the form he showed he was capable of producing at Palace then they could potentially have a very good player on their hands for nothing.

Aye that's about the strength (?!) of it - his fragility / injury record probably also 'explains' him being (perceived as) nesh
Certainly playing at that level didn't assist him

I always like the look of Callum Brittain at MK Dons in the (admittedly brief) time I've seen him play. Only 21 and has made around 80 appearances for them already. Started out life as a right winger and has been made into a right back so he'd suit our system. As far as I can see he's coming onto the last year of his contract according to this so he should be fairly cheap:

Probably too much of a step up to us to make an immediate impact but both Chelsea and Tottenham were monitoring him about a season and a half ago so there must be something about him to suggest he's capable.

Do you harbour a secret ambition to see us relegated?

Along with the "Lee Gregory" lovers, I suspect you possibly do.

"Premiership" mate.

Best league in t' world mate.

Need TOP players to compete mate.

These aren't likely to come from Championship "surplus to requirements" lists. (I know that's what McGoldrick was - but for every McGoldrick there's a hundred Dean Hammonds).

The definition of "cheap" is needed, based on our 3rd division days, our 18th lowest Championship budget, the £170m guaranteed for next season or the £300m opportunity profit if we stay up next season.
Its all dependent on the long term plan - when the owners sort themselves out. Buying hungry Championship players for the PL might be accepting we will be relegated next season but in a stronger position to return in the 20/21 season.
