We are moving in different circles mate. We are now a Championship club on the verge of the Premiership. Not a League 1 side stuck there for 6 years. The bar for the entry level to the first team has been raised considerably.
I don’t know what the stats are, but I’d guess less than 5% of Academy players at our club ever go on to make a career in professional football. That’s probably similar for most clubs outside of the top 6 teams in the country.
Think back to that wonderful FA Youth Cup Final with Man Utd a few years ago. How many of those players actually went on to make a career in the game? Some obvious ones did, like Harry Maguire. But it’s a minority. Joe Ironside is at Nuneaton last I heard.
The most outstanding player throughout those two games was Ravel Morrison of Man Utd (imo). I thought he’d be the next Gascogne for England. He lost his way and is now somewhere in the Nordics.
It’s really, really tough.
But, if you can unearth one Harry Maguire or one David Brooks every 5 years it will pay for us to have a team capable of getting back to the top flight of football.
That’s why it’s important and that’s why you should be a bit more patient perhaps?
