Hate this change when it happens.

He’s just simply not a midfielder anymore and doesn’t have the technical ability to play there in this division. Why we made that change yesterday I simply don’t know - very negative to take Dowell off for Cranie.

Cranie for Basham and Duffy for Dowell and we might’ve got 3 points.

Can’t help but be disappointed. To not score 3 times on the bounce against that shower and make Michael Hector look like fucking Paolo Maldini is awful.

To be afraid of losing is not us at all, and it’s seemed that way in the last 3.

I don't think the last two home games is playing to not lose... Both times we came up against a flat back XI. Doesn't matter how good a player or team you have, it's not easy to break down. See Man C vs Bournemouth at the weekend for evidence of it happening to the very best.

We’ve had a few sides come to the lane and park the bus in the last couple of seasons and found a way past them, better than Wednesday.

We’ve simply sunk to their level if you ask me. Yesterday was the biggest case in point.

As is usual with discussions about Basham - he is the ONLY player we have to alter the game whilst it is in motion.

We have done it numerous times in the past and it can be very effective to change the shape of a game.

For certain he isn't now and never has been a midfielder in a 4, or a centre back in a 4, but he suits how we play and is vital to seamless changes.

CW/AK tried changes last night that didn't come off - but most of the problem was how W'day set up from kick off.

It was a victory for anti-football.

Cranie for Basham and Duffy for Dowell would’ve been miles more effective than what we tried. We almost put Basham upfront.

Totally agree. I was debating with LondonBlade89 yesterday on Wilder picking his teams without the opposition in mind. However I believe yesterday totally pissed on my chips and Wilder 100% played the opposition and occasion yesterday rather than just thinking about us.

Any changes that CW makes is partly done to make the opposition think and change.

Changes can quite often have an effect. As an an example we were under the cosh 2nd half v Blackburn away for 15/20 minutes of the 2nd half - we switched to 433, Blackburn didn't see it and we're suddenly 1 nil up. Changes can have an effect CW/AK have done it on a regular basis - some work some don't but it's better than plodding with the same plan.

Agree about Duffy - I wanted him on from the start with McG to play through them. We went with a safe away game that didn't quite work out. We still had 59% of possession on the PIGS ground - it should really have been enough.

As for Dowell - he has become a starting fixture for away games recently - so he was an expected starter.

We've just got to suck it up and move on.

Definitely mate. Duffy not getting on the pitch in 90 showed that we were happy with a point and against 14th in the league and that’s what was disappointing for me.

If there was a critique on Wilder, it's his choice of subs when he isnt making a like for like change.

The Basham into middle dropped us deeper against Villa and even though it was individual errors that were costly in that game, we were under pressure to make them errors.

Last night it seemed unnecessary to move Bash into the middle. We wasn't getting overrun.

If we were 1 nil up against Leeds and needed to see game out for 20 mins I'd understand that. But I didn't understand it last night or against Villa.

Did alright there at Hillsborough last season!

Wilder is very scared of losing against Wednesday and it clouds his decisions.

Even in the 4-2 we lined up with Basham in midfield.

We went more attacking though in the 4-2 game as they pressed for an equaliser at 2-1, so not sure how that fits within the Scared Wilder point. In fact the change to go more attacking immediately resulted in the equaliser. Surely if he had been very scared he’d have tried to shut up shop at 2-1?

I thought we looked more dangerous when we made this switch, although that was probably due to the change in shape more than the specific personnel.

People are attributing our shortcomings last night to Wilder's tactics. That's a maybe, for me. Wednesday did a decent job of shutting down our usual attacking avenues--Norwood in the middle and the overloads down the wings. We needed to show some balls to try and play through their press, and instead we went long time and time again. Is that Wilder's doing, or decisions made on the pitch? Probably a bit of both. I do agree that Duffy and Didsy might've given us more options to keep the ball on the deck.

I can't agree with the idea that Wilder is scared of losing to Wednesday. I think we clearly tried to win both games at BL and just couldn't find a way through--far from the only time that's happened since we got back to the Championship. Last night it did seem like we were playing for a draw, or at least keep it tight till near the end. I'm fine with the point but disappointed with the performance, because I thought Wednesday were poor and definitely there to be beaten.

Indeed he did and it was the first time that season we did that. CCV came into the RCB position from memory.

How different the possession stats were though.

last season: SW 63% SU 37%

this season: SW 41% SU 59%

Shows how quickly fortunes change.

We were underdogs under less pressure. Wilder was generally more positive with his subs back then but has since toned it down quite a lot. In the last two 0-0s at Bramall Lane we obviously went for the win but certainly did not take many risks in the later stages.

Basham into midfield usually is used during the game to switch us into a four without the need for a sub. Bash played very well last year marking Bannen out of the game. We still needed Duffy to come on and give us two number 10's playing off Clarke that caused them numerous problems.

Last night Craine for Dowell pushing Bash into midfield was a bewildering substitution. We dropped into the dreaded flat midfield 3. Pigs hadn't laid a glove on us until then but for the next 6 minutes they had their best period of the game and nearly scored. CW then realised it wasn't happening and brought McGoldrick on and we went back to dominating the ball.

CW said bringing Crainie on and pushing Bash into midfield was designed to give Norwood more time on the ball and push Fleck further forward. That never happened and Fleck was the deepest of the midfield three when he left the ball and nearly gifted a goal to Hutchinson. Only when McGoldrick came on did we seem to get back on our game.

JOC did signal to the bench late on and that may be the reason why we didn't go with a third sub. Duffy should have come on for Dowell everyone around me said that. Crainie for a tiring Freeman. For me wrong substitution until we brought on McGoldrick as it gave them a little momentum that they hadn't had all match.

It was the right sub yesterday if we wanted a point.

I think Cranie should slot in for Freeman if Baldock isn’t fit. The changes I was hoping would be made last night were Cranie for Freeman, Duffy for Dowell and McGoldrick for Madine. If we’d made those three changes around 55-65 I think the game would have turned. We might not have found a way through but we’d have dominated the final 1/4.

I can think of several games this season where Basham has been moved into midfield, during game, and we won: How come you never complained about Basham in midfield then?

I agree that having 11 behind the ball shouldn't prevent us from scoring, as you pointed out, we've managed to pick teams off at the lane who only came to defend.

Dont understand the comment about sinking to their level though. I'd agree that we didn't play well Monday, and that it was an even match, but that's just one game in isolation. Are you implying that us and Wednesday are now on the same level? (As both our form and the league table would say different.)

If Akinbiyi is talking about that one match, I totally agree. We played long ball because they flooded the midfield. Instead of trying to play our normal game we used plan b from kick off. We are not long ball exponents and, as yet, we don’t play it that well because we are slow to the knock down imo.

I’ll give you 2 - Wednesday and Villa.

Please re-read my reply; I said games where we'd won: it seems you only complain about Basham playing in midfield when we don't win, but when we've won you make no mention of it...

Just because I don’t lob it all over the board doesn’t mean I haven’t complained about it.
