The war started in 1914 but this was the last cup final until war ended and was dubbed the khaki cup final due to all the men in uniform attending

Not me, I don't collect any memorabilia. But, one gentleman in the Carrier Bag Firm orbit has what he calls Programme Eight. That is from 1897/98, when we were Champions of Division One (ie The Premier League). That was/is (by consensus) the first season United produced match day programmes. Vol 1 No. 1 was from the Home Game v Derby County on 1 September 1897. My mate owns the programme from 29 December 1897, the Eighth Home League Game v Liverpool.

There was a lot of disquiet about the game going ahead when news of the casualties from the front started to leak out. Blades fans were prevented from welcoming their returning heroes home by the police who dispersed the crowd.

Sounds like South Yorkshire Peelers were just as bad back then as their modern day counterparts

So in 1915 we were defending cup holders with a big feel good factor sweeping the club and a world war breaks out.

In 1939 we were promoted from division 2 with the young Jimmy Hagan working his magic, our gates were up and on our return to the top flight we were sitting 2nd in division 1 after a few games.

Could we win the league?
Not a chance because the league is cancelled due to another world war broke out.

There’s a pattern here. If Wilder has us challenging Man City at the top of the PL at Christmas, then you can bet world war 3 will start.

We declared war on Germany on 4th August 1914. Many thought war would end by Xmas. FL and FA Cup matches were carried on but the longer the season went on there were more in the newspapers criticising the football clubs and the players saying that they should be fighting for the country. Coming back with the FA Cup after the cup final , the Blades players were told at the Midland station that there would be no celebrations and they were told to go straight home.

For the 1939-40 season we played three league matches before England declared war on 3rd September and then it was decided that the league got suspended
