The post-Villa recovery

For everyone who worried that conceding three goals in 10 minutes to draw with Villa would ruin our season, a quick, reassuring reminder of what's happened since:

Played: 5
Won: 4
Drawn: 1
Lost: 0

Goals scored: 8
Goals conceded: ZERO

That's how Chris Wilder deals with things like that.





(Yes I know anyone could Google that information but I have some smug Villa supporting mates who are transfixed on the Playoffs, so I wanted to see these figures up in lights).

I posted in here afterwards that I reckon that game would galvanize us. Obviously, looking back, I'd sooner we won the game. Those two points lost are a pain when you look at the table now. But I do genuinely believe it's helped our form since for a number of reasons.

it's just what CW seem's to do and what makes him a great manager ,
He is always learning and we as a team have developed well beyond anyone could of possibly imagined after less than 3 years

The way he and AK are, IF we do get up i have no doubt that they will make us stronger and adapt to the step up- sure it might a good few games / we may well get well, well beaten some weeks but we will always develop and continue to push on !

I remember listening to Wilder's interview after the game and he said he was extremely pleased with the performance over the 90 minutes and I thought, I bet that's not what he said to the players in the dressing room straight after the game!

The RS interviewer brought it up last week, asking about the "effect of the Villa game" and Wilder quickly brought him down a peg or two.

You gotta love Chris.

Rumours of our demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Nah, that's this summer when we don't get promotion and it's the Villa game that cost us

We could still very easily miss out by 2 points or less. We would as things stand.

But would we have had more points now if we won at Villa? Probably not.

4 points from Villa and West Brom was always likely to be the maximum and we couldn't really ask for any more.

If we're to look back at any game with regret it looks like being Leeds at home.

Agree on all points. You could almost sense from the players in subsequent games that they were not going to let that happen again, ever. Whilst it was frustrating to drop the 2 points there is no guarantee that had we beat Villa we would have then gone on to beat Boro and West Brom too. Sure we would have been confident after putting 3 past them at Villa park and claiming 3 points but sometimes in life you need a kick up the arse even when things are going well. Plus on any other day Montero scores with that last second chance at the Hawthornes - I still can't quite believe how Dean stopped, and then managed to hold onto that ball.

Including the Villa match it is now 14 points from 6 games. However those points come about, every single team in the league [if not the country] would settle for that at this stage of the season. Then of course you have our points haul from the start of 2019 to before the Villa match, 10 points from 5 games. I honestly cannot remember a United team performing better post Christmas.

Was the RS Interviewer that knobhead Mike ? He does ask some stupid questions which I think gets Wilders back up at times ?

Over the course of a season there will be a double digit number of games you can look back at and say "what if", but do you know what?

So can every other team that just misses out, it's the nature of the beast and after 46 games most teams will be exactly where they deserve to be.
