I was also surprised we continued for so long playing a left back at right wing second half.

Blackwell said it's because he's shown weaknesses at left back and is far more comfortable going forward, mentioned he's good at the back post.

I don't think it was neccessarily that he was out of position second half, more that he was knackered.

That's fair enough, but as a full back, his main role should be defending. I think he's a little naive at times when bombing forward because he leaves massive gaps behind him... which is fair enough in a team which communicates as the man on the wing can drop back. But this is a bit beyond United at the moment and against a team like Newcastle, it could've been more dangerous.

I agree he needs to know when to stay and when to go but, with so few highlights this season, i'm happy to see him flying up and down the wing.

He is young and he will learn, unfortunately it will probably be after he has played is last game for us.

....before all you so called 'realists' start to bitch, moan and whinge about the same old drivel. Not one of you can criticise that team tonight. We were beaten by a goal we could do sod all about.

Ecouraged by tonght, with Monty and Ward playing in that game, i reckon it would have been a different result, and we passed it on the floor and looked good in stages.

No doubt all you 'realists' will berate this post or totally ignore it, as all you are content with is arguing with the posters that bite and reading your own inane posts.

I know which side of the fence I stand on....UT'F'B!!!

Absolute bollox! I'm sick to the high teeth with people coming on all pussy, making excuses and saying 'oh if only this' and 'Oh we played well but we were unlucky that..' Absolute CRAP! The 93rd minute before we forced a save out of Harper..??? Well mate, if that's your idea of success then good luck to you, I hope you enjoy the mediocrity, but don't bother to count me in again unless McCabe grows a pair and we have wholesale changes. Wake up and smell the fucking coffee for christs sake!

Yes, i'm afraid that all players make mistakes and those prepared to run with the ball and take players on will inevitably make a poor choice now and again.

Ryan France would, no doubt, get rid of the ball whenever it came to him if he would have started the game. Would you have preferred that?

Do not forget that the foul which led to the dispossession of Walker and the massive deflection off Morgan were major factors of equal importance to the goal; so to say that Kyle gave the goal away is ridiculous in my eyes.

Where did the goal come from then? Who lost possession of the ball for us?

And to make it clear I do think Walker should continue with his runs forward and thought he had a great game. But cutting inside like that with all those players around him will result in a massive bollocking if he is playing for Utd, Spurs, Barcelona or whoever.

I think it's more His Opinion, you may not agree with it but it certainly isn't any of the things you say it is.

Absolute bollox! Ranty sweary blah blah...

Can we take a chill pill please?

We're having a fairly constructive discussion about tonight's game and it doesn't need to be spoilt by angry people with their knickers in a twist.

Breathe. Have a drink. Calm it down.

Much obliged/

The goal came as result of a foul on Walker which lead to Taylor taking a shot which massively deflected off Morgan (who turned his back).

I think the goal was a result of an unfortunate passage of events and nobody is directly to blame.

Perhaps he should have booted the ball forward or put in into touch but he didn't and i don't have a problem with that.

If you think the goal was Walkers fault then that is your right.

I obviously disagree.

Good effort tonight but shocking quality infront of goal.

Also play to the whistle lads even if one of your guys is crippled.

I know what you are saying jod but there has to be a cause and every club will coach that out of him, rightly so, don't cut in like that with four men around you. Has to play percentages sometimes to be a top class player.

Also in normal speed it didn't look a foul - and 9 times out of 10 he wouldn't get a foul.

At 19 or whatever those are the bits he needs to learn to become top class and play in the Prem.

Sorry Linz, no excuse I know but I'm more angry tonight than I have been for a long, long time and happy clappers aren't at the top of my xmas card list at this moment in time. I'm going now.

I definately agree; luckily that side of the game can be taught and i am looking forward to seeing how far he can go.

not wanting to pick on the lad but I can't help this bit.......

Evans had his best game in ages.

yep, I agree.

but he never looked like scoring

but sadly that really says it all. He didn't force one save from the keeper.

