Could be the defining point in our season.

Let’s talk about it.

Who’s to blame? I’m not gonna put all the blame on Johnson, he’s run from the halfway line with the ball untracked and unmarked - but that excuse of a block on the edge of the 18 yard box is the worst bit of defending I’ve seen since we got promoted.

Discuss.

Does it matter ? Players and managers make errors. That's football. What happened has happened. Time to move on for the next game

Why ? Its happened. Its been debated to death in various threads. If anyone is to blame it is Wilder for making the bizarre substitution .
There are seven games to go. Time to move on .
You don’t move on without dissecting the error.

The error has been dissected. Wilder fucked up. Wilder will know he fucked up. Wilder won't make the same mistake again
I'm no critic of Wilder but this isn't the first time he's brought Johnson on as a sub to costly effect, and we don't know it'll be the last. You're attempting to shut down debate but this happened at Rotherham and he didn't learn. Watch Johnson's marking for their 2nd goal and watch that tackle for the 3rd. That's a player who either doesn't look particularly committed to the team or isn't happy with being played in that position.

The disruption caused to the left side of our defence once JOC left the pitch HAS to come under scrutiny in view of how both their 2nd and 3rd goals developed.

Bold statement, but if JOC stays on, we don’t lose the game.

CW does make some strange decisions, even starting line-ups! Looking back at the match video both goals were Johnson’s fault/ lack of marking/ awareness/ concentration whatever you want to call it? Their were murmures all around the ground when Johnson came on for JackO, but CW confirmed afterwards that he brought him on to run down the wing and try and win the game, when perhaps we should have done the obvious change, straight swap for Stearman?

I don’t get Wilder when he says that, we were already winning the game 2-1 and they scored about 2 minutes after he came on. Wilder also got Coutts out ready to come on only to sit him back down, he also did this to someone else, both these occurring before the Johnson substitution does raise a few questions for the interviewer to ask him, one of the questions being did he know the score before he brought Johnson on. :)

Yer good point :/

I obviously love Wilder to bits but you do have to ask the question of whether he was thinking properly under the pressure and circumstances of the game, just to find out his thinking behind it?

Cant see the problem here - We lost JOC and Stevens went into his position. Johnson is the usual go to left sided player in situations like this.

Wilder doesn't appear to, in any circumstance, play an unbalanced team- hence Johnson coming on.

Johnson was brought in to be a squad player - that's what happened, with an injury yesterday.

the fact that he is not good enough for his level is a different matter - but that is the market we were in last summer and why Johnson was brought in.

Wilder kept a balanced team - which didn't work out - that's the way it worked out.

If truth be known, we'd lost midfield in the FIRST half and the change of Dowell for Hogan didn't resolve the problem. We had problems well before Johnson came on.

For me, Duffy was a massive miss yesterday - he would have held it up between our retreating midfield and our slightly isolated forwards.

We just have to put it behind us and move on.

It wouldn’t just be Wlder’s decision, he’d have discussed the substitution with Knill at the very least surely? For that reason I don’t think it was anything to do with pressure, more like they both overestimated what Johnson is capable of defensively (again). Square pegs will always bite you in the bum eventually, replace O’Connel like for like and I think we’d have got a draw or even held on for a streaky win. Cranie or Strearman wouldn’t have left the bloke unmarked for their second and for their third they’d have taken him out for a free kick at worst.

Managers always over think things and Wilder is no different occasionally, the good news is Wilder only over thinks it occasionally.

The last time he did it was in the last 10 minutes at Villa

I've never understood why a manager seeing his team winning and doing ok feels the need to change the system
Change individual players for fresh legs, yes, but changing the whole system and balance of the team that up to that point have done ok/well/very well is just plain mental.

Wilder doesn't do it very often which is a blessing, unlike some managers that can't help but bring an extra defender on when they go 1-0 up

I mean, what do they think is going to happen ?

Can’t disagree with much of that but he did say he wanted to go for the win and that’s why he brought Johnson on when we were already winning and that’s what I’m ultimately questioning, GB.

Stearman on for JOC
Steven's stays in his usual position, the balance of the team is exactly the same.
Not sure what Wilder is thinking when giving Johnson a defensive job to do, he's let everyone down in this role every single time he's been given it

I am not disagreeing with you on that and for me I could have seen Crainie coming on - my point is that Wilder never loses the balance in the team, hence Johnson. That's his decision made at the time - not with hindsight which is what happens on here after a game when things have not quite gone to plan.

It was something Warnock didn't worry about - Wilder simply doesn't do it.

We simply have to move on to two difficult away games - same as Leeds.

is very accurate in almost all of your points Sir !

Nobody but Wilder is to blame for yesterday. Hideous substitution.

Ah yes I wondered what he was on about when he said that as well mate. He backed it up by saying it might have upset some but I’m always going to go for a win (or words to that effect), but as you say we were 2-1 up at the time and I’d normally expect him to tighten things up if anything and try to see the game out. It’s hard to believe that Knill or one of the staff wouldn’t question it though isn’t it?

I suppose what’s even more surprising about the decision is that even before O’Connel’s injury we were hard pressed, it wasn’t like we were well on top and coasting to victory. After we scored the second I fully expected him to bring Cranie on, move Bash into the middle and maybe sub Norwood as well, but he basically weakened a defence that was already hard pushed and did nothing at all to shore up the midfield that was obviously struggling. He’ll know he messed and learn from his mistakes though.

Just watched the highlights back for the first time, Johnson's attempt at a tackle was atrocious. In that position, he's either got to get the ball or take the man and give away a freekick in my view
