Five of my favourite ever goals (away)

Thought I'd share some happy memories of mine. Goals against Wednesday are not included. I'm not talking about the best goals in terms of technique etc - I'm just talking about the general combination of factors that go towards creating fabulous footballing memories.

It's time to remember why I love SUFC. Must confess the dates around 2000-2002 all roll into one.

Be interested if anyone else was there and be interested in hearing others.

Deane versus Derby County 1990.
Hard to describe the joy I felt when that went in. Probably the best headed goal I have ever seen. Last minute equaliser, against Shilton and Derby could not believe it had happened.

Deane versus Leicester 1990
The best scramble ever and incredible scenes. I was just too young to fully enjoy that evening in terms of getting bladdered but will never forget that goal. Suppose I should exclude Leicester as all five could be included.

Asaba versus WBA 2002 (I think)
Must confess I can't remember the date but I can remember a backs to wall effort, huge WBA pressure against 10 men and an amazing run and shot by Pesch. Don't think I've ever seen a set of fans as pissed off as WBA were that afternoon. I can also remember The Vine boozer which had a huge Indian grill at the back. Arguably best pre-match boozer ever.

Tonge versus Wolves 2002
Correction. Wolves fans were extremely pissed off. Always nice beating them and this was very sweet in my opinion. Extremely dangerous outside and felt like sitting duks. Lucky to get a cab back to car on other side of town.

Katchouro versus Wolves
I was sat next to the divide between the home and away end. I can see now a Wolves fan pissing him self singing 'all gone quiet' after their equaliser pointing at me. Time stood still for a split second before everyone realised what Kat had done.

Honourable mentions to a Santos goal at QPR and Armstrong goal at Hull.

Glyn Hodges versus Derby (I think) 1991

Last minute winner from memory with a cracking shot - I think it may have been Hodges' debut - began to really believe we could escape relegation after the game.

Shipperley at Southampton (December 06) - made the freezing 8 hour journey worthwhile;

Bryson last minute penalty at Barnsley (late 1989) - won us game;

Enjoyed the goal at Derby this season as well - gave their fans some stick then;

Agree with GC88 re: Naughton at Huddersfield and Sharp at Barnsley recently;

Andy Gray's late penalty at Highbury in the FA Cup was sweet;

Marcelo at Coventry - Blades legend!

Morgan's overhead kick at Forest in the Cup;

The next goal we score at Upton Park;

Howard at Preston in Play Offs;

Beattie free kick at Burnley just after Blackwell took over;

Webber's stooped header at St. James' in the Premiership t'other year. Great cross from Montinho!

Some away goals really stay with me, Akinbiyi vs Pigs, Webber at Newcastle, but strangely, Ward's debut goal at Southampton last year was awesome, took the ball well, a little run and curled round the keeper right in front of the travelling blades, and it was a midweek night match. Ward's celebration really showed too how much it meant to him to score, proper passion!

Some of the ones I instantly thought of have already been mentioned, but a few that I can't see and perhaps not thought of:

Geary versus Millwall 2005

Was the usual "interesting" game where the blades are involved. Mr Muscat had got himself and Kenny sent off during half time, no keeper on the bench, so you know the drill

Looked like it was heading for a draw after Andy Liddel (I think it was) had equalised minutes after coming on....

Until the little man popped up with a rare goal sending us all mental, it helped just seeing how much the goal meant to the lad

Whitehouse versus Stockport (league Cup) 1994

Pick one of three. Was cracking for me at that time to see the blades on the right side of a high scoreline, even better to see Dane bag a hattrick. School the next morning was great

Kozluk versus Grimsby 2003

Always enjoyed our away trips to Grimsby, but any time you witness Rob Kozluk score a goal has to be special. Extra props to the ref for his part in allowing himself to be convinced not to brandish the yellow card for his celebration! Forgot who it was who talked him out of it, but think the ref was Phil Dowd.

Hodges versus Notts County 1991

Forgive me if the details are half made up on this one, the memory has probably changed itself over the years. Seem to recall it being a sweetly struck left footer from outside the box. Someone else will probably come along and correct me, but I have more vivid memories of the cages/fences still being up, standing and throwing the ball back onto the pitch

Bob Atkins at Millmoor. The greatest away goal we've ever scored.

Keith Edwards knocking himself out at Burnden Park to score a goal in a 3-1 defeat. Didn't seem it at the time but important goal as it meant we finished just ahead of Hull to get promotion.