Not bad overall tonight. Unlucky is what you get at the minute. But as soon as we concede, you can't see our way back. And that's with £5M of investment by the manager.

I don't think it was neccessarily that he was out of position second half, more that he was knackered.

In my opinion he did allright in the first half when he played on the left, bar one occasion when he slipped up and they nearly got through. Newcastle created very little down that side. We also used him a couple of times as a target man because he was marked by the small Simpson.

However it became obvious 2nd half that Treacy needed to change position to become more effective, and I think it would have been a proactive move to sub Steawart early when Newcastle started to get on top. After they scored it ccertainly made little sense to me to have him playing right wing.

Aye Alco - The bloke next to me said after Evans had outmuscles Collucini "He did very well there... but how many has he put on target?".

My opinion. Didn't deserve to win, but created enough to score. Defensively, were lucky at times, but Newcastle got lucky and got an extremely lucky deflected goal.

Real time I thought Kyle was tackled fairly, the ref only gets real time. So no foul. Kyle should have done better, but first half he took on several players and won due to his persistence. He needs to learn when to take risks. He's young. BUT lets not coach the risk out of him, Naughton got more cautious last season.

Defence and Midfield, did their jobs. Newcastle were ok but not sparkling, they put 4- 6 men behind the ball at every chance and showed us respect.

We played football first half and should have continued, but Newcastle came at us more just before they scored and we panicked. Where were our leaders in Midfield. Harper? Quinn?

We played it on the deck and tried to get the ball behind their back four well, until we got tired, then we got lazy and lumped it. WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had no luck up front but the chances that we had should have been taken. We needed a goal, but missed a lot of chances.

Stewart? Awful and should have been replaced with little or Camara earlier. Perhaps we should have played 3 strikers and seen how Newcastle coped when we had a striker that could head on the right.

Improvement? Not sure it was, Newcastle were poor, but we didn't take the chance.

Morgs and probably Walker now out next week so yet more disruption in the back 4. We need fit players quick.

Anyone who thought Walker had a bad game clearly knows nothing about football. He was immense tonight. He was clearly told to push up and overlap whenever possible as he had a more defensive/less attacking right midfielder infront of him (see Naughton when he had Halford there last season). It was obviously a managerial decision and he played out of his skin tonight, MOTM for me.

Complaining because he was playing as an attacking full back (which seems to be his prefered roll) rather than just playing as a static right sided defender is ludicrous in the extreme.

have everyone left there united blinkers on?
We are doing worse then when robson was here.
Did we get a point?
Have we only won 4 in 14?
Blackwell is playing wrong player and tatics!
Be realist

Other than giving away for the only goal I suppose he did ok.

That isn't my complaint.

My complaint is that in a couple of dangerous situations, he thought it was a calculated risk to take on 4 men from a defensive position, knowing that if he didn't beat every one of them, we'd be in the shit big time.

If it works, great! He looks class and we've took 4 players out of the game. If it doesn't work, they get a very, very good chance.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming just him for the goal and i'm not saying he should spend all the match playing defensively.... Just that he needs to work on his positioning and decision making to fulfill his potential.

In real time, I'd have said fair tackle... I will accede to the others who have seen it in slow motion but that's definitely not the worst decision given by the referee tonight. No excuse not to play to the whistle either, free kick or not.

It's just a little soul destroying and it's difficult to see where the goals are coming from.

Second thing you should be taught when learning to kick a football is to keep over it to keep your shot down (after learning not to toe-end it, of course). It's frustratingly simple stuff that we're cocking up every time. Stupid tippy tappy free kicks when we're just outside the box. Lax control meaning the ball is lost in dangerous areas. We looked to be chasing piss-coloured shadows at times because we were slow to react.

Treacy had a good game but the rest of the midfield was much of a red and white muchness. Walker tries to do to much when his priority should be to defend. Killa doesn't want to play for us, nor does he want to play for Newcastle if that's his best performance. Evans might as well not be on the pitch and Henderson's control let him down badly.

