After yesterday's incidents at Birmingham and Arsenal with pitch invaders going on and attacking players (yeah i know, first time you've heard of this)

I think stewards and how they operate seriously need to be looked at.

I know they get paid really little so they don't have a care in the world, but if so - then literally what is the point in paying them? I'm assuming due to health and safety regulations they are needed but they're basically only there to point people to their seats.

None of them know first aid, so it won't be anything to do with if anyone needs medical attention at a match, none of them are remotely bothered about being there (hoods up, watching the match or just staring into thin air)

I think it was at the game against Reading, a person ran on the pitch, walked past about 30 stewards who were all sat down, didn't even get off their seats. It boiled my piss. Do your fucking jobs.

There was only 1 who actually chased him, he was probably a steward supervisor... but literally what is the fucking point in having stewards if they are not doing their job of doing more than just pointing people to their seats.

They have stewards sat down at the bottom of the stairs, watching the match. Are they not supposed to be making sure that people are not about to run onto the pitch? You don't get paid to watch the football. We all pay to watch the football, you don't get to watch it for fucking free and do fuck all when it's actually time to do your job AND get paid for it too.

Don't care how little they get paid, if they want an increase they should start a fucking union and go on a march outside downing street. As they're not doing that, they're clearly alright with how much they get paid and should do their jobs.

The more switched on and physically capable should be put around the perimeter of the pitch, for a start.

Wait its the police job to stop these attacks! They are paid to be at every game and they are the ones actually trained to handle thugs.
Clubs have to pay for each copper inside he ground which is why they employ stewards, they’re cheaper.
The stewards in the John St. stand just stand on the stairs getting in everyone’s way, they wear day glow yellow jackets so are allowed to do this, but if any paying fan tries this they’re a trip hazard!!
I’m fed up with bollocking them about it whilst I try to get passed them on my way for my half time piss.

There's no way you can stop people running onto the pitch other than re-installing barriers again and we all know how that ended. The FA, EFL and the PL have to accept that this will happen from time to time, whether good-natured or otherwise, unless we have stewards and/or police alongside sections of fans which they do sometimes for away fans, but not often home ends.

Fining the clubs will happen as a result but if Brum gets docked points then I think that's very harsh; how are they supposed to know that this guy was going to do what he did?!

The issue is that the majority of stewards aren’t licensed to just “go and grab people”, they’re there purely for customer service and H&S in the event of an emergency/evacuation. Licensed stewards are the ones that carry out bag searches or are usually deployed in small teams to respond to trouble. These, however, cost the club considerably more to employ.

I know a guy that was a steward at Elland Road whilst we were at Uni in Leeds. he was a Man Utd fan and all o_O.

It was just a job every other week for very little money, and he freely admitted that he wouldn't risk getting hurt or going above and beyond for a couple of quid an hour.

Said he enjoyed a bit of banter with the fans, showed people where to sit, but if it kicked off he'd be clueless with what to do.

If they really want to sort it out they need professional security, however pricing that up may cause a few headaches...

Stewards have to be licenced if they are putting their hands on people, like the SIA badged door staff at clubs & pubs. Stewards without the badge risk being done for assault if handling people. They're just there for show really. See the ones that form a barrier outside the Lane end exit gates so away fans get straight to the coaches in the side street. They wouldn't be able to do anything if it kicked off so they have a few police with them.

You'll see at most prem clubs the stewards are licenced security staff and will grab fans when needed. That's why you'll see less segregation between fans in the ground. These security guys are usually the real deal, trained up and can handle themselves.

They turned you down didn't they?

The ones in the South are always happy to have a chat to old Maurice and Ada about their bunions while a queue builds up behind them.

And if a fine becomes the standard punishment for this how long before we get someone pretending to be the fan of an opposing team doing something similar in an attempt to get some points docked for said team.

Exactly
How many Police were on duty yesterday at Birmingham ? I bet 95% of them were still outside the ground sleeping in vans or eating Maccy D's during the game.
To be fair i thought the steward was pretty quick of the mark to get the Birmingham pillock, not sure his colleagues were though, and as for the Police as per usual nowhere to be seen.

