Before my time but he was along with Jimmy Hagan my Dads favourite player

RIP Ted my Dear Dad will be collecting your autograph all over again

PPS again- yes, IsawjoeShaw. I agree with you regarding Gil Merrick. Also, thanks Walthamstow for that newspaper article. I posted my above posts before I had read that.
Yes, originaltrueblade. I suspect there will be more than your dad.

RIP Ted ... as one poster has already stated one of a long list of quality custodians at the Lane.

A great servant to the club and a big part of Sheffield United's history.

God bless Mr Burgin and deepest condolences to your family and friends.

.Rest In Peace Mr Burgin. Goalie of my first memorable team, Furness, Cox, Hitchen, Latham, Shaw J, Ringstead, Brook, Browning, Hagan, Hawksworth. Remember Ted's speed of thought, action and agility combined with his bravery made him well loved by most Blades including myself. As a ten year old all that must have registered because I volunteered to play in goal for school as no one else would do it. A memory from January 1st 1951, Bury away wet miserable day(in more ways than one). United attacking, hoof ball out of Burys defence landing in Burgin's area, easy collection till Fred Furness attempts to head away. Skims off top of head straight in net before Ted Burgin can blink. 1-0 loss. Am I right in believing he approached United to play for them? Thought I'd read he literally knocked on Bramall Lane door knowing they had ageing 'keepers.

Fantastic photo and article. The Cat and Tank as Howard Johnson was known where we stood

Yes, XM657, that is the team that seemed to play, unchanged , week after week. Without checking on internet, I can't really recall any other player appearing regularly. Maybe, Howard Johnson, now and then , for Latham. Although I seem to remember Jimmy (Hagan) at number 10 and Harold (Brook) at number 8 ,from time to time. From memory that is the team which beat Arsenal (1-0) in a 1951 Cup tie , at the Lane , in front of 51,000 +. Len Browning scored with a header in front of a delerious Kop. I was sitting in the upper tier of the old cricket pavilion. Where you there?
As I type a Doncaster fan is talking, on Football Heaven, about Ted Burgin having signed for Donny , from Blades, after Man. Utd had signed Harry Gregg (Munich Survivor later) from Donny.
I guess you may be around my age(old) judging by your Avatar photo- if that is you. We had to wait about 5 minutes whilst the photographer fired up the phosphorous and then disappeared under a blanket.

PS- now Brian (well known ) on Football Heaven is just praising Ted Burgin . He asked Andy Giddins, "What appeared in the back of United's net, every match, after 2 or 3 minutes, when Ted was in goal ?" Andy, laconically, replied,"The Ball."
(Cheeky but funny). Maybe , if Andy knew how revered Ted was he would not have said that. Anyway, the answer was, "About 30 packets of Chewing gum."

Yes,after Hagan he was my favourite Player. Often he would get into bigger fowards and punch the ball some distance
The pitch was muddy in those days. . Burgin had words with an attacker and the next time they both went up for the ball, Ted.on the refs blind side shoved a mud pat into
the face of his opponent

RIP TED

Any one remember the picture taken away game at West Ham with the picture capture saying flying high and booked for England.

Might still have the newspaper cutting filed somewhere along with my other Blades information.

RIP Ted, you were a great keeper as Broomhill Blade said being part of the famous defence at the time
One of my all time greats, and what an age.

Alan Hodgkinson replaced him but it took many of us a long time imho and others to accept he was better than Burgin, but the game had moved on then..
Mentioned he fell out with Joe Mercer who even managed to fall out with Jimmy Hagan and if memory serves me correct replaced Joe Shaw with Malcolm Barrass from Bolton.
Ted Burgin truly stood out with Blades, great keeper who would always be on my list of the good quality of keepers and as in the case of Joe Shaw never got the England recognition which he fully deserved.

Was also the Uncle of a lad in my school class who lived on Warminster Road.

I had heard that he was still alive, living in Rochdale and not many of us get to be 92.

Well done Ted
I hope the Blades recognize the need for you to be mentioned or listed ion the hall of fame.

RIP

If you get a chance, would you share some of your Blades material with us? Either on a new thread or one of the existing threads on such things. And I'll forgive you for not immediately falling in love with Hodgy! There are not many United keepers I've trusted since Hodgy, as he was the one I grew up watching.

I remember being shocked when Mercer signed Barrass and dropped Joe Shaw but was prepared to give them both the benefit of the doubt , since both manager and player had been well respected England centre halves .

My faith in them both was soon dispelled when I watched his home debut in which he was quite frankly , fucking crap . Ponderous , overweight and completely lacking any of Joe's skills of distribution and positional sense he was a complete liability and continued to be so until common sense finally prevailed and the great man was restored to his rightful position .

The fact that Mercer also fell out with Sir Jimmy and , when Burgin asked for a transfer replied " Who's going to sign you ? " puts him high on my list of Shit Managers at the Lane ( although he does have a lot of competition in that respect )

Yes DSB happy memories but you probably have clearer memories than me. I also first went to BDTBL 1947-48 but only reserve matches aged 5, then 1st team prob.1950-51 but only occasionally. Bloody cannot determine my first 1st team game, would love to know and now there's no one around to ask, probably a Bank Holiday game. Regards my Avatar, no I'm no publicity seeker, but he is a close blood relative. Sadly he past away 2017 aged 87 and again never sort notoriety so I thought I would give him a little on here. His big childhood hero was 'Jock' Dodds and he met him as a kid through his teacher who was mates with Dodds. Apparently mid lesson in walked Dodds, prearranged of course, and spent the rest of the lesson talking to them. Once a Blade...…! Liked the story about the chewing gum, presume crowd were supplying it, small things like that just show how crowds thought of players of old.

Missed this one but couldn't resist. Just look at state of knees, this is only pre match kick in and can tell clothing still on ration, bet kit had Utility labels. No chewing yet (Wrigley's Beech Nut?) Cap, gloves folded inside plus something else no idea what .Any one?Ted Burgin at Lane (2).jpg

Unless I missed it (I took my seat on the Kop for the Bristol City game at about 2.50), there was no announcement about the minute's applause scheduled for the second half. When I saw Ted Burgin's photo on the big screen, I took that as the start of the minute.