Keith Edwards scoring a consolation goal at Ewood Park in a 6-1 defeat & everyone going mental like we'd won the cup.

brian deane at port vale 1988/89 to grab a 3-3 draw

petr katchouro in the play off semi at ipswich late 90's

michael brown at portsmouth 2003 in a 2-1 win when afterwards we dared to dream that automatic was realistic.

martin pike at blackpool 1988/89, a real bobbley goal and his first for the blades.

dane whitehouse at highbury in the cup mid 90's to get us a 1-1 draw, carl veart scored the winner in the replay.

and gotta mention sir bobby of davisons second goal of the night at hillsboro, i was up in the corner, uncovered and pissed wet through but i did'nt care one jot, what a sweet sweet night.

Keith Addy to beat Man Utd at Old Trafford about 1974. Surprising 'cos it was no big deal at the time, impossible now. I think Man U may have been relegated at the end of that season.

Asaba v WBA, 8/12/01

Got to agree with this one, but the other part to it was that just before Peschi's run and chip over Russell Hoult, Santos (I think) had cleared off the line, and it really did look from the other end that it was off the line. Not a couple of yards from, not a yard from, not o foot from, but off the line.

The lob hit both crossbar and post before coming out to Asaba to score, sparking the loudest rendition of "Jingle Bells" I've ever heard.

Zico v Southampton, 11/1/92

For the second season in a row we got off to a shoddy start, and had had a wretched solstice period, including an absolute shocker at home to Coventry. God(TM) alone knows why I went to this match, but it was one we rightly won, and Mike Lake's wonder strike from what looked like about 35 yards capped off a long, but happy (and drunken!) day.

For some reason I bought a blue Southampton away shirt. Still got it; still looks crap.

Flo v Liverpool, 2/4/94

We went into this match on a six match unbeaten run, but one which included just one win (the previous match against West Ham - Dane Whitehouse's stunner at the end of the first half), and a tough run in. Entrenched in the bottom three, conceding early at Anfield didn't inspire us.

Flo was our saviour that day (he tried his best) scoring twice as we beat them 2-1, but it's the header to the top corner which I remember. We started to believe we could get out of trouble, so it's also tinged with sadness ..... Stamford Bridge ..... thirty seconds to go ..... safe .....

Marcelo v Coventry, 7/3/98

I don't remember the goal too well actually, but the famous celebration made it noteworthy. Katchouro's late miss on an angle sticks in my mind more as action from the pitch, but had that gone in, we wouldn't have had the drama/heart attack of the replay at the Lane!

Whoever got the sixth v Luton, 3/12/94

Again, I don't remember the goal in particular, but it was the last of six in a bizarre match. We were 2-0 up at half time, and going well enough, before going 4-1 up and cruising. Luton then got a penalty befor Brian Gayle(og) scored one of the finest headers I've ever seen. Even from the other end it seemed to go like a bullet. Unfortunately it was past Kelly.

Kelly then produced a great one-on-one stop to prevent 4-4. We did go 5-3 up, but it was still windy arse time. When the sixth went in (Andy Scott?), there was a communal sigh of relief. Oh, and Kenilworth Road is a tip.

In no order

1. Webber verses Watford - Premiership
We absolutely battered Watford in the second half with Nade missing a hatful of chances but in a way, due to his good work in the build up to missing these sitters he endeared himself to me. We really needed to win to pull ourselves off the bottom 2 places, in the dying few minutes from a set piece Webber scrambles it over the line (offside!). Que wild celebrations.

2. Monty verses Crewe - 2004ish
Similiar to the first one, battered them all game despite being down to 10 men and Ashton missing a pen. Forte played a blinder, we needed a win to put pressure on the top 2 and Monty bumbled one in towards the end.

3. Sharp verses Barnsley - 2008
Barnsley were in the middle of their FA Cup run (dismal league run) and we were on the up 7K Blades following the team, wet windy and snowy in the second half. Speed hit the post and it somehow didn't bounce in, then Sharpy whelled one in. Blackwell said after the game he'd have paid 4 million for Billy Sharp.

4. Browny V Forest Play Offs
After Johnson had scored, it seemed like we'd be let down at the semi final stage like we were in the fa cup and league cup. Then Browny I think went on a run in the box and was taken out and slotted the penalty away to shut up the trees.

5. Peschisolidio V WBA 2000?
It was his debut, Ruel Fox put them 1-0 up early in the second half, then Peschi broke free, shot, I think it hit the bar and he followed it in against Brian Jenson (who seemed about 40 in age and 40 stone in weight at the time!). Ginner Hughes scored late on.