It isn't shockingly awful stuff... which in some ways makes it worse. It is simple stuff that all professional footballers should be able to do yet some of those lads in red and white seem incapable of doing.

Frustrated... but not too surprised by tonight. The spirit was there in patches if nothing else.

I first thought that I was with you all the way on this one but then I read on.

Foul or no foul Kyle made an error just as he did for the last Cardiff goal. I have no doubt he has great potential but he has a number of frailties. I think somewhere else someones having a go at Stewart not sure why I do not remember him missing anything that went to him on or over 6 foot. As for free kicks it's simple the Laws offer two types direct and indirect we have for God knows how long turned EVERY friggin direct into an indirect. As for the shooting we practice that shite in the pops-in embarassment prior to kick-off. Hendo might be a big lummax but IMO he does more than his fair share; Evans - how long do we have to wait for his "magic"; Killa - whilst we've got him we should play him. I said in another post I wrongly rubbished Davies early doors and said then that I would like to see both him and Killa in the team and today they did nothing too wrong as I recall.

IMO our performances have gradually improved - I thought today we were better than we were against Cardiff. So why didn't we win? To answer my own question it's because when we need to change our game plan we don't and why don't we because we can't and why can't we because Mr Blackwell doesn't know how to. I'm not going to rattle on about Blackwell out. Results are king and as sure as night follows day they will be his judge and jury.

But, whilst its good to have confidence in yourself, he needs to learn where on the pitch to try taking on 4/5 opposition players. Risked it big time a few times today.

The snap decision Walker made to dribble could well be the turning point in United's season and hasten the end of Blackwell's reign. If he'd just booted it out, we'd have most likely taken a point tonight and he wouldn't have got himself injured. :(

Why did they put a seal next to me tonight
All he did all night was clap, clap and clap again
Is it subtofuge or a plot to make me think that
Blackwell is popular

Tell that to Glen Johnson or Roberto Carlos.

I thought that Walker was the best player on the pitch for us by a country mile tonight. I think that a full back is afforded a little freedom to express himself; that is the beauty of playing wide rather then in the middle.

Too many of our players are content to do the bare minimum expected by a player in their position and so i'm happy to see Kyle take on a little more responsibility.

But Walker isn't playing for Liverpool or Real Madrid is he? And besides Liverpool and Real Madrid's defending is terrible at times, but they get away with it because of Raul, Torres etc....We've got Evans.

Had it been Cotterill that had been tackled (either fairly or unfairly) 15 yards from the edge of our box, trying to take on four players and it led to a goal Blackwell would have gone mental, he'd have slagged him off on the radio and dropped him from first team affairs for weeks on end. But because its Walker and he's only young, from our academy and a blade he gets different treatment, despite the fact he "took the money" 4 months ago!

This club is sleepwalking towards relegation.

It wasn't a bad performance - we would have drawn if Darius Henderson was any good - but it appears to be just about the best we can do. That is a bad sign.

As for the manager, I have no time for anyone who plays a left back on the right wing and leaves 3 wingers on the bench.

(particularly when one of those wingers puts in more good crosses than anyone else managed in the entire game when he was eventually introduced. I assume his reward will be to be left on the bench again as Ryan France gets a go on the right flank at Barnsley).

From a (nearly) neutral perspective I reckon United can hold their heads high tonight tbh! For a start the goal was obviously incredibly lucky but IMO it should never have been, I think it was Walker who was clearly fouled just before and how the ref played on I'll never know, what a load of sh*t.

I thought blades would've got an equaliser late on too, they seemed to up their game as soon as the board went up to say five minutes! Harpers save at the end was quality, on another day that would've been in and it would've ended 1-1!

A very even game today and although Newcastle played the better football, whilst United knocked it long quite a bit; I think a draw would've been a fair result.

Stag & Blade, Stoney.
