I've just received an email from a Sunderland fan asking for the support of United fans in this issue. Obviously, we only have one side of the story, but I've included it below so you can make your own minds up.

Now some people will be asking why should we care?

Well, many travelling fans, myself included, have on a few occasions seen some bizarre, petty and disgusting behaviour by Police and stewards.

Some fans are idiots, and deserve what they get. But many fans aren't, yet are still subjected to the same abuses.

The FSF campaign for football fans, not to get special treatment, but to be afforded the treatment that should be ours by rights as law abiding citizens of this country.

And now for the mere suspicion of being involved in trouble, just because the Police say so, Sunderland are banning fans.

The links are below:

During pre season Sunderland fans attended a match against Hearts. Fans obviously booked up the trains early travelling from Newcastle and back as there are no direct trains from Sunderland. However at half time it was announced there was a football special going directly to Sunderland. For some fans this would save them a journey on the metro through Newcastle. However the train did not go to Sunderland it instead went to Newcastle and on their arrival into Newcastle the platform was full of Northumbria Police (Sunderland a few years back became part of Tyne and Wear and is policed by Northumbria). The police then claim that they were attacked by the fans and their dogs and officers were injured.

The fans claim they were surrounded by police and pushed by those at the back to move forward and the hit by police batons by the police at the front. Several Sunderland fans were hospitalised including dog bites to the stomach and one fan with over 30 stables [sic] to a head wound following hits by batons. One fan was left unattended for several minutes by the police despite bleeding from the head. Freedom of information requests have shown that no police dog or officer was injured despite the police publishing pictures of injured dogs in the media. The police have refused to publish the CCTV from the train station and the IPCC investigated the incident without speaking to any of the fans. A link to a you tube clip of this has been attached as has a piece on the local bbc news and a timeline of events as published by the FSF.

So why a petition?

No-one has been charged despite the police holding and not releasing the CCTV from the station. Around 40 fans have been arrested and all have been freed on bail. Sunderland have now said it is club policy to ban any supporter arrested for football-related violence or disorder. However this only was enforced this week when the incident happened in August. I believe and I hope you do as well that we are all innocent until proven guilty and that this ban should be over turned. I ask you and your fellow supporters to show some solidarity with the Sunderland fans affected by this banning and sign the petition asking Niall Quinn and the club to overturn this banning.

It happens all too often that the Old Bill pile in heavy handed just to dish out a kicking.

One day the coppers will be acting all Muhammed I'm Hard Bruce Lee and end up getting the beating of a lifetime.

"...a supporter laying on the ground being attended to by other supporters, police officers don't seem overly quick to come to his aid and several supporters have purported it took them 3 or 4 minutes to come to his aid....."

Make your mind up, Ms Jacks and next time you speak to any policeman or woman, ask them what normally happens to a police officer when, in a similar situation they go to help someone. They probably say that they are very likely to be attacked themselves even when trying to help.

I do agree thought football fans should be treated like human beings rather than animals but it would help our cause if some football fans stopped acting like animals on matchdays

Bloody football fans. Racist thugs the lot of em. They'll no more get my support than my boot up their bloody arses. Stick em all in the bloody army and send them to Afstanislav or wherever, that'd smarten their ideas up, picking on innocent coppers like that. They wouldn't be so bloody tough when the talli-ho....taffyban......er....bloody talliban were shooting them rocket lapelled grenades at them...

Sorry mate. We've got no support for our own manager & players round these parts so can't see them supporting Sunderland fans.

Bornonshoreham, STOP referring to football thugs as animals. The majority of animals are nice natured! Football hooligans are the opposite.
The reference to animals verses football hooligans pisses me off "BIG TIME"!

Going back a long time now but in the late 70's a well known Unitedite and friend of mine was bitten by a police dog on John Street walking to the game. The police panicked and arrested him ,then got together and made up a story about him attacking the dog etc etc. I was with him and can honestly say even now that he did nothing at all. He was found guilty in court and sent to prison for a stretch. Different times I know ,with no cameras ,football fans were scum and he is black ,but it affected me so much that even now I would never trust the police.

Funnily enough a similar thing happened to me and my mate against of all teams Sunderland!!
We had just come off the kop and there appeared to be some trouble at the corner of Shoreham st and John st. We were only 14/15 or so at the time.A copper on a police horse came riding up and down the street waving and lashing out with his baton. He smacked my mate right on the head (we were young kids for fuck sake petrified and trying our best to get home) the gash was massive and required stitches.
A couple of years later when I was in the 6th form I had been taking photographs of the school cross country at the request of the headmaster. As I was walking about 200 yards from school a police riot van stopped (they had been on strike duty during the steel strike) and a copper got out and asked me where i'd nicked the camera from.
When I said it was the schools he called me a lying little bastard and punched me in the face followed by a kick in my balls. No copper got out to stop him,but stood watching about 50 yards away was my headteacher and 3 or 4 other teachers who witnessed it.
My head was straight down to Ecclesfield police station to report it.
I was never asked for my version of what happened but I was called into the heads office sometime later to be told that the policeman had either lost his job through the incident or been reprimanded,I cannot remember which it was.
I have to say if my 15 year old lad came home and said a copper had had a go at him for no reason I would believe my son going on my experiences.

Hattrick,

Me and mate alighting at Sheffield station - day of Spurs v Wolves Semi at the Sty. Mate opens door and jumps off as train pulls in. Grabbed by police and marched to wall with arms up back and details taken. Got summons a couple of weeks later which stated that when he alighted the door hit a woman and knocked her over.