There's no way I'd be able to find my seat at away games without the stewards explaining the complex letter and number seating system to me.

It still makes me smile that the signs in the South Stand say “seats facing pitch”, although there’s been many a time when I wished they weren’t :-)

You'd have to be pretty mad to try that though! The Police would look into the profile of the fan responsible, see that they'd never attended a match before at the club they were trying to get points off and then see the history of them supporting another rival!

If we want better rewards with greater responsibilities, they need to be paid more and trained better. In the light of current events, one of their duties would be to protect footballers at their place of work. Agents currently make ridiculous volumes of money representing players; why not put a levy on their earnings to provide stewards at all grounds? One of the problems is that too high a proportion of income goes on players and agents; there needs to be a re-balancing of spending towards improving the infrastructure of the game.

One of my reoccurring Sheffield United anxiety dreams has the South Stand facing the car park; incredibly, it's still always full.

And getting a prison sentence and 10-year banning order for their trouble? Can’t see it to be honest

You can't legislate against random daft and stupid acts. As was said earlier, the only way to stop this is fencing, and we're not going down that road. Reading and watching various bits of punditry yesterday and today, people have struggled to identify even a handful of similar incidents this century. Bits of what's happening in the world are grim, and idiots like the bloke at St Andrews may reflect this, but I don't agree with major punishment for Blues simply because some random twat decides he's going to take direct action against Mr Grealish. How would we feel if they locked up BDTBL and docked us 10 points because of the actions of one attention seeking tosser in a crowd of 27000? Better stewarding may be an answer, and both fans and players have a right to feel protected, but it's not exactly a commonplace event requiring draconian punishment (except towards the individual offender), or the "hang the club out to dry" attitude of Shearer!

Just seen the Birmingham lad got 14 weeks in HMP this afternoon. 350 quid fine & costs which includes 100 to Grealish - for "pain, discomfort & shock".

Also a 10 yr ban from all grounds and a life ban from Birmingham. His family have left the area in fear of reprisals.

He "cannot explain what came over him yesterday morning", his solicitor said.

"His initial foolish intention was to just go on to the pitch and whip up the crowd," said Vaughn Whistance, defending.

Probably lost his job too and will find it extremely difficult to get another.

I think in yesterday’s case he’d been a Brum season ticket holder for twenty years so unless he’s a top sleeper cell member it’s probably fair to say he’s one of theirs.
I do take your point though. I guess it has to be dependent on being able to show he is a fan of the relevant club.

Something has to be done though otherwise we’re behind bloody fences again and no one wants that.

Good points - I used to go to test matches and at Old TRafford they hired bouncers who were from Salford Rugby club and anyone who tried to get on the pitch was wrestled to the floor before they got more than a yard !

I think there needs to be consequences for this (and other) actions. But, I would simply start small. A fan on the pitch. Missile lobbed on (as per Hillsborough). The Ref takes the players off for 15 minutes calming down. Warnings are banged on the big screen. PA announcements. At least then, you're in a warnings process towards forfeiting the game, points deductions, ground closure. The innocent crowd are impacted by the 15 minute delay, but that's kind of the point. There will be consequences.

I do think the ref should take teams off whenever anything like this happens.

In an insane industry like football, there will be insanity. Here's how it will play out. (example) Bluenose punches Grealish from behind, Grealish shoulder is broken in the incident, Villa can't pick Grealish for 6 matches, but still pay his wages, Villa sue the fan for Grealish's wages & as they miss out on promotion also sue him for the money they would have made in the Premier League. That's millions, which he hasn't got. But, him & his family basically lose everything. Punishment under the law - 14 weeks in the big house - is one thing, but pursuing for compensation is a whole new ball game. And......
If Villa don't feel they can get financial satisfaction by suing the fan, they just sue Brum on the basis their negligence caused the problem.
The insane wages & insane money in the Premier League make this scenario inevitable one day. Lose out because of a criminal act by someone - sue.