Honourable mentions to Stead at Blackburn, Andy Gray at Preston on the final day of the season and Brian Howard at Preston in the play offs.

That was the goal that immediately sprung to mind when I saw the thread title.

Ullathorne was the sending off I think?

My memories of that goal include Pesch coming on to deafening chants of 'You're shit, and your wife's a slag' from all round the Hawthorns and some daft bleeder called Micalijo taking me over the seats in front in a passionate embrace :hug:

How good did the trout look on the barbeque? :fishy:

3 great away goals not mentioned above that I was lucky enough to see:

Tony Agana vs Huddersfield, FA Cup 3rd Round 7/1/89

- took the ball in the "channel" with his back to goal on the right; spun round and bent the ball into the top right hand corner to win us the game. What a strike.

Franz Carr vs Ipswich PL 22/2/94

- On a bitterly cold and snowy night. Carr collected the ball outside the area and planted it into the roof of the net from fully 30 yards. sadly we lost 3-2.

Ben Doane v Crewe, Div 1 30/3/02

- volley into the top right hand corner from at least 25 yards. Keeper (Clayton Ince?) should've done better, but it was a cracking shot and it was a true pleasure to see Doane score, having first seen him play as an 8 year old in United's kids coaching scheme!

This was one of my favourites. We dicked Wolves all game and appeared to have done enough to beat us when David White stuck one in after about 70 minutes. Then Michael Vonk handled the ball in the last minute. Wolves scored the pen and (as Micalijo) pointed out they started ribbing us. 'It's all gone quiet over there'. Then suddenll we were attacking and Kat had the ball, he made a fool of Dean Richards 9then being tapped us as possible England centre back) and smakced it (in off both posts). I was behind the goal and remember running to the front of the stand and going absolutelt mental.

This was also fantastic. That night was my favouite ever as a Blades fan. After drawing 1-1 at the Lane we'd been totally written off. Ipswich were in form and much fancied. I remember 2'000 Blades outsinging 20'000 Ipswich fans. That goal was early on. Kat went clean through and smashed it past their keeper. It hit the underside of the bar and bounced down (just) over the line. I was directly in line with the goal posts and it was clear it was a goal. Credit to the linesman as he was well positioned and gave the goal.

Not a classic goal, but capped of a great night. It was fucking freezing at Crewe in that poky stadium of theirs. Monty deserved an MBE for bravery for this goal. He threw himself in for a challenge and got his head to the ball first to get decked by their keeper. He was down injured for ages after the goal whilst we all celebrated!?

Others that stand out to me:

Marcelo's injury time winner away at Notts County in 1999.

We were trailing 3-1 at Meadow Lane (in the FA cup) with 5 minutes to go and went on to win 4-3 after extra time. We had been pans all game and County deserved to go through. We pulled it back to 3-3 and marcelo's goal in extra time to win it was sweet. For the life of me I can't remeber details of the goal but I remember going mad after he'd stuck it in. Even made the visit to Nottingham enjoyable.

Any of the goals in the 5-2 win at Charlton last year. None of them specifically stand out, but if I had to pick one it would be the 5th. I just remeber going nuts behind the goal because my team had stuck 5 in oon an away day.

Jack Lester equaliser against Wigan (2003)

Wigan were high flying that year and went 1-0 up at some point. It was a cold night, but Jack Lester warmed us up with a screamer in the last minute to bring things level. We were luckly to get a point (we'd played well but rarely threatened) until LKester smashedit in off the bar in the last minute. I was with a couple of mates (not Blades fans) form uni (I was at Liverpool at the time) and I remeber them looking a little perplexed as I was jumping up and down hugging some random old bloke at the side of me.

The Asaba one at WBA gets it for me. I was living near Worcester at the time and had come by train (which I'd left my coat on) - so after the game had to stand on the southbound platform in red and white stripes surrounded by well pissed off baggies!!

Scarey - but worth it!!!

Hatton!!!!!! - its Bob Atkins!! and someone above has.

The Littlejohn goal was on 9/1/93 and came in the last minute in a game we were losing 1-0 and where, if there had been any justice, we should have been losing 5-0 (Kelly had a blinder). The goal came from a long kick from Kelly, the Arsenal CB misjudged the bounce, it went over his head and LJ was on to it like a shot, sending a stunning half volley past Seamen. As I recall it that was our only shot all game...

Typical quality free kick into the top corner. I think it may have drew us level in injury time which made it all the better

As mentioned Zico's V Southampton would be in there as well. Didn't he score another scorcher in that game?
