So who's telling lies?

"It is the oldest ground in the Football League, hosting football since 1861,[4] although some reports date it back as far as 1850"

I think we are telling lies.

Mansfield Town’s Field Mill is the oldest professional football ground in the world (isn’t it?).

We claimed this title when Mansfield slipped out of the professional league and now they’re back we’ve just pretended we haven’t noticed!

Yes, according to the source as cited in the wiki quote:
Mansfield Town's Field Mill Ground, now known as the One-Call Stadium, is the second oldest football ground in the world. Field Mill has been used as a football ground since 1861 (and as a cricket ground for a few years before that). The Sandygate Road ground in Sheffield, which was first used in 1860, is the oldest football ground in the world. It is currently used by Hallam FC. Bramall Lane, the current home of Sheffield United, was first used as a football ground in 1862 (though like Field Mill was used as a cricket ground for a few years before that). Field Mill is therefore the oldest football ground in the world that hosts professional football. It is also the oldest football ground in the Football League.

Don't United claim Bramall Lane is the oldest professional sports ground in the world. This brings in the Cricket and means both SUFC and MTFC can be telling the truth.

He’s probably just used to saying it over the years, since Mansfield wasn’t in the football league until a few years ago

I get why some people care, for bragging rights

But just to even think that these grounds have been in place for so long, is quite amazing and astonishing to reflect upon

I moved to Australia in 2008 (back in Glossop now) and remember the town I lived in celebrating it’s 10th anniversary. (Joondalup, if you care)

I’m of that middle-aged age where history suddenly becomes really interesting. I’ve turned into the same human my coffee breath boring cunt history teacher was.

Isn't it Bramall Lane is the oldest professional football ground in the world, and Field Mill is the oldest football ground in the world which hosts professional football but hasn't always?
You are correctly pointing to what’s known as “a break in service”. So to be precise we should refer to our ground as “the oldest continuous professional football ground in the world”. But it’s not quite so “pithy” is it!

Mansfield were relegated to the conference but were still a professional club.

Still need to keep looking for that loophole!

Genuine question: Is the Conference classed as being a professional league? I thought it was only Prem/Champ/1/2?

Question is against Bristol will Sinclair say BDTBL the 2nd oldest professional statdium in the world?

I can’t find any stats but there are loads of professional clubs in the national league, has been for years.

I thought it meant the staff were all full time and paid a regular wage? I may be wrong?

There have been several threads on this and the outcome is generally that we can't make any claim without attaching so many caveats it sounds a bit daft. It's just a very old ground. And it's ours.
