Way before my time but anyone who dons the gloves over 300 times must have been a fine 'keeper indeed, one of many great custodians, a position in which we have been blessed over the years. A fine innings deserving of a rousing send off. RIP Ted, and well played.

If I’d had to guess, I would have thought he was already no longer with us, 92 was a good innings.

According to Wikipedia, he was 5’ 7”, Hodgy would have towered above him at 5’ 9”

After he left us, he played on until he was almost 40, with over 200 games for Rochdale, a proper lower league club, I wonder if they’ll be aware of his demise?

I saw him a few times before Hodgy took over, and remember his athleticism. My one specific memory of him is an odd one: v Rotherham, United were doing the warm-up shooting in at the Lane End, and then had to swap ends to start the game. The ref blew the whistle too early, and Burgin was just running into the penalty area as a Rotherham player shot from distance. It seemed as if the whole Kop yelled out, and he turned round and saved the ball. That was the good news. We went on to lose 7-2 (seven-two, just to confirm). RIP

I did - many times. He was sometimes known as "the cat" because of his athleticism, though I think he sometimes played to the crowd. Great keeper, though.

Never saw him but remember the name and by all accounts was a good keeper and great servant to the club. RIP and condolences to the loved ones he leaves behind.

But...once again, do we have to have this round of applause during the game to show our respects? Why not put his photo up on the screen at half-time and make an announcement? That would be far more respectful and less disruptive to the game.

Because he had a habit of shitting in the neighbours gardens and burying it?

I guess he was part of a different era, when football was no more glamorous or financially beneficial than many other professions.

Players like Ted we’re undoubtedly gifted athletes who entertained & whom people paid to watch, however unlike the pampered superstars of today, Ted and countless others of his generation left the game virtually penniless.

Was in the 1954 World Cup squad: the first Blades player to make a squad.

He should definitely have played in that tournament . Instead , he was understudy to Gil Merrick of Birmingham who had never been that great but was, by then , way past his best .

Burgin on the other hand was at the peak of his career and I remember being really pissed off that he didn't get a game , particularly since Merrick let in howlers both in the first round and in the quarter final against Uruguay .

RIP Ted - one of a line of very fine keepers the Blades have been blessed with over the years .

PS I suppose one reason that he was a hero of mine was because I used to stand at the railings directly behind the goal as a nipper.

RIP Ted- I'm particularly sad as I saw him in almost every home game since he signed in the late 1940's. Ironically, I named him as my favourite ever Blade (along with Jimmy Hagan) in my first post, on this forum ,only last week.
As an earlier poster said he was very agile and ,I would say, flamboyant (jealous owls used to say he was too showy).
He, certainly,was small for a keeper but seemed to dive prodigious distances through the air (without losing his flat cap) and always exuded confidence. A travesty that he didn't get any caps for England (in 1954 World Cup squad but not selected). He was very popular with the Blades supporters and ,I'm sure, that many supporters , now departed , had him as their favourite player. He and Jimmy were the undoubted stars of the team.
Thanks Ted for the great memories. A real hero and a super Blade.

PS- me too Broomhill- we could well have stood alongside each other- I presume you were at the Kop end. My first League match was in the 1947-48 season but I saw a few friendlies during the War. No, I was not there when the bomb went through the roof.
