I decided to have a look for the date of the Edwards diving header at Burnden Park. I knew it was a Monday but never thought it was May Day.
It turns out that 21st April was the day at Rotherham when we witnessed Bob Atkins score that absolute cracker.
Was there mate at Bolton that day, we took firms old clapped out minibus, nutty norman got lost getting there. We found somewhere to park up got to ground and it was just a mass of red and white trying to get in. We went in the stand, blades end was to our left, kicked off good style in bottom corner of stand as notlobs ran from kop to get at all the blades in that corner of the stand, whole lot when flying...drinks, chairs the whole kit and kaboodle...then the tuesday night that hull went to burnley, hull needed to win by a argin of 3 goals I think, they went 2 up very quickly, was glued to the radio for that..quite a few blades went to that game as well

My Uncle talks to this day about the amount of fancy dress on the away end where we were stood.
The Burnley match, I went out playing footy or trainspotting before coming back to listen to the game on the radio.
As it turned out, King Keith scoring that goal did the job.

We certainly thought it had all gone wrong, Edwards goal was just a scrappy consolation and he also went off too.

I remember the 1983/84 promotion season, amongst other things, for our final match being as unusually flat as you could imagine for a promotion season.

We played Newport at the Lane, and were just 1 point ahead of Hull who had 2 games left, with us having seemingly thrown it away with 2 consecutive defeats to Wimbledon and Bolton. The gate v Newport was 6,000 down on the gate v Wimbledon, which was a fair barometer of the mood. I'm not sure many believed it would swing in our favour.

I don't recall United really going for it either. We won 2-0 (Edwards and Arnott) but it was all a bit routine and felt academic until after the final whistle when we then found out that Hull had only drawn at Bristol Rovers, I think. No constant score updates from other games in those days. Even then, though, my recollection is of a feeling, leaving the ground, of disappointment that we hadn't really gone for it against Newport and put the goal difference out of reach.

Unless you took a radio to the match you had to rely on that guy changing those score cards at the Bramall Lane end. The ones in the programme that had match A, match B etc. When did that finish?

Remember that season like yesterday RD ,away days at Lincoln, Rothm Oxford amongst some that sprin* to mind & several other great away trips with the lads think I only missed 3 games that season , Yeh we all thought we’d fucked it after the 3-1 defeat at Bolton only to find Bristol Rovers had won 2-0 at Hull . Off to Burnley on the Tuesday night for to watch one of the most nerve wracking games of my life . Hull were already 1-0 up by the time we got in , 90 minute onslaught and Roger Hansbury had a blinder to keep it at 2-0 .. when the final whistle blew I think I had chewed down to my knuckles .
After several celebratory pints outside the boozer while reminding passing fishy folk of the score .. happy days

No, a few hours after our 3-1 defeat at Bolton, already relegated Port Vale surprisingly beat Hull 1-0. Bristol Rovers held Hull to a scoreless draw on the Saturday (see below)

Our response to King Keith's goal was muted. I think we were three down and Edwards scored a consolation. No one realised at the time how significant that goal would be come the end of the season. We thought we'd blown it.

He didn't just head it in but also bent the goalpost as well, as he headed both the ball and the post, hence being subbed, as we know now that header eventually took us up, I know a lot of people don't like him (perhaps saying don't like is a bit harsh) when he does the co comentating on our matches and some might say he upsets the footballing gods and tempts fate, but I can forgive that...still and always be a blades hero and legend.

P.S Keeef be careful of what you say during the game on monday if co comentating, thanks from 30,000 blades :)

Agree with what you posted, except for one point. Edwards was kicked in the face by the Bolton defender as he headed it in, no contact with the post. I had a 83-84 league annual that season and I distinctly remember it having a picture inside of that moment and he was definately getting kicked in the chops.

I was at Bolton and Rotherham

At Bolton I started drinking early and had no sleep the night before so was absolutely shattered

I fell asleep for a short time when Bolton went 2-0 up and woke up about 1 minute before Edwards scored but we were already 3-0 down by that time

Little did we know the importance of that goal at the time

Cheers mate thanks for correction, from where we were in the stand and everything i heard since though (and looked like)t he had collided with post, mind you we were dogdging seats, bodies, beer cups the odd dog sailing past us into orbit... whilst still trying to watch the game and talk about einsteins theory of relativity...

I remember the Wimbledon home game well, it is the only time I have ever cried about a football match, I was convinced we were not going up. I did think about that game (and the fact that we went on to win promotion) when we let in the last minute goal to Millwall last week. At the age of 45 I managed to avoid bursting into tears this time!

We were stood on the main stand side at Millmoor, near the edge of the box at the opposite end of the ground. Good bit of work, turn and shot in nearly one go. Tremendous stuff, cue big celebrations.

Remember it well. I was a youngish lad on the Railway End that day and the roof so.ost came off when Bobby Atkins has his moment of magic in front of the Blades in the last minute. Quality goal. Mind u, he didn't do a great deal else except grow a beard whilst with us.

Remember my heart sinking when Edwards went off with 15 to go a d we desperately needed the win. We were trapped on a tight powdery pitch and it didn't suit us at all. And then BA popped up with a very late winner. Lovely.

Crazy day that one.

So much trouble in the ground before, during and after the game. United were awful. I remember being stood on that big open terrace behind the goal when Edwards scored. Loads of fans slagging him off for getting injured for a meaningless goal. In the end it was the 1 goal that saw us promoted.

I have a recollection that Hull played later than us that day and also had a bad result which we only found out about getting off the train back in Sheffield. The lad in front of me started dancing down the station platform and this copper dragged him to the side and started whacking him. I was only a kid and couldn't believe my eyes.

I remember that game at Bolton very well , we came home from it very deflated believing that we had blown it . Nobody really thought there was a chance that Hull would slip up against already relegated Port Vale, but that they did & we were back in it. It was all very reminiscent of
the current situation. Though I hope we don't have to go through anything like that night when Hull went to Burnley for the last game & Marwood put them 2-0 up in no time at all, & needing to win by 3 to deny us we had to live through 70 minutes of hell!

We (me and elder brother Rotherham fan) were in the main stand about level with the box near our fans. My Brother tried to calm me down when we scored then realised there were a stack more Blades near us.

I bow to your superior memory SB , I remember the despondency after the Bolton defeat only to find we’d got out of jail , as posted on here no one realised how important Edwards goal would be after that nerve racking night a
