All the released players have played a big part over the last two seasons but Couttsy, in particular, made a huge difference both last season and in the League One winning season. It's very unfortunate that he suffered the injury and then was replaced, but that's football. It happened to the likes of Brian Smith, Peter Duffiled and Simon Webster off the top of my head all those years ago but I appreciate they are not in the class of Paul Coutts.

He was the most influential of a midfield the likes of which we could only dream of previously.

That midfield is what made us special and set off this remarkable rise.

Had that injury not happened we would have at least made the play offs with ease. He was in his pomp and looked every inch a PL player.

I hope he gets a good move now because I'm confident that with playing time he can get back to a high level.

Paul Coutts, Martin Cranie, Conor Washington, Daniel Lafferty and Caolan Lavery will all leave Bramall Lane when their current deals expire this summer.

Leon Clarke, Jake Wright, Ched Evans, Samir Carruthers, Nathan Thomas, Ben Heneghan and Ricky Holmes have all been placed on the transfer list, despite still being under contract.

Meanwhile, Dean Henderson, Kieran Dowell, Scott Hogan, Gary Madine and Marvin Johnson will all return to their parent clubs following the completion of their loan deals.

Whether he’s going to get the mobility back to be able to do the job again at Championship level is debatable (maybe even doubtful) but I wish him all the best.

We've had one hell of a journey this past 3 years. Who knows where it will all end. Paul Coutts, however, was genesis to it all. Everything we now enjoy watching traces back to him coming back in from the cold and literally stamping his foot on the ball and saying *this* is how we now play football.

I've literally never been this gutted to see a player leave the lane.

Brown, Jags, Beattie, Morgan and Murphy leaving were all painful but Coutts going is really hard to bare.

I'm sure it's the best for him, and possibly best for the club but, emotionally speaking, it feels wrong.

Coutts in league 1 and the start of last season was the most assured player I'd ever seen for United. His touch, awareness and vision made him look head and shoulders above everyone. A joy to watch.

Thanks for everything Paul Coutts - you are class personified.

He's had a massive influence on our resurgence. Alongside Basham, Sharp and Freeman (+ anyone else?) he was there when we were shit and saw the Wilder revolution from the beginning, including getting transfer listed 3 years ago. Sad to see him go as he could have been back at his best with a preseason behind him but we're not in a position where we can risk the uncertainty of that.

Rolls Royce is absolutely spot on (if I could use the quote button properly Rudders your quote from the first page would be above!). For those of us who have played football, and think we know what a quality footballer looks like and who we'd have like to have been like in a perfect world, for me the way Paul Coutts played was exactly that. Everything that I love about football. A beautiful 'proper' footballer when he was fully fit. The Pirlo of Bramall Lane. The less ginger South Yorkshire equivalent of Paul Scholes. Either way, an absolute pleasure to watch conduct the game. He'll always be one of my favourite all time Blades (alongside Brown in centre midfield (Hammond only made the bench)).

You can have the best coaches and manager in the world but if you don’t have the players to do what you want then you’ll never achieve it.

I think he knew (either officially or just a hunch) that the end was near. When we beat Ipswich and the team were walking around with their kids and waving to the crowd, Coutts spent a bit longer than most of the others, walking around the pitch and having a good look at the place, like "one last look".

A great player when fully fit and a great servant to the club.

Coutts, Fleck and Duffy, streets ahead of any other trio in our League One promotion campaign.
