We're incredibly lucky to have a guy of his quality, his composure and his delivery and for the price we paid. He's a fantastic footballer.

What were Huddersfield/Reading/Brighton thinking letting him go? And Fulham not signing him?

We'll give him the PL chance he deserves.

Not me btw - but we are going to have to have players like Norwood/Fleck step up a level if it's possible.

Surely we've learnt our lesson writing players off before they've kicked a ball in anger in the division above from our own experience in the past 2 years?

And out of interest... why? He has all the attributes a midfielder should need to thrive at this level. Much worse midfielders than Norwood have had distinguished premier league careers.

I’ll be more than happy to be wrong on this.

My view stems from one specific “flaw” I see. Repeatedly unfortunately.

Give Norwood time on the ball and he can and often is devastating.

On top of which, his dead ball delivery is impressive.

That said, press him and his propensity to be both less effective and, even worse, turning over possession in dangerous areas of the pitch is both concerning and frustrating.

With the quality we will be up against in the PL, these ricks will rarely go unpunished. It’s an unrelenting division.

Ultimately I can see Wilder dropping the Coutts / Norwood deep lying quarter back role for a more defensive minded player. I believe you mentioned Obi-Mikel recently and while I’m not 100% sure of this individual, I believe your thinking is along the right lines. I wouldn’t dismiss OM btw if Wilder believes he would “fit” in terms of character (which is where my doubt stems rather than the ability to do the job).

Interesting times given the squad turnover now apparent after yesterday :).

Hardly anyone tackles you in your own half in the Premier League, not when you're building. He'll get plenty of time on the ball.

I'm generally at Premier League games when we're away, and it definitely seems a bit less chaotic than our matches ever did. Of course it could just be because the players are better at it, but it definitely seemed a little slower.

I watch a lot of PL football, and my view is, as you're building from the back, if the opposition aren't within a few yards of the first ball, it's pretty rare they keep pressing you in and around your box if you switch play (say from JOC to Bash or Stevens to Bash), usually preferring to get into a better position to attack you quickly or to defend against you than chase the ball. A few teams really press like Liverpool, but a lot are more cautious/set up to counter once you've commited men forwards.

I don't think the level chaos and speed of the game are related:

From what I've seen, in the PL, players pass faster, press faster and run faster. (Unless they are instructed to do otherwise for tactical purposes)

I think the same could largely be said about the championship personally.

Point is, he won't get a drastically different amount of time on the ball in deep positions. The mistakes get punished more often though, like West Brom at home.
 
There’s a myth that the premier league allows players more time.
This ain’t true.
The players closing you down and putting your touch under pressure are much quicker in thought and movement.

So he will need to up his game even further folks.
I hope he’s up to it...and that goes for the rest of them too

We could get more, we could get less.

My point being that saying the championship is faster than the PL isn't really true.

Teams won't fear us, they'll press us quickly and try to force mistakes. It won't be like this year where about two thirds of the league simply sit back and let us play, because they know they can't beat us at our own game.

Virtually every side will fancy themselves to beat us at our own game, and they'll really come at us. This may or may not work in our favour, and I fully expect a few tonkings, but it's our job to stamp our authority by being the better team, regardless of how others play against us.

If you're worrying about Oli getting pressed when in possession , what about Flecky , who's game is not at all based on keeping it & picking out a pass ? Fleck is a box to box tackler , dispossesser , quick forward passer or the occasional drive forward. He will be even less likely than Oli to retain the ball for more than a second or two. But he's still useful. For these reasons - if CW continues to take my advice as he's done over the past 3 years - he will recruit a proven Prem quality MF who is capable of pausing + picking out a pass , despite being pressed by the opposition. Oli will be the new guy's understudy and if he studies assiduously , he will become an able replacement when needed. This pattern of "acquire quality whilst the current players get up to speed" should be repeated around various key positions in the team.

it's not . it's because of the refereeing. you can't run around booting people in the Prem as the players are too valuable so players seem to get into position rather than making rash challenges

That makes no sense.
 
He’ll be a different kind of player than what we currently think of him, but think he will continue to be vital for us. I think the level that he came in with, spraying passes everywhere, and just looking ten times the footballer of anyone else on the pitch maybe caused us to overlook his other abilities. He’s just a clever player, his positioning is excellent, and his defensive work is underrated; maybe not his tackling but he’s constantly in the right place to intercept, and if not, is well versed in the tactical foul. On top of that, our set pieces are likely to have a large say in whether we can stay up or not, and that’s another box he can tick (the crossing side rather than the shooting).

He’ll be vital for us next year, just in a little bit different way than what we’ve come to expect. Can’t wait to see him in the Prem.

You're confused, I think you're getting me mixed up with someone else:

At no point have I said Ollie Norwood won't do well.

All I said is that I don't think the championship is faster than the PL.
